    There’s an old saying that “Everyone lives downstream.” Think on that for a while.

    This is disturbing. Are Americans really so hung up about something as simple as peeing in the bush?

    And the need for euphemisms. It seems Wiley has (not unusually) touched a nerve here.

    Danae is not a camper. But going potty where ever she wants I think has intrigued her. And just think, no hand sanitizers.Like King Julian said in Madagascar. “WHO WIPES??”

    Western civilization is divided into three eras:

    CE = Common Era

    BCE = Before the Common Era

    BCP = Before Cell Phones

    While large packs of people in popular trail areas have long been a serious “sanitation issue” in parks and “Nature”. The real issue today is getting away from not just cell service, much protest from people wanting more towers in wilderness areas so the don’t lose “service”, but also the noise and impacts of “civilization”, like airplane noise and contrails everywhere.

    After 32 years as a Ranger and the Wilderness Specialist, the solace of solitude IS very difficult to find today, and the pressure from our culture to eliminate solitude IS a little (no a lot) scary.

    Secret to sanity: go find a rock to sit on, or a tree to sit under, where you can NOT find a sign of “civilization”, and your civility will increase as well.

    Glad to see that somebody besides me still knows about catholes.

    They used to tell us that ‘running water purifies itself every 500 feet’. They’ve stopped saying that; is it because they don’t want anyone drinking natural water, or because the toxic waste that now pollutes our streams can’t be cleansed in 500 feet, or a thousand feet, or even at all?

    I do wish there was some way to get through to the industrialists that you can lie to the politicians, you can lie to the public – but you can’t lie to Mother Nature.

    We used to know that, too.

    An interesting storyline. I read an article yesterday about an executive that had a wake-up call. So he started walking and then hiking. Then he started using his hikes for meetings with colleagues and associates. Not all were on board, some citing health reasons. The ones that did go along were eventually hooked and they recruited more for their own meetings. There are no electronic devices. Everyone walks and talks and concentration actually increases as does memory. I wish I had come across this idea 30 years ago. Now, recovering from back surgery, I have walking meetings with my granddaughters. We stroll rather than hike. We stop to pet cats and dogs in the neighborhood. We discuss various flora. In general we connect with one another and are healthier for it on several levels. I highly recommend a return to nature. Even if its a stroll through a big city park.JP

    It’s not the peeing in a bush that bothers me, but the other things I have to do (doo-doo). And the cleaning up needed. When my elderly mother attended school in rural Kentucky in the 1930’s, when they went to the potty, they grabbed leaves off the trees. Nowhere near my comfort zone.
