Shannon enjoys "Sleeping Beauty," I wanna enjoy my beauty" Firefighter: "BRAD?" Firefighter: "Hey, Brad! We're here! You said you need help?" Brad: "NO! NO HELP!" Shannon: "What's going on?!"

Hey, Levi!!! You were right!!! ;)

So, Shannon did indeed “MacGyver” them out of the closet… – And it looks like the firefighters came just in time…. – Sounds like the answer to a riddle… What’s neither green, nor gold, but red all over?… Lots of possible answers… The credit card.. The look on everybody’s faces, there…. – And it would seem that Aunt Toni will have to try to explain how “You take the good, you take the bad.. You take ’em both, and there you have….”
ORMouseworks over 10 years ago
And now Brad will be the laughing-stock of the station…just as some predicted. I thought Brad and Toni would get out of the closet with just a firefighter “friend” like Brad said, but this is far funnier! ;)

Looks like the guys at the fire station will be having themselves a good laugh tomorrow. It will take a while for these two to live it down among their fellow firefighters.

Okay so I was wrong about Shannon, and I am happy to be wrong. She gets in the way, but she is a real, good child, who clearly loves Bwad and her aunt, Toni, and has some terrific instincts and smarts. Great., lets see what else happens. BTW I hope they get married this year sometime.

Anyways, I think this strip proves they are sexually active…whenever Greg isn’t doing the diabolous ex machina type stuff. Clearly they would’ve done it had firefighters not intervened.
And…Toni, honestly, looks as frustrated as he does, really.

What these two need is to Get Married already! I hope Greg won’t drag this around; once people decide to get married, why wait (the party not withstanding) ?!!) I was engaged the middle of August and married at the end of November. If they could get their act together, it would be a done deal… ;)

Wow opening a door with a credit card… Where do they live 1950?
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
Thank Goodness!
I knew Shannon wasn’t gonna steal from Toni. But, like Toni, I wonder why her dad taught her that?
Anyway, all’s well that ends well, if maybe just a little embarrassing for Brad/Toni. Plan better guys! Plan better!

Dad teaches Shannon SO much useful knowledge. Wait, I don’t remember Shannon ever mentioning anything else he taught her. Hmmm, “I can only wonder WHY” – indeed!

LP2004 over 10 years ago
I have reluctantly come around to the generally accepted view that Toni’s brother is an unfit parent. Not, however, because he leaves his daughter with others while he seeks employment opportunities – that’s what single parents do, all the time – but rather because time and again he endangers his daughter’s life by leaving her in the ‘care’ of these two blithering idiots.
Sisyphos over 10 years ago
Well, at least Shannon did good rather than the bad I (and others) had feared yesterday.Panel 2:“15 minutes later”? That, plus a few minutes for the rescue, means a response time of nearly 20 minutes for the PFD—nothing of which to be proud. But perfect comic timing.
Tandembuzz over 10 years ago
@Wesley and ReallyBad:
I thought of that back when Brad first broke the lock knob off.
Maybe Toni’s card was one of those credit cards with a metal-saw edge. If it took 15 minutes, maybe Shannon actually sawed through the deadbolt. (Of course, they could’ve had her do it with Toni’s Swiss Army knife…those often have a metal saw/file among their folding tricks.

Clearly two different groups. Clearly a bunch of assumptions… – And no joy, yet…..
Meh~tdology, fka Pepelaputr over 10 years ago
Why do some people continue to insist the lock was a deadbolt? It was obviously a dinky, cheap, interior door latch meant for a bedroom and easily shimmed, not a security deadbolt which would have had a keyed obverse. And who puts a shaet lock on a (hall?) closet? If you’re keeping valuables and weapons in there you use the previously described security lock, with a solid core door, and reinforced door frame, with no exterior pins._________Now comes the question; why has Shannon been taught to access locked bedrooms?
JayBluE over 10 years ago
Oh, if only you knew…..
Meh~tdology, fka Pepelaputr over 10 years ago
1) NOT a deadbolt.2) Brad is laying NEXT to Toni.3 (and most importantly) Luann-verse.No real-world consequences apply unless it’s part of a plot device, gag, or “moral” message.

How cool is that? Shannon now moves up a link in LuannVille’s food chain, possibly even tying Luann in the respect department!
locake over 10 years ago
Why would B and T get laughed at by the other firefighters? They were smart enough to get out of the closet, they don’t need to tell anyone how they did it. They are engaged in amorous activities which is normal for an young adult couple. I don’t see anything to laugh about.
I am concerned that it took the FD over 15 minutes to get there. Good thing there wasn’t a real emergency.
locake over 10 years ago
B and T know the fire department is coming, they called them. They can’t have both forgotten about the call.
rojroj over 10 years ago
15 minute response time? Expect the customary call for an investigation from some politico.
Reddyan over 10 years ago
I think Shannon got the credit card AND took Toni’s money. Her dad probably told her to do that and she wouldn’t question him. Brad and Toni will be much better examples for her later on.
Trails4GMZ over 10 years ago
WHY DID IT TAKE 15MINUSTES FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO ARRIVE?
Angelalex242 over 10 years ago
Ya know…
Maybe it took so long for the fire department to arrive because they were actually putting out a fire at the time they got the call, and they just dropped by when they were done. After all, Brad’s idiocy takes a decided 2nd string to their real job.
ACTIVIST1234 over 10 years ago
… said,
Brad did say he was calling a “friend”. That’s not 9-1-1. A 9-1-1 call should have been responded to much sooner! But calling a friend to say he (Brad) needed help with a problem would not result in a rush.*Unless, of course, the “friend” also has the hots for Ms. Daytona!*Looks to me the “friend” brought the whole crew in order to embarrass Brad or impress Shannon. (I doubt the latter.)

“It’d be nice if Evans would have shown how she unlocked the door, because the credit card trick doesn’t work with deadbolts. "
What makes you think it’s a deadbolt? Most closets don’t come with a lock, much less a deadbolt. The only doors with deadbolts are usually the ones that lead to the outside. Inside doors usually have those dinky easily pickable locks.
flowergirl19 over 10 years ago
“You can’t do that with a deadbolt lock, which is what this was drawn as.”
Would you please point out the part where it’s shown to be a deadbolt? I seem to have missed it.

From the looks of your almost unintelligible comment, I imagine you are one of those people you mentioned?
Elmer Gantry Fudd over 10 years ago
Yes, Toni, imply that Shannon’s father is a criminal, in front of her. Kids love that.

Are you this repugnant in real life too, or just anonymously online?
flowergirl19 over 10 years ago
It does seem to be so in panel 2. However, the next day shows Brad just snapping off the doorknob. So go figure, Evans just messed this one up.

I hope we can depend on Dad to teach Shannon to change a tire or pop a clutch to start the car.

He could probably teach her to hotwire a car to start it. But Shannon sure came to the rescue here!

TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
I also wonder, especially since her dad taught her an impossible skill. But that would require Brad and Toni caring about this kid. Instead of any follow-up question, they throw her in front of a TV so they can get back to each other.
I think that was more a setup in re: forgetting that he had called his FD buddies, and facilitating the embarrassment of their barging in on Brad & Toni. :-) :-)
Radical-Knight over 10 years ago
Face it, Brad… You’re confined to a celibate life!
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Let’s assume that if it was a deadbolt, the credit card trick would not have worked. The way the strip is drawn is just not an example of accurate technical illustration. As I want to see it, the door was fitted with some cheap doorknob mechanism.
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
There has been no suggestion whatsoever in this strip that Dirk and Toni meet for sex. There was the scene in the supermarket where Toni saw Dirk and his woman, which would refute the above.
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Yes, Brad’s situation would have been considered a low-priority call by the fire brigade.
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
I think they are trying with great effort to be sexually active, only to be frustrated by circumstances.
Asharah over 10 years ago
My coworker once locked her baby in the car. An 8 year old promptly opened the door with a coathanger. Her husband didn’t know what was scarier, a baby locked in the car, or a little kid that can break into a car in under 30 seconds.
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Possibly, Jonah might want to let Brad & Toni take care of Shannon, without legally adopting her— the best of both worlds.
JayBluE over 10 years ago
While many parents try to slip some Mozart into their kids’ ears, to seem ‘cool’, or ‘with it’ or ‘intellectually superior’ as parents, this kid’s parents felt he should learn something that other kids could relate to. Especially with all the money to be made sabotaging, then fixing lockers later on…..
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Wow! This lock issue demonstrates that Evans is a cartoonist of a newspaper comic, rather than a technical illustrator of a Science & Mechanics type of magazine…
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Let us now project out thoughts into the near future, when Brad & Toni are married. The question arises as to what will happen to TJ’s role in the strip— specifically, will he be written out? It is a fact in the “real world” that guys who are good friends usually drift apart when they get involved with women.
