Transcript:
Dad: "There's your limo. And here comes Quill"
Mom: "You look beautiful, Luann. So grown up. I'm very proud of the lovely person you've become"
Mom: "Have a wonderful time tonight"
Luann: "Thanks, mom"
This commemorates the way Greg…. "found"… Luann…. – His inspiration for “Luann” actually came from watching Karen (his daughter) playing “dress up” as a kid (about five years old at the time), in just the way Nancy is shown here, seeing Luann, having the same recollection of her as a little girl…. – From this, it sparked his imagination, and with a bit of “tweaking”, aged her to thirteen, one thing leads to another, and… “voila!”… Luann was launched ion March 17,1985….
“My Not-So-Little-Anymore Girl”“Milestones”“First They Dress-Up And Then They Grow Up”“Talkin’ Bout My Girl”“Sweet Child O’Mine”or“And I Think To Myself… What A Wonderful Girl…”
“I’d love to see the look on Quilly’s face if Luann came to the door looking like she does in panel 1.”^In the final panel, I guess Greg made sure to have Luann fill out… a “form”…before she left….
If this weeks strip is all about the senior prom its going to bring back memories I wish it didn’t. You see I never had a “senior prom”. Every girl I asked turned me down. Prom night I wound up having to work at my restraunt job and had to watch as people I knew came into the restraunt after the prom oficially ended and get told how much fun I missed. As a result everyyear around prom time the memory comes back and each time it comes back stronger. Especially since it marked the fact that I went through high school without date #1
“Books are not absolutely dead things, but do contain apotency of life in them to be as active as that soul waswhose progeny they are…” (John Milton, 1608-1674). And, on that note, off I go to snuggle down with a good book…’Nite all! ;)
If it were reversed, the effect would prove more…comic… – It seems that Greg wished to evoke a more “retrospective/sentimental, yet hopeful-for-the-future” perspective….
Perhaps, though, the same effect you are describing still is what is taking place.. we can’t be literally in Nancy’s head, but we can imagine that she is seeing both “images” as a kid, and as a maturing adult … both separately, and yet also simultaneously….
this strip’s as sweet as the Suburu commercial where the father sees his little girl as she once was and as she asks for the keys. He wants her as safe as possible
How sweet that Nancy re-lives her daughter’s early youth and then accepts her new maturity! This could be a great step forward for Luann, as Nancy has in effect given her her blessing.
So, I wonder if this new “makeup/hair” thing for her is the chance Greg/Karen have been looking for to upgrade Lu’s look from teenager to “young adult,” getting her, perhaps closer to Nancy’s look (hair a little shorter, etc.).
Something has always bothered me, though. Lu, since I’ve been reading (and as long as the strip has been in color), is drawn as a strawberry blonde or thereabouts. Yet both Frank and Nancy (and Brad) are all dark haired. So I wonder who’s using “the bottle???” “Nancy or Lu?” And is it “bleach” or “dye?”
Don’t forget genetic mutation, adoption, marital infidelity and alien infiltration.Even seeing grandparents would not show all recessive genes since they only express when matched with other recessive genes.
I have a 17 year old daughter and I never see her as a small child, especially not when she is dressed up for the prom. I see her as an adult, just the opposite of what is shown here.
That would be nice if Luann became more than what she is now, but that would happen only in real life. As long as this comic strip is up and as long as Greg Evans is sketching her, she’ll never be anything more than a one-dimensional, boy-crazy girl.
I would ask Greg if I knew how to contact him. It seems like Greg is wrapping up the story lines by having the high schoolers graduate and having Brad and Toni get married. I hope he isn’t planning to stop doing the strip and exit like Lynn Johnston did with “For Better or Worse.”Luann strips helped me break the ice on some sensitive issues with my stepdaughter over 1o years and I don’t want to miss the chance to say. Thank you, Greg, for a truly wonderful family friendly comic strip.
“Might not be too bad – I suggested it for Brad and Toni’s wedding about a year ago…”
I love the combination of green and purple. In fact I would have worn amethyst jewelry with the dress. Red jewelry would look good too, or black or brown or white or gold; anything but green. Too bad we can’t see her shoes. I recommend strappy silver or gold shoes.
Oh yeah, I would also do Luann’s eye makeup in a dark, smokey purple, combined with silver or gold (depending on the jewelry and shoes), along with the lipstick she’s wearing.
I’m not a parent so I don’t get how some folks only see their kids as little even when they go to prom, get married or have children of their own. BTW, while I’m not crazy about the color of her dress, Lu still looks lovely. Quill’s a lucky guy!
Yes! Greg Evans himself has stated that this comic strip is not coming to an end— however, Luann’s high school era is coming to an end. I welcome the change, as continuing to keep her as a senior high student would eventually get very stale & stagnant. I’m really looking forward to her “adventures” as a college freshman. Also, I am eagerly anticipating what Evans has indicated about the “trauma and drama” which will surround Brad & Toni’s wedding…
Hey! Lemme tell ya a darn funny story! In 1959, when I was 7, my half-sister was 17. She came to live with my (and her) mother. During senior year, she met a guy who soon asked her to “go steady” with him. What I am wondering about is what term today’s teenagers use for that stage of a “relationship.” To complete my story, she got married two weeks before high school graduation; later events proved that she was about two and a half months pregnant on the day of the cap & gown ceremony. My question is whether Quill & Luann are going steady at the present time. Having Luann be “with child” when she picks up her diploma would be quite a sensational idea, but is too edgy for the funny page to ever happen.
" Karen is being groomed to take over."^Karen has stated that she has not a lick of artistry in her blood… – If she takes over anything, it’d be the writing…
“Karen, who holds a degree in writing and literature, agreed to take an active hand in helping her father create the plots and character arcs in the story and he would carry on drawing the strip. On Sunday afternoons, they meet for story sessions, and, with Betty, they critique the drawn panels that Evans produces after each session.”
“Evans is still happily drawing the strip each day on a computer in his home office, but one day he would like to turn the job over to another illustrator, hopefully another family member. Jonathan Upchurch, Evans’ 27-year-old grandson by daughter, Rhonda, said he is excited about the prospect of one day following in his grandfather’s footsteps.”
Lot of "under age’ pregnancies. Now I do believe you are correct. Not necessasily because Luann is underage, but because Mr. Evans will not write the strip that way.
Agreed, it will be because Greg wants it that way. Frankly, I don’t see how her getting pregnant would further the story arc. She need to go to college, find someone to marry and start raising Luann Jr. In that order. :-)

Me, I’m curious to see what Knute has on at the prom. Will he and Crystal switch costumes again, or even switch prom outfits?
And, will we be given any further clues as to Rosa’s “Plan C”? Will she and Tiffany have something important to tell everybody?

1. Frank/Nancy are test tube babies.
2. Frank/Nancy adopted Luann.
3. Frank/Nancy are aliens.
4. Frank/Nancy’s Luann puppet came to life.
All those things are possible (well, I’d have some difficulty with #3-4) :-)
Just provide some evidence to support it, is all…

Very pretty dress. Nice contrast of greens for the choice of jewelry. This is the dawning of adulthood for Luann.

We have seen Nancy’s a couple of times.
And were they more “strawberry blondish” that you recall?
BTW, Lu is still “under age” in Calif., so I don’t think there will be any “activity” this night… :)
