Transcript:
Gene: We tried some high-end stuff at The Dock! It didn't go over! Mary Lou: That was my idea, you might add! Mary Lou: I admit I was wrong! People came to The Dock to eat fried seafood! Mary Lou: But I'm not talking about avant garde now! Just fresh local food for discerning diners! Gene: "Avant garde," that's French, isn't it? Gene: Babe, the restaurant has been closed a WEEK! Mary Lou: I know! I'm going crazy!

Is Gene getting in over his head?

Re: Is Gene getting in over his head?Who knows, with Gene. I don’t hear him making plans. It hasn’t just been a week – HE’S known about the Dock closing since the beginning of summer. It may not be as easy for Mary Lou because A) personality and B) long term she knows she has to provide for Meg – and anyone else that comes along. Gene doesn’t quite seem to have taken up that mantle.

I am a city kitty currently living in a country community and I can tell you that if the socio-ecomics and education of the community don’t match the restaurant, it will fail quick. I live 60 miles eat of Raleigh and a French (or German) place would fail in 3 months. All they know here is tobacco, fried pig skins, and what they call eastern NC BBQ. That’s all fine and good as its their home and their values but you could not import “outside” values in.

You also have to be worried about someone who must keep busy. Being busy just to be busy may mean you are hiding from something. However, if she has a passion for the business then that is another thing entirely. It is a rare person who gets paid for doing something they would do for free. Someone one said that if you find your true calling you will never “work” a day in your life again.

I have a 29yo nephew who has been in the restaurant industry since he was 16. Mary Lou’s behaviour is very authentic…
Observer fo Irony over 10 years ago
@eepeqezIf that is the case then Mary Lou needs to work in another restaurant but not her own. And Gene needs to find a job that he is comfortable with even if it out of the home.

Raleigh-Durham isn’t a bad place for an “international” restaurant; there are a lot of colleges and it’s in the Industrial Triangle. When my folks lived in Roxboro, the most exotic place in town was the Pizza Hut.

There does seem to be a lot of try, try again in the business.

I retired last year after 36 years of working, including going to college and raising my daughter. I had always told myself that I would “retire retire” and not work full-time or part-time after that, and so far, I’m keeping that promise. I am fortunate to be financially secure, so I can do volunteer work, travel a bit, see the grandchildren, and generally good off. If the kids can take tome time to do that, good on ’em!

Swim away Gene. Swim far, far away!

The success or failure of this bistro depends on how JJ wants their story to go. If it happens; for example, how long has Arlo wanted a boat?

Kind of ironic that one of Gus’ motivations to sell was to give Mary Lou a break!

Like I said earlier, she’s has withdraw symptoms.
Get her busy with something else, but be careful that’s not suggesting another mouth to feed plan.

Gene would rather go underwater and without air than have this conversation with his wife

A person who can admit to being wrong is well on her way to being right..Now, if she can just get over her love/hate relationship with her customers…..It is good that she feels the need to be busy and try to improve.

Ooo Boy… there is not much you can do when your wife looks at you like in the fourth panel either… all you can do is give in…

They have no income and are probably about to invest in a risky venture…GREAT time to be planning an expensive trip to Europe! Rent a travel video instead – or use this thing called the Internet!
