Quit walking around the concern, Quill.

So now Gunther is using the “phone a friend” lifeline… – First time the “Teflon Teen” had an expression on his face… no, I mean a real one…. Precocious, facetious, terse, deflective…all at once! He’d better be careful, he hasn’t had much experience with more than one…. – “Quill!” is as concerned with his agenda as Gunther is with his own! (Though it may really be in support of not getting in the middle. a sort of “going down under to get over”)… Of course, if it weren’t for their “tele-shock dinner”, Gunther probably wouldn’t be so obsessed with Mr. Gray, and would be “toughing” it out in Peru… – Well, guess it’s nice to know that Quill’s Blackberry ™ still works…

Great response, Quill! And if anyone has any doubts over why Gunther really wants to return to the states (and whether Gunther is really angry about his mother dating), this episode should clear up all the questions.-Sure doesn’t sound like Gunther is heading to the mountains with Rosa…

I thought that Quill! was a lousy cook. But judging by the size of Mr. Gray, it would appear that he doesn’t care!

MYOB, Gunther. You know what it’s about, and your mother’s love life is none of your business, so keep it that way.

Jealousy is the heart of so many of the really terrible violent acts that we seem to see more of each day. Just this weekend, a man traveled from Texas to Florida to try to talk his former girlfriend into getting back together (and his niece said she had begged him not to come). Former girl friend said no. He shot her and her daughter (they both survived, amazingly). He left for an RV park, where he first tried to shot himself, finally hanged himself. -Way too much of this is going on…

Maybe Gunther is just worried about “his inheritance”. There are a lot of unscrupulous people out to fleece lonely seniors of both sexes, and relationships are one way they do that. Or maybe he was just infused with control issues his whole life, and now aims to control, rather than to be controlled. Or maybe he’s a wimpy mama’s boy.
kenhense almost 10 years ago
I always thought Gunther was semi autistic – but I’ve never seen a son/Mom’s boyfriend panic like this. Time for a surprise! Greg – give Gunther a break!
utukki almost 10 years ago
Gunther’s attitude pisses me off. His (single!) mom spent his entire life dedicated to raising him, forgoing her own needs to make sure his were taken care of. Does he comprehend what kind of sacrifice that is? How freaking lonely single motherhood can be? Well, now he’s raised. He’s an adult and he needs to act like one, and let his mom have a chance to live her own life for a change. And he needs to figure this out quick before he does something incredibly stupid and selfish.

Gunther is only a cartoon character, completely at the mercy of Greg. I just wonder why Greg makes him the most pitiful wimp I’ve ever seen for year after year after year? Might as well keep these kids as high school sophomores. Very disappointing.

Gunther needs to grow up. Too bad Rosa isn’t just a little bit more down to earth in her plans – then she could get Gunther to show enthusiasm. Anyway, I hope Greg gives up on this story line soon – there are too many threads in the strip with Luann and her brother already splitting out of the main strip.

nanellen almost 10 years ago
@Rich, This is not boring. I had the same questions years ago when I discovered my mom, a widow, was seeing someone. When one is just out of high school, there are enough challenges without messing up the one constant in one’s life- at that moment. love the expressions on Quill.

Can you imagine a poor woman being married to Gunther, his mom would always come first.

Quill’s response to Gunther’s misguided inquisition is perfect! Gunther, you’re just going to love that isolated mountain village without wi fi….

He’s the brother of Wilber from neighboring strip Mary Worth. north of Pittsville at Charterstone Village, and yes, he too loves to eat!!Perhaps Mary can help Gunther though these difficult times he’s having….

Maybe all Mrs. Berger wants is 50 shades of Mr. Gray. (Choosing that name for him is probably meant to evoke that book…)

Gunther you should pay as much attentein to Rosa as you do you do your mothers friendships. You might get expierence in the facts of life!
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member almost 10 years ago
The reality IMHO is that Gunther is reacting pretty normally to the situation… THINK OF THIS: 1) Mrs. Berger was caught off guard in her reaction to any of the kids finding out about Mr. Gray. She did not really seem to want anyone to know, 2) This was clearly a surprise for Gunther as well. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++A loving family will be letting each other know about people they are dating/seeing. I recall that Gunther did NOT disguise the fact that he was dating Rosa from his mother…. why should/would SHE be hiding that she is dating Mr. Gray?!? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++With skype, e-mail, and all the other ways you can easily communicate with long distant relatives today…. there is absolutely NO REASON for anyone to be left out “in the dark” about important family & relationship information…. UNLESS YOU WANT TO LEAVE SOMEONE OUT OF THE LOOP++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Therefore…. I am in the exact opposite camp from all the folks who suggest Gunther “grow a pair” and all the other suggestions he is a “wuss”….. I think he is responding pretty normally after having had something HIDDEN FROM HIM that is actually something a family member would normally share and would normally WANT to share. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I think Mrs. Berger is more in the wrong here… she has been duplicitous. Gunther is responding in a hurt fashion to this duplicity.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
I think you are mistaken in your understanding of Gunther’s jealousy. He is not jealous of Mr. Gray because he, Gunther, is in love with his mother. He is jealous because, like a very young child, he doesn’t want to share his mother’s attention with anyone else. The same thing happens with an only child when a second child is born.-This ‘I won’t share’ jealousy is still seriously destructive of all the lives it touches, but it is not based on romantic attraction…
Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
R.U. Sirius? I thought Dr. Mel was just ‘sanity challenged’?
Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
He has been having problems sharing his mother’s attention to Quill, but in two ways. One, when he thought his mother was interfering too much in his ‘adult’ relationship with Quill by such things as bringing milk and cookies into their bedroom when he was trying to talk to Quill, and, two, that example you showed when Gunther was concerned that Quill was trying to be attractive to his mother. -Gunther is a complicated guy, all right, but I still don’t think it’s about romantic love for his mother. He just doesn’t want anyone else to have her attention for any reason. AND he doesn’t want her to interfere when he wants to be involved with anyone else, including Quill…
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member almost 10 years ago
While I think the comic you cited may suggest she may consider doing “other things” after Gunther leaves… it is about as clear as mud in regards to it being a declaration of intent to date Mr. Gray. With that notion in mind, I still suggest that Mrs. Berger is/was being duplicitous in NOT talking to her (apparently) closest living relative…. whom she loves…. her adult son, about the important things going on in her life. I would suggest that a real or even potential dating partner would qualify as a talking point between relatives who are caring for each other and are not trying to hide something. So, to me, it still seems like Gunther’s reaction/behavior is fairly normal given the circumstances. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++To me, an analogy of how this would be perceived: Imagine Gunther and his Mom talking fairly regularly (via skype, or whatever)….. they talk about all sorts of things going on in their life… but what if Mrs. Berger had fallen, broken a hip or a leg, and did not tell Gunther about it? That would also be duplicitous, and I think it would be pretty hurtful to Gunther to be left out of that information as well.

I think we both agree that Gunther needs help…
wiselad almost 10 years ago
either get help(slow process that needs perseverance) or that he reaches an epiphany(fast and instantaneous) are the only 2 things that can change him, hope Greg decided to bring an epiphany in the mountains to BOTH Gunther and Rosa, will be disappointed if there is none and he returns to pittsville

What is wrong with Gunther, that he can’t be happy that his mother might have some companionship? Eep… this is getting weird.
gromit82 almost 10 years ago
Instead of interrogating Quill about Mr. Gray, maybe Gunther should be interrogating Rosa with questions like these:
“Do you know WHICH mountain village we’re going to?”“What are we going to do there with no medical training?”“Where are we going to live in the village?”“When and how are you going to tell your uncle and our co-workers about us leaving the office jobs?”
And that’s not even getting into questions which Gunther and Rosa are likely to ignore, like how they are going to get paid, and how Gunther is going to communicate with the locals with his apparent lack of Spanish skills.
I don’t get the impression that Rosa and Gunther have gotten any better at finding out vital information that they ought to know than they were a few months ago.
Gokie5 almost 10 years ago
People have been dissing Gunther. His attitude may be hard to take, but if he has Asperger’s or something like it, he has a true disability and can’t pull himself up by his bootstraps. May not have any (figurative) bootstraps to pull. As Jimmy Durante used to say, “What a revoltin’ development this is!”
seyleigh almost 10 years ago
Personally, I can see why Gunther is acting that way.
A) He is insecure. What if his mom prefers Mr. Gray to him?
B) He is concerned. He hasn’t met this guy yet. What if Mr. Gray hurts his mom?
C) He isn’t mature enough to hide his immature feelings.
D) Gunther is already stressed from moving to a foreign country. This is just the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Hi, Brdshtt…your robot sounds like a Barbie doll I have. Have many different sorts of clothes for her and I enjoy dressing her seasonally. The only problem I have is the doll I was using “broke” her hand and I can’t seem to get it to stay on (even after all of those heavy-duty plastic bonds I can find!). And I can’t use the present Barbies as their bodies have changed and the new clothes don’t fit anymore… Sigh. LOL ;)
