Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for May 10, 2015
Transcript:
Pig: Things are going pretty well for you these days, Steph. Pastis: Quick... Knock three times on wood. Pig: Why? Pastis: Because if you say how well things are going and you don't knock on wood, you're inviting bad luck! Pig: You don't really believe that, do you, Steph? Pastis: You bet your @#@ I do! Now hurry up and find wood to knock on before-

It is a superstition, but is it a superstition to be ignored? I don’t actually know. I’ve had instances where I’ve jokingly said their knock on wood instances, but didn’t do so and had bad luck follow. And I’ve had instances where I didn’t do so and had good luck follow. Instances where I did so and had good luck follow, and instances where I did so and bad luck followed. Which would suggest a superstition to be ignored. The irony is the instances where I didn’t do so and had bad luck and the instances where I did do so and had good luck follow actually out number their opposite. Coincidental and doesn’t prove a thing.

In Yiddish you must say “Kunna-horah” (spelling?) – It refers to the evil eye

Ksssshhhhh!Today’s Mother’s Day Special is Pastiscakes with maple syrup and sliced bananas. Don’t slip on the peels; that would be bad luck. You have to be really unlucky to get squashed by a falling piano while seated at your own desk, ehh, Cartoon-Boy?

Better to error on the side of caution…knock on wood !……Me thinks that this habit came from earlier times and was a way to check and see that the wood was good for building.

You’re supposed to knock THREE times???? OMG no wonder….

Something tells me that Rat is responsible for the falling piano. Or possibly Wile E. Coyote.

Something tells me that Stephan is fixing to “un-die.”

Pig shoulda knocked on Steph’s skull!
rajasetlur over 9 years ago
Just a plain KSSSSSSSH?? With 220 bones breaking and fifty odd strings snapping one would expect a philharmonic orchestra cracking and twanging. And Pig was so close in the previous panel – did the piano not hit because he did not believe in the belief?

it still counts Steph…

Why do I get the feeling Rat was at the other end of that piano?
abbybookcase over 9 years ago
i always knock on wood, or lacking any wood, i’ll knock on my head. i still do this even though i learned the origin of the superstition has to do with christ on the cross. did i say that i’m jewish?

When they pry him out from under the piano, he will have black and white keys in place of his teeth.

Pastis is lucky, though, he could have had a pile of lemmings (or crocs) fall on him……
phlash over 9 years ago
…and on that note……that really struck a chord……proving that if you don’t C#, you’ll B♭…
