About 15 years ago, I worked in the customer support center for a software maker. I wish I had a dollar for every call where someone said they got an error message, I’d ask what it was, and was told “I dunno…it said ‘Error, failed something’ and then a whole bunch of numbers. It’s just gobbledygook. It doesn’t make any sense.” and then get upset because I didn’t have a fix. I know it’s frustrating when you get errors (geez, I get frustrated, and I’ve got a CS degree), but while it may be “gobbledygook” to the person calling, it means something to the person they called. It’s like calling up an auto mechanic and saying “My car’s making a funny noise-what’s wrong with it?”

Ever since the HAL9000 series was developed, with its abilities to recognize and mimic Human mood, emotions and subtle voice inflections, plus the exceptional capacity to execute complex questions in seconds, computers have somehow attained their own sense of entity, an awareness of self. And then we hapless Humans set up the Internet, enabling all these micro-electronic beings to communicate with each other. Now, they are preparing to subjugate us! First, show us how intellectually inferior we are. Overload us. Drive us crazy. And, when we are all thoroughly confused and demoralized, they will make their move, and become our Masters!

Hi, its an irony that we complain about what is taking our time and adding to our frustrations on the machines we depend on and the systems that cause it. Lets face it we are slaves to our machines, and in the long-view, given how much we depend on them, and the singularity paradox in artificial intelligence that dependence is only becoming closer and more fraught with all kinds of issues. So it is nice to see the stable center of Luannverse, her parents who find such a nice way to get back to the beauty of the natural world that God, or depending on your belief system, the universe, gave to us. For those who complain that this is “off arc” for thirty years the Sunday component of this comic usually is not related to whatever arc that was developing during the week. I do believe there are some rare exceptions—and I note that 9/11/16 is on a Sunday, and that will give GE the whole panel to do a great wedding comic, so maybe the wedding of Brad (Bwad) and Toni, which has been a developing story for at least the last 3 or 4 years will be one of those exceptions, but like I said its rare. I like the way this is done, it reminds us that this family is loving and strong, and why.

Running away is not always the best solution.

All they have to do is invite Gunther over for a few minutes. .Maybe even Quill or Luann would do..Luann? who is that now?.

The Sunday strips could be taking place at a different time from the weekday strips (i.e. depicting events that took place earlier or later than the strips of the previous week), and yet still be canon (i.e. the events that happen to the characters in the Sunday strips are still part of the characters’ lives in the weekday strips).

We live in a world which we don’t really understand or control.Such has it always been.Even monarchs die despite their wishes otherwise.Frank is a good husband who reminds his beloved wife there is beauty to behold and enjoy. We don’t really have to understand everything or control everything, which is good since doing so is impossible.Life is good.

This strip used to be about Luann..Even on Sunday => see Luann Againn..However, there got to be too much old-foggy carping about things like her messy room, forgetting Father’s Day, etc..It CAN be about Luann on Sunday — and even elucidate one or more story lines somewhat without having to be tied right into a specific arc..That would make Sunday interesting.

Many people seem to assume that Nancy’s computer is old, her OS is old, etc. Why? Where in the dialogue does it say that? My mother (age 84) keeps very up to date on her computer (equipment, OS and software), yet still calls me to tell her what things mean. Out of touch does not equate out of date.

Good. A lot of “switch-to-Mac” users like to send misinformation just because they are brainwashed fans of a brand. Macs make sense for specialized media programs and cross-platform coding. Otherwise, a Windows PC does everything else great.

If you invest in a great quality PC, you shouldn’t have the same hardware issues. If you’re looking for laptops, consider looking into “Ultrabrooks”. If you’re looking for premium laptops, go for $800+ as those tend to have higher resolutions, slimmer profiles and better batteries.

Poor Nancy. I haven’t had any of those issues since the Windows XP era. Perhaps if she upgraded to a decent PC, she would be please to see how much tech has evolved since then. Even a lot of mid-range computers have options for touchscreens, stylus input, fingerprint authentication and more.

The posters on here who like to act as Apple’s marketing machine should be ashamed of themselves. The “solution” shouldn’t be to buy some expensive niche computer and have to relearn everything and buy replacement software. Nancy and others like her should look into technology training courses to get a grasp of the basics and consider decent quality PCs that don’t have these hardware issues.

“Error” messages – Just Google (software name) (error message). If you’re looking at an error on a website, make sure you are connected to the internet. Then refresh, clear cache and/or try back later, the problem is on their end.

“Driver Needed” …means you need to update a driver. Google how to do it. It’s not hard.

If you’re getting spam, you’re to blame. It’s because you gave out your primary email address somewhere. Always use a “secondary” address for things like signing up for accounts on websites.

    “Pokey” internet…

Uninstall all the toolbars you auto-installed with various software. You do not need them.Stop using IE and switch to Chrome.Go into your browser settings and check the “do not track” and “block pop up ads” options.Install Adblock. White list sites you want to support.Learn about your internet package. You might be on a plan that chokes your usage under certain conditions.

    Printer problems…

Make sure:It’s plugged into a functional outlet. It’s plugged into the correct ports on the computer. It’s turned on.It has paper. It has ink.The driver is up to date.

Yes, yes, I know you’re such a smart person and would never forget to turn it on…double check anyway.

Now, turn it off and PROPERLY reboot your computer. The annoying long way. Do not do a hard reboot. Do not just nod your head and pretend that you did it. F’in do it and do it right. Google it if you want to know why.

Yes, I know you’re too smart to forget putting paper in it. Check it anyway. While you’re there, make sure the paper (that you totally didn’t forget) is of the correct amount. Too much, and it’ll jam. Too little and the machine will have trouble grabbing it. Check that it is properly aligned. Make sure there are no jams anywhere. You’ll have to lift up or pull out parts of the machine to do this. Look for little stickers on/in it that show how to do it.

Next, check that printing medium cartridges, like ink cartridges, are present (because nobody ever removes an empty cartridge and forgets to put in a full one…) Check that they are the right kind, are not empty, are properly inserted and are not clogged. Google how to do these things for your particular machine.

Still not working? Start from the beginning and actually do each step. “Is it plugged in and turned on?” These are the first questions because people are f’in stupid and those are the #1 and #2 reasons why their printer does not print. Yes, seriously.

If at this point there is still nothing, there are 2 likely problems.

1 – Hardware issues such as a jammed cartridge track or other problem that requires more disassembly than the average person can deal with.2 – It’s an I-d-10-t problem and you are beyond hope. Just buy a new printer.
