    @David Hui Green

    Yesterday, you posted a statement about how there is really no difference in salary between men and women when ‘apples’ are compared to ‘apples’ (in other words, when time off the job to raise kids or other interruptions in time on the job are properly noted.) You also opined that since women distrust previous studies on this subject, another is being done at taxpayer expense.

    I know nothing about taxpayer funded studies on this subject. What I am aware of is that there are significant numbers of children in the US who are living in poverty because they are either being raised by a single mother, or their mother is the main breadwinner in the family, and her lower salary leaves them to experience either potential loss of a home or insufficient food.

    It is no accident that there are now so many kids who are dependent on their public schools in order to get enough to eat, and no accident that food banks have become much more active in summer (when school is out) than during the winter holiday season.

    You might want to take a look at salaries for careers that have been traditionally seen as ‘womens’, i.e., nursing and teaching. You may be surprised to learn that men in teaching may earn more than women, and male nurses may earn more than female nurses, even with comparable amounts of time on the job. Sorry that I don’t have the studies handy to cite them, but I’ve seen them.

    If you are not interested in the fairness of this issue for adult women, you may want to be a bit concerned about how this affects children of both genders when their health and well being are at stake because their mother the waitress brings home less than a male waiter, or their mother the cook brings home less than a male ‘sous chef’ or whatever…

    So, Bernice wants a consultation with Gunter over coffee. Will this be about Piro or someother unrelated topic that Gunther doesn’t expect or is interested in? Maybe she wants to discuss Kayla preparedness!

    Almost certainly Bernice wants to ask Gunther, as someone who is spending a lot of time with Tiffany, whether Tiff and Piro are an item. (I doubt that they are, since Piro seems interested only in sponging off anyone and everyone who will let him.) Can Gunther then please realize that Bern is definitely not his soulmate, and can he please meet the one of the thousands of other female students at Moony Uni who in fact might be? Since this strip has moved on from high school in its setting, why do these same few people still have to be forced into pairings with one another?

    @Sherrif Mordecai:“Well, if THIS isn’t a hieroglyphic stereotype, I don’t know WHAT is! "I am very offended by this strip. As a progressive person who has a friend who knows someone who once met a guy who was half-Egyptian, I can say with great authority that actual Egyptians do not walk that way. Nor do they ever utter inanities such as “whey oh whey oh” or even “oh yeah uh huh.”This is yet another egregious display of a tired cliche. If Team Evans truly desired to bring meaningful diversity to the Luanniverse, they would introduce a new girl to the strip with cat-eye makeup and Cleopatra jewelry. With her loud, pet Nubian goat, A’ars.

    @Schrodinger’s Dog: “I’m a big Steven Wright fan!”Except that none of those one-line puns that JPuzzleWhiz posted were Steven Wright lines. But there are so many “Steven Wright Quotes” sites on the Net that attribute stuff to him that are not his, I can see how things get confused. (Unless you knew all this already and were just referring to liking the general style of his jokes.)Here’s what Steven Wright actually said about that phenomenon a few years back: “About five years ago, somebody showed me some web sites that had my material all over them, and I thought that was fascinating. One reason was, I’d never seen my jokes written one right after another like that. I write on drawing paper — I don’t even like lines on the paper — so I have notebooks all over the place with handwritten pieces of my act in them. So to see it go by, all typed out neatly, was like, ‘Wow.’ And then two or three years ago, someone showed me a site, and half of it that said I wrote it, I didn’t write. Recently, I saw one, and I didn’t write any of it. What’s disturbing is that with a few of these jokes, I wish I had thought of them. A giant amount of them, I’m embarrassed that people think I thought of them, because some are really bad.”

    Why doesn’t Gunther take a Moony Uni course in fashion design, meet a nice girl there who enjoys sewing, and forget about the girls from Pitt HS with whom he has always been unable to achieve a meaningful and lasting relationship?
