Luann: Sometimes I'm so mad at my ex I just want to- Luann: other time I'm mad at me and I feel like- Man: Class, look at Ms. DeGroot's brilliant take on love. Clearly she's in a fun, successful, contented relationship!
“A Bunch Of Thin Lines Between Love And Hate” (♫)“Drawn Between A Rock And A Hard Place”“A Tale Of Two Kiddies”“Zebo, Zilch, Zip”“An ’Artist’s’ Misconception”“Paying Abstract Attention”“Is It Love Or Is It Gas?”“I, Spiral”“A Fusion Of Confusion”“Oh, Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (♪)or“Assume The Juxtaposition”
Actually, from the drawing with jumbled lines, it would seem that Luann is so mad at Quill, she’s already turning to a life of subway graffiti- it’s only a quick transition from paper to sidewalks covered in chalk….
From my quick reading of comments this morning there is so much criticism of the Zebo character, the lack of quality of teaching, the fact that Luann is in the class after apparently finishing a semester, the apparent arrogance, etc, etc. I think people miss the point though. Zebo is a plot device, as is the class. He is a way for Luann to express her feelings in art, and art is a very wide spectrum to express thoughts. The other two characters are delightful, and almost like Shakespearean minor characters, who comment on the drama going on with the major characters for comedic, and dramatic effect. I am not sure which of the two pieces of “art” were drawn by Luann, but both indicate someone who is conflicted, confused, and going through the early stages of grief over trying to accept that she broke up with someone she really cared about.
7Thus far, Professor Zebo has always been fairly perceptive and has guided the students reasonably well. Today seems to be an aberration. However, before I pass judgement on Zebo, I am going to take a wait-and-see attitude. It may be that he is actually just warming up for a major point and a major revelation. It could also be (although it does not appear so) that Zebo is being facetious in his comment about Luann’s art. We shall have to wait and see.
You know, I actually agree with the professor and still ship Quill and Luann…What has been failed to understand is true love isn’t all happiness all the time. There will be arguments and conflict. But afterwards, you communicate. You listen. You compromise. Just drives me crazy seeing Luann give up so easily after she fought for him when he first showed up. My hope is that after this week, she’ll realize she still has a bit of that old fight inside her. I may be in the minority…I know Quill’s not perfect, but neither is Luann. Mistakes were made, and now they can both learn from them.
If you go back a day and look at the assignment, it was to be “an expression.”The expressionists were not concerned with technique but feelings—which can be inchoate, so hard to translate and interpret. Back to today, Luann did express her conflicted feelings and Zebo got them hilariously wrong.
Look up the word “pretentious” in the dictionary and Zebo’s picture will be next to the definition. Had a theater prof like him in college…very creepy dude.
Monsieur Zébo would have to perform at a much higher lever to be considered a gross caricature of an art instructor! As he is, he plays the clownish fool while completely mis-interpreting Ms. DeGroot’s current state of mind (not to mention her artistic accomplishments)….
ZEBO ZEBO ZEBO! (I’m thinking of Gabbo from the Simpsons) – how much are they charging these students?? $1500 a credit hour? Zebo should be paying them.
-The difference is that Luann discussed what decision she might make with Quill before making the decision (unlike his decision to forgo spending a holiday with her so he could work on the Fuse, or deciding to take a job with a traveling theater show).
As a part of this discussion, didn’t they also agree that most of the time in New York, Quill would be too busy with his internship to spend much time with Luann, anyway?
And as far as we know with this school kid program, Luann didn’t repeatedly put that job ahead of spending time with Quill.
This is why I figure than any compromising was strictly done only by Luann.
There may actually be a trace of irony or sarcasm in the professor’s comment. On the other hand, if it was supposed to be an exercise in abstract expressionism then it is not so far off..Superficially at least
. I know this isn’t a forum for bragging on your kid sorry if it offends anyone (well not really).************Brag away all you want as far a I am concerned ;-)
First of all as a student, friend and acquaintance of many teachers and professors I have found the tired old saying “those who can’t, teach” is not true at all and insulting as well***********THANK YOU!
Lonnie…. I thank you very much for your kind words about those of us who teach. Being a professor for more decades than I’d care to admit, I have heard the old, annoying phrase “Those who can’t, teach” too many times to count. The reality is that teaching is a very strenuous career and to teach well, you often end up performing like in the Bob Seger song where it says, “Every ounce of energy, you try to give away.”Although some here will berate teacher(s) both individually and collectively, it is a noble profession and is sadly, IMO undervalued. As a professor, I am especially in awe of the energy and stamina needed to be a good elementary school teacher. I will often travel to a variety of local elementary schools in my region and give a variety of science talks to different ages of elementary students. I feel more exhausted from a single day of high energy teaching in a room of 30 third graders than I do in any of my college courses.
And, in regards to Zebo…. I still suspect he will end the arc with some real insight for the class…. even if he is incorrect about Luann’s love status. I still worry it may be an indication by Greg that Luann and Quill will get back together. :) But, oh well…. even if they do, it will be ok.
Sung to the melody of the Gatlin Brothers’ “All The Gold in California” …
(♫)All the art, in Zēbo’s art class …Is in the minds of the students who never know whatHe’s going to think is really art …So if you’re stuck thereJust scribble something,‘cause ol’ Zēbo wouldn’t know actual artIf it bit him on his head.-This nut, professor ZēboIs looking more like Zero …He’s so pretentious,We wonder why he’s here …He must not have a talent,Or else he’d be exultant,‘cause remember those who can’t do,are the ones who teach.-(repeat chorus)
In my high school the chemistry teacher went missing. We students never knew what happened. He had taught very little by then. For a very long time we had substitutes who typically knew no chemistry. Just months before the end of the semester an industry chemist was hired to teach us. I was certainly not among the better students in the class, but as far as i know Mr. Owens taught us well enough in that short time remaining that each of us who took the chemistry regents exam passed it. I know i did. So, he did both, too. Kind man as well, very fatherly toward the students.

I guess all of the art world phonies who can’t find real success end up teaching at community colleges.

I hope the DeGroots can get a refund for the tuition they paid for this class. It’s clearly a waste of both money and Luann’s time.

Shouldn’t they at least be at easels? Them sitting at tables while drawing pictures doesn’t seem all that collegiate to me.

Professor Ze-Bats is RIGHT for Once!
Luann’s Drawing is Ab-So-Lutely BRILLIANT!!!
Every Person that Looks at it, Sees something different.
Some see the ‘Death Spiral’ of the US Economy.
Others see a Representation of the Confusion and Naivety of the ‘Millennials.’
