I can see it now. Instead of becoming a teacher, Luann will create a finishing school, where young ladies can learn to be confident, poised, and outgoing just like Luann.
Frank’s question about pay is very appropriate. Not in connection with his own lust for money, but in terms of getting Luann to sensibly assess her life priorities.
If Luann gets suckered into tutoring or mollycoddling a basket case wimp, just because it gives her a warm feeling, and is only being paid a pittance — then until she changes her priorities she’ll go nowhere with her life. At this point in time, she may be the overly sympathetic type that could go that way.
She might as well become a social worker. They work with the dregs and don’t get paid squat.
Uh-Oh. Daddy is taking Luann’s money and putting it into The Fuse. After all, it was her fault the camp was an epic failure, resulting in a loss of revenue, so her income from Fay goes back into The Fuse. I believe Luann will fight her father for the money. She is now college aged, she will not submissively hand over money she worked for.
@WIZARDGOAT: I have two friends, now retired, who spent their lives as social workers. The first one started his career working with kids who had been taken from abusive parents, counseling them to help them get over their fears and self-blame, and help them to accept care from adoptive homes. He later worked with PTSD vets. My second social worker friend is a woman who worked with rape survivors.
*
While I agree with you that social workers are not paid nearly enough, I see no reason to call those who survive crimes ‘the dregs’. You obviously have been fortunate enough in your life not to need the help of a social worker.
ow Luann…what exactly have she done to make her parents proud, besides graduating high school and working with children in a daycare? Thus why they are treating her like this. What money? Who is Fay? Why would her mom pay Luann? Who would pay their goofy daughter to be a life coach? She could barely manage her own.
I had hoped that Fay was a little older than 13, so that she might eventually interact with some other Luann characters on a peer level. As it is, Fay could be in danger of developing a crush on Luann, since she has no other friends. Hopefully, Luann will ask Fay about who she knows in school – and steer her toward relating to some of them. Nevertheless, Fay babysitting Shannon could be real helpful.
Nancy’s memory flash-back may be more than just nostalgia. The strip was better at portraying a group of 13-year-olds than it is at portraying a group of college-age young adults. Maybe in the coming months Fay (and the friends whom Luann teaches her to meet) will be featured more heavily, and the “old” cast less often, if the strip wishes to return to its core strength.
Personally I think it would be great if her parents continual to shell out thousands of dollars to improve LuAnn’s self esteem and aid in her quest for fulfillment. Though I question whether it’s really their responsibility. That burden should really lie with the government and those who refuse to pay their fair share.
And clearly, Nancy misses the point. Luann knows, from first-hand experience, pretty much just what Fay is going through at 13! Luann is hardly perfect (who is?), but if this pans out right – Fay AND Luann will both benefit from it!
I used to like Nancy as a character, but the more she runs her child down, the less interest I have in her. She was intensely defensive of Brad when she thought that Toni was taking advantage of him. But when a stranger seems interested in hiring Luann to help that stranger’s daughter, all Nancy can do is comment that the stranger obviously didn’t know Luann when she was 13. So Nancy apparently was a paragon of perfection when she was 13. Kinda like some of the posters here allege themselves to be, I guess.
Better that Luann was also lacking in those qualities. As she turned out to have them all now, she can give Fay what she needs to reach those milestones without so much misery in between.
Luann is gaga (and hungry; thank goodness for parents’ fridge full). Nancy waxes nostalgic, in a critical sense. Frank is playing the dad card, being very practical about Luann’s new gig: does it pay well?
Fay’s mom: are you sure this is what you want your daughter to use as her model?
Fay? Have fun, gain confidence, become all you can be!
Man these comments really reflect commenter’s projections of the way they look at life. Troll like commenter’s take a totally obverse view of happy and uplifting panels, such as Luann getting excited about helping a shy child become more confident, and well-adjusted, with comments that she is going to be a social worker, who are themselves dregs, and work with even less. Man, so mean!! Or comments that Luann’s mother/parents are somehow not treating her well because of their comments about Luann as a young girl herself (who was an example of insecurity, and maladjustment as a 12 or 13 year old child), or conversely that they actually prefer Luann and her friends as the 12 or 13 year old kids they were portrayed in the past, because the current panels just do not portray young adults well. Can’t we all just enjoy the fun and growth of the characters? No? Well it’s human nature I guess. Personally I think this is a wonderful arc, the end of which I can’t predict, but I enjoy it, and I guess being one who likes to see the good in things, people, and even cartoon arcs I offer a contra view.
Others, like Puzz, often note the passing of important figures and of celebrities (sometimes a person being both, but often not) and today i will do so:
RIP: Judith Jones, one of the pivotal editors of the twentieth century. She was the editor who rescued Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl” from a publisher’s reject pile. She was the editor who brought us the cookbooks of such culinary wonders as Julia Child, Madhur Jaffrey, Marcella Hazan, and other important chefs. In addition, she edited the works of major writers including John Updike. She has passed at age 93. Here is to her and to others like her who are behind the scenes yet do so much to shape our times
