Chess club members with receding hairlines and coke bottle glasses going door to door seeking new members. That is something I don’t remember from my college days.
Interesting growth and recidivism of GnK’s characters in the Luannaverse. Brad is a dufus, becomes a fireman, wins Toni, and becomes a dufus again. Tiffany was a shallow, bimbo who had massive insecurities, seemed to be on a path towards thinking of others, and now we’ve seen that possibility yanked away from the character. Gunther was a mommy’s boy, even to the point of sewing dresses. He then chases a woman to Peru – he’s maturing and well on his way to becoming a man? Nope! He then loses Irma, mommy, to a man, and gains a thuggish dolt who dominates him! Yes, velly interesting.
Speaking of chess guys and cruel women, I remember a For Better or For Worse cartoon where a bunch of teenage girls were assembled. One said something like, “Nerd Alert! Large one spotted 42 degrees NW and approaching.” Just like money – some guys got it – some don’t…
Tiffany HAS grown….the old Tiffany would have insulted and berated the poor chess guy and told him to get lost. The new Tiffany simply closes the door. Her mantra is now “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything” and the closing door is a metaphor of that.
Hmmmm. Some “folks” are “celebrating” the return of the “Old Tiffany.” Others Are condemning it.
Going back to the “Old (High School) Tiff” might not be such a bad thing. THAT Tiff despised Le$. On the other hand she considered Gunther (And Everybody else) beneath her.
Tough call.
I still think all THIS is but a “front” and the Real Tiffany is hiding behind a “wall” here.
With Tiff. this week, We’ve gone from. “Wonderful Wonder Spa,” To Plus Sized Modelling, to a forced “Meet the New Tiffany.” And it’s only Wednesday. And very few “folks” are even asking about Ann anymore after literally demanding her head a few months. Strange.
Enough is enough. There’s “acceptance,” and there’s “capitulation.” THIS, IMHO, is “capitulation.”
Bernice? When You’re done snarking, ask Tiffany the question that has at least been on this Evil COFFEE Drinker’s mind: WHAT-ABOUT-ANN? And more taictlessly you ask that question, the better.
I’ve got a feeling that Tiff’s “wall” may crumble quickly at that point. And Bern and Dez May see a side of Her that so far, only Gunther has seen.
I just dunno. Something seems bit “OFF” here. And I’m not talking about Me and My “rocker.” ;)
Socrates, or maybe Plato, I always get my Hellenic philosophers mixed up, said “know thyself”. Tiffany knows herself. What’s so big about that? Apparently she has come to terms with her situation with her dad, and possibly Ann. Time will tell, but we are in the new semester, so the arc’s should be focusing on and around school themes.
Well, it’s not really Tiffany’s fault- After al, this guy had the audacity to show up when she was still stuck on her one thought…
-
…But perhaps when Tiffany is ready to handle a second thought, or more than one thing at a time, he’ll be there, waiting. After all, waiting is the polite thing to do….and as a bonus, she can see how patient he is!
Gotta say, this whole experience had really humbled Tiffany. I like it! Even though Tiffany will always be Tiffany, this new nice Tiffany is alright with me :)
@blunebottle: I hope you were just being funny with your comment about judging Tiffany. For anyone to say that they are now more open minded about others, and therefore a new person, and to shut a door in someone’s face, is to invite a comment that they are not as open minded as they say they are. That applies to Tiffany as well as anyone else. Leaving the soapbox now…
Some say Bernice is being judgmental. Oh, nay, nay. Bernice is being perceptive and voicing her perceptions. Judgmental would be if Bernice said “Tiffany is a phony.”
This week looks to be a transition strip. We left Tiffany in a hurt and vulnerable place. Rejected by her father, crushed by her foe [Ann ‘Eyeful’] and abandoned by her (mis)perceived emotional savior of the moment [I.e, Les].
Then we had two “Tiffany epiphanies,” well, pseudo-epiphanies, with the Mrs. Fogerty arc and self-reported Lala Spa experience. So it appears Greg is trying to establish Tiffany as the same old character with superficial appearance changes. Similar to Gunther’s stubble and hair. In fact, the moving in arc did the same thing with Gunther and Les.
Looks like we’re seeing hints for the upcoming fall and winter arcs. More school-life experiences.
That was rude of Tiffany. She should keep her door shut if she didn’t want people talking to her. He could have been there to say, "Hi, I’m here to give you free scholarship money.
Okay, before We go any further, remember this from 2015?
https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2015/08/07
Note Panel three. Same attitude, same Old Tiffany as today, except 30 pounds lighter back then. Embracing to her friends, but indifferent to strangers.
But the question remains, how will this “Tiffany” (6.0) relate to her friends in the long run, and is what We’ve seen of her this week just a “front?”
“Hi! I’m – "… interrupting a private conversation that Tiffany is having with her friends, is what you’re doing. She was discussing her inner feelings, and you (whoever you are) have no business butting in, even though she left the door open. That was clearly an oversight on the girls’ part, and she was justified in correcting it by shutting it in your face. (I suspect anyone else in the dorm, male or female, would have done the same.) I assume you are someone who is selling deliberately humorous geeky sweatshirts door-to-door, so go knock on Hair’s door. He might want a “Chess Club” one as a gag, too.
I think a lot of people missed the significance of Sharon Harris’s question. How does ANYONE DESERVE attention from someone else, like the person providing the attention is a prize that the one getting the attention deserved? Aren’t all people, well, people? No one exists as a reward for someone else. Right?
I wonder what exactly the chess club student (who conspicuously resembles Mr. DeGroot but with a different nose) wanted. Is he someone’s new roommate? Otherwise…what does he do, look in random students’ doors and introduce himself?
Chess guy’s biggest loser-move was interrupting chubby Tiffany’s self-laudatory speech. Otherwise, who knows, she might have been open to him. Maybe she’d even take up chess and like it! (Yeah, I know, that’s a stretch—but it could happen….)
The Stockholm Syndrome (or is it just sarcasm) is strong among the trufans today. The plain of reading of today’s strip is: Tiff is saying “Don’t judge! Be open to … [slams door in a new person’s face] others!” Obviously – and I repeat, obviously – the intended joke is that Tiff is not practicing what she’s now preaching. The chief rudeness here is NOT a nerdy guy standing in the hallway and waving and saying hi.
When Mr. Rude barged in with his interruption, Tiff should have frowned at him in scorn and then just shut the door. That may in fact be exactly what she did. There is no indication that she slammed it shut.
Tiffany’s closing the door to protect a private conversation is a completely justifiable action. Greg’s joke fails, by making Mr. Rude the bad guy here.

Give her time. It takes time. It would be interesting if someone called her on it (nicely) tomorrow; whispering doesn’t help.
PS. I think Tiffany has always loved herself (i.e. photos on her wall), it’s the latter that need work, but that’s harder and can be said for many.
