Gunther is standing up to the worthless punk and not flinching one bit! More importantly Les is Hesitating! Who’d Thunk??
So what are You waiting for “Tough Guy?” Go ahead and Punch the Dweeb! Or Are Ya Yellow??
Seriously though, THIS is a break through. Gunther’s got guts and Les is refraining from violence. Well at least for now.
Now If this were back in the High School days, Gunther would be cowering in fear and Les would be pounding the daylights out of him.
There might be slim HOPE for these cats yet.
But there’s still there’s still the Tiffany “problem.” Will she come back at 8 or will she call Les or will Les go over to her place? Hmmm. Whatever happens, Gunther, apologize to Les then apologize to Tiffany for last week, then trust her judgement, and cut your loses. There are other young women out there.
I kind of want Les to hit Gunther because he deserves it but that won’t teach him anything. All his life he has talked down to people and tried to control/manipulate them. He tried to control Luann, Rosa and now Tiffany. I don’t think Les will hit Gunther. I don’t think he really wants to that’s just how he is used to dealing with his problems…hopefully he won’t and it will show growth.
In real life if Les has not popped Gunther yet, he never would, but this is Luannverse so I will waffle on absolutely saying he would not. However I doubt it very highly. I really don’t think Gunther is afraid of Les, and Les does have a bit of bully in him, but neither is Les a truly violent person, nor is Gunther a total wimp as some seem to portray him. Les is more likely to be physically confrontational, while Gunther is more likely to be cerebral. I think another end to this particular arc besides physical violence will be presented.
This is the reason why the gangsters are always punching the guy in the stomach because it doesn’t leave a mark. Didn’t Leslie learn this from his uncle or his mother? I thought the time he punched Knute out, he punched him in the stomach. You would think a kid who spent all his time in school beating up other kids would already know this.
I think the puff in the sails has gone. After an exchange of jabs, they will cool off and talk. Perhaps Les will admit his big talk about “pouncing” is all it is – big talk. He does not act on it. Perhaps talk about his childhood.
I was really hoping that a new arc with an entirely different story would be waiting for us. The lame dialog in this arc shows that the whole thing is running out of pep…
I don’t want to see Gunther get physically hurt. However I am still bugged that Gunther thinks he is emperor of the moral high ground. While posturing that he’s just trying to protect Tiffany, it seems obvious that Gunther is impacted by jealousy due to his own inadequacy to get things started with a prospective girlfriend. Maybe it’s best if we hear the doorbell and it’s Tiffany returning for her 8:00 PM date with Les. If so, Gunther should retreat to his room – with his tail between his legs. And I believe Tiffany can put the brakes on Les if she doesn’t want to get (pounced).
I see the makings of a love triangle here, which NEVER end well. Sure the idea of sharing a love interest is entertained for a while. Then the novelty wears off and one wants all the love, attention, and quality time for self. Then the love triangle dissolves……violently
One thing is glaringly obvious… and yet, sorely missed: Tiffany is still Tiffany – and is she really such a great “catch” (so to speak)?Move on, Gunther and Leslie… plenty of other fish in the sea. Don’t settle for a carp.
Men need women more than women need men. Technically, all women need is a decent variety of male DNA/squirt. Men are territorial, hierarchical, and testostorone-driven. EVERYTHING is some kind of a battle/fight with them. Not saying women are perfect, no, but still….just wonder….
I hope Greg & Karen don’t leave this arc unresolved. Less needs to leave “3rd grade friend” alone and find Tiff, and It’s up to her to straighten him out. I’m so impressed to see how Idiot is willing to take a bullet for Tiff yet he won’t declare himself to her. Puzzling! Less could find himself being the dessert for someone in jail if he doesnt slow down.Remember “Butcher Hicks” Less. “He’ll cancel you like a stamp.” Stop right now.
GnK- This is getting tedious. Even though Gunther is definitely wrong for saying things to Tiffany and pushing Les to this point, Les should have been let go of Gunther by now. I want this to be resolved but I also don’t want this to drag out for the next week. Please move on.
I doubt that Tiffany would care much at this point if Gunther got hit. She probably wanted to punch him too after he insulted her and talked so demeaningly to her. And Gunther is a big baby if he is using a woman to save him from Les. I’m surprised he didn’t mention his mommy.
Again It may be unpopular. Tiff, ditch both these guys. And by the way guys. Please only act this way if you (yelling and insulting other males) if you are certain they are , searching for proper word, can’t find one. Bottom line: These two guys are non typical of how most males interact.
Forget Tiffany, Gunther. Just tell Les that you guys aren’t in high school any more and if he lays a finger on you, you’ll call the police and have him booked for assault. You could do that already since he put his hands on you and clearly threatened you, but if he actually strikes you, that’ll just make it worse for him.
I’m new to this comic (hey, I can’t read them all) but I find it rather incredible that at 6:15 a.m. there are more than 5 times as many comments as likes (66 comments/12 likes).
If I was writing this strip, this Gunther and Les scene would end up in a big sloppy kiss when they mutually realize “its YOU I’ve wanted all along!”Problem solved. Fade to bean bag love.
@Some Commenters hereI disagree with the characterization of Gunther as a Nice Guy; as described here.
Just because he warns Tiffany about Leslie doesn’t mean he would do the same with say, Jack or Oxford. There’s no evidence in the strip to make that generalization. Gunther does have knowledge of Tiffany’s emotional vulnerability right now and perhaps feels a need to protect her from a perceived predator. (Remember that she told Les, not Gunther, that she’s given up the tussle with Ann re her father.) Only Greg and Karen know Gunther’s motivation (one assumes).
There are two solar systems in Luannverse right now. In the first Tiffany is “the sun.” Revolving around her are six planets. Gunther, Leslie, Al Grey, Irma Gray, Tom Farrell and Ann Eiffel. The other “sun” is Luann. Her solar system includes everyone else. The two systems interact with each other via “worm holes” known as Kafe Kablooie, Mooney Uni and Kids Space or Place or some such.
Maybe that’s why we see Tiffany’s world more. Fewer characters to juggle.
I know! Les finds out a rich uncle has died and he’s been cheated out all of his inheritance by Ane Eiffel, except for a brand new Corvette ZR-1 convertible. He convinces Gunther that all the Tiffany drama isn’t worth the effort, and the two of them take off in the ’Vette on an endless road trip to look for a vanishing America and find themselves in the bargain. Oh…wait…a minute … (cue Nelson Riddle TV theme music)
Oh goody, it looks like we’re in for a week of padding. Instead of having Les do something of actual consequence, we’re instead going to have a back-and-forth conversation that changes nothing and merely serves to fill time.
Yeah Greg, we know they hate each other. Either do something with it or move on.
Sadly, the arc did not change to something new today. Oh well. What strikes me about today?
1. Both Gunther and Les are acting true to form, IMO. They are BOTH exhibiting their “tried and true” personality traits from long ago…. Gunther prescribing what others should do in his “post-Peruvian” semi-surly manner…. Les being the thuggish bully from his entire life story.
2. The only ray of hope I see at the moment is that there might be a little bit of growth in both because a) Gunther has not cowered back and b) Les has not ( yet, anyhow ) actually hit Gunther. If Gunther stays focused and Les does not hit Gunther… that would be a modicum of growth for both kids (kids, being the operative word… they are both acting like idiots, IMO).
What we NEED is for both of these kids to actually recognize they are at least adult aged and that both damn well need to start thinking and behaving in a more adult fashion.
They both like Tiffany… IF (hopefully not) there is to be a relationship with either of those “kids” and Tiffany, it needs to develop more organically. This alpha/beta male posturing is tiresome to Tiffany…. and to us readers (at least to me).
I wonder if Mr Gray plotted all this out when he built that place. He knows what Les is like. He knows what Gunther is like. Maybe he realized they could be good for each other. They’re learning a lot from each other.
Gee. It amazes Me the number of “folks” that want this Arc to be over. Some of “Yosue Guys” must reeeeeeeally like Monster Truck Show stories, or been dying for another “Jonah dumps Shannon on Brad and Toni” Arc.
Actually I’m enjoying today’s Strip. For one VERY brief and shinning moment, Gunther has the upper hand. It ain’t gonna last though, because very soon, Les will figure out that Tiffany’s beef is with Gunther not “HIM.” And all he has to do is go over to Tiffany place right now and “apologize.” All night long. And there’s NOTHING Gunther could Do about it.
The BEST thing for the G-Man here is to take the moral high ground. Cut his loses, and Look Les right in the eye say: “Does Tiffany REALLY mean that much to You? Fine. I’ll step aside and no longer interfere.” Then let the chips fall where they may.
Then We can get back to Fay gushing over Axel, or Crystal finally dumping Knute, or TJ completely demolishing what’s left of the Horner House or Ann Eiffel being lead away in handcuffs after she got caught trying to sell Tom Farrell’s Lamborghini Urus to a Saudi Prince……,
I’m always amazed at how Greg Evans’ mind works…how he thinks of all this stuff! He comes up with the most clever and creative dialogue. He must be a really fun guy to hang around.
Uh, save who’s face? You insulted Tiff and Les. Apologize nicely and take responsibility rather than try and make this about you and your ego Gunther. Tiff is probably packing to leave Pittsville and get a real man right about now.
Yeah, Gunther sure is brave in standing up to Les. Except of course for the fact that he’s threatening to tattle on him to Tiffany. Les may be a weasel, but Gunther is clearly the rat.
‘NICE GUY’ is actually a sarcastic insult meant to belittle a guy who is favored by women. The ‘nice guy’ is usually good-looking, muscular, mustachioed, bearded, ..etc. Etc. Also, referring to the last line of your comment….imo….that was another comment meant to belittle …women…. ususally said by one guy to another when a single woman comes into view. It was disparaging….to say the least.
The 50’s, 60’s and 70’s were marred by such comments. They denoted the insecurity of the speaker. This was the same period as ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.’
Hmmm … This is getting interesting, in an unexpected way. There’s a pattern developing here.
Earlier in the evening Gunther acted like a jerk-ish boor to Tiff and misled her about what Les had said about the desert-date, enough to drive her away from the whole evening. He provoked Les into starting a fight, and here he’s thinking on his feet and threatening Les with blackmail (or whatever you want to call it).
Someone over-thinking the situation could infer that Les is having more of an influence on Gunther than the other way around/
An hyper-imaginative way-over-thinker could imagine a long-term story-line where the mysterious Mr. Gray threw these two together, not for Gunther’s supposed saintliness to rub off onto Les, but to groom Gunther to be Al’s assistant in nefarious doings after Les proved to be a simple-minded numskull.
Think about it. Gunther is not only brainy, but he has a mean temper and an uncontrollable urge to control the lives of people he’s interested in. Mr. Gray, with his long, shady past and his uncanny power over people, could very well see potential in Gunther as a ruthless crime lord and the nephew he never had. What other reason to build that bizarre “guesthouse” and stick the two of them in it?
Of course, nothing of the sort would happen in the “real” Luanniverse. The characters will just drift along, harping at each other on into the indefinite future. But it would be more gripping to see Gunth turn to the Dark Side and become the Godfather of Pittsville.
Personally I think Gunther can take Les in a fight. Les was the stereotypical school bully, more bark then bite. Not only did he slink away with his tail between his legs from Ox but he also backed down once from Knute when he tried to spy on Crystal in the rest room. Gunther, though a tad on the petulant side, is manlier then Les who is a wannabe tough guy at best.
This arc is not getting any better. I can only say good for Gunther not being intimidated by Les anymore. Otherwise, 2 idiots butting heads over a girl who has friend-zoned them and they are too busy fighting to notice it.

Something that has bothered me since last week: So called Nice Guy™.
You know, I have spent a lifetime trying to be as nice as I can to females, especially, and my wife particularly.
It disturbs me to think that Nice Guy is now yet another name for men who mistreat women.
Are all of us wrong?
Is it like the 1970s when some women said,

Blah, blah, blah. These Bad Boys are both all talk and no action these days.
And, they are boring.

There’s no way not to realize it—Gunther looks pathetic here, and offensive. “If you hit me, I’m gonna TELL on you! To, uh…Tiffany!”
