I thought it was originally about a man that was going to leave, then got switched in the later covers. Red Skelton and Betty Garrett sang it with the man being the one trying to leave in the forties, I think. Besides, it was celebrated in the 1970s as a feminist song for a woman defying conventions and maybe staying overnight with her boyfriend, and the heck with what the neighbors or her parents thought. She was an adult and chose her own way.
I think most of the people who are being accused of being offended know that the song is about snow… unless the singers have their right arms extended to greet the coming storm.
Well, “White Christmas” was written by a Jewish-American and it’s about commemorating the birth of history’s most famous Jew, so it wouldn’t seem like Nazi propaganda…
The song that should be banned is “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”. It emotionally extorts children and tells them they are being watched at all times. That is wrong and creepy.
It gets worse. Now they are complaining about Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer (there’s a great story behind the writer of that song) and about the movie A Christmas Story which is one of my family’s favorite.
By the same token, there is no war on Christmas. What’s wrong with saying Happy Holidays if you don’t know a person’s faith? If I know I say the appropriate greeting. No big deal!
White Christmas should be used as an example of typical American behavior. In the movie Dean Jagger buys a ski resort in Vermont, but it doesn’t snow, even by Christmas, and he spends most of the movie whining about his lack of luck in making a known risky investment. Then Bing Crosby sings WC and behold, it snows (Snow is white, for the PC crowd). Happy ending. And the White Christmas song? Written by Irving Berlin, a Jew. What could be more American?
For me, the song is strongly associated with soldiers in Europe during WW2, even if I was not alive at the time. They were fighting the Nazis. Thus Stephan’s point about Pig being called a Nazi is poignant.
Bah! Humbug! I’m a fire breathing radical and an atheist and my family celebrates Christmas, for the spiritual reasons not religious. Both sides are guilty of PC nonsense, words need to be taken in context.
Back in the day when the Catholic League had a grip on Boston entertainment they banned the song “I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus” because the woman was kissing a man who was not her husband. Even as a child that was not my interpretation of the song.
The same applies to the reaction to the Dorchester Historical Societies Christmas Card: "The historical society has said it is “truly sorry” for the phrasing of the card, which reads “We’re dreaming of a white Dorchester,” and described the fact that they missed its obvious racial connotation as an “unfortunate oversight.”
Musicologists have noted that The Drifters’ 1953 recording of “White Christmas” was done as “blackly” as possible to create comedic irony with the lyrics.
They’d also be offended he was singing too loudly, singing Christmas songs in general, and singing only Christmas songs without the inclusion of other religions/holidays.
