So. According to most “folks” here, they don’t like COFFEE, something many claimed they never even tried. Interesting. That’s explains a few things. But it’s cool, really. Each to His or Her own taste, I guess.
What’s disheartening is that our young herorine doesn’t like COFFEE. Tsk, Tsk, G&K, how could you? Or are We (Me) being sent a subtle “hint” of things to come?
“Luann hates COFFEE, but on the other both Tiffany and Gunther apparently LOVE COFFEE. Hmmmmmm, I wonder……., ;)
Bitterness without the sweets never works. Gotta add the sweets. But some take it straight like a jolt. Others like myself gotta have the sweets to make it all good.
I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was 40. My parents brewed it strong and drank it black, and I thought that was the way you were supposed to drink it. Almost 20 years later, I drink it black, too.
Ok, time for morning Joe – black and sweet. My Italian grandfather got me started 60+ years ago when he stayed at our home for a while – always brewed a pot of espresso first thing in the morning and gave me a Demi cup, black and sweet – delicious!
No, Frank. Liking a cuppa coffee in the morning IS NOT a sign that Luann is an adult. When she has a full time job, and, starts paying her own bills, THEN she’s an adult. (Moving out to a place of her own, would be an extra added welcome step.)
For a long list of examples of bad coffee in fiction, and an extensive discussion of what makes coffee bad or… less bad, see https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadToTheLastDrop
Are the Sunday strips set in the era when Luann was about 15? Granted, everyone in the weekday college strips acts as if they were still in the 10th grade, but at least they maintain the pretense of being about college students. The Sunday strips don’t seem even to have that same setting.
Nothing wrong with not liking coffee. But bragging to her father about how grown-up she is now? The Evans won’t let their characters age out of junior high.
I stopped drinking coffee in the mid 80’s when I realized that I was drinking it because it seemed to be expected. I don’t like the taste of coffee at all. How can anything smell so good and taste so bad. I’m with Luann on this one.
Wow! I’ve been drinking coffee since I was four— on Sundays, with sugar and cream. Quit the cream when I was 16. Tried to quit the sugar once, no joy. Really. NO joy. Agave works tho, not that I approach 70.
I was like that for years. Couldn’t stand the taste of the stuff. But when Keurig introduced those pod machines, I bought one (at the much missed Elder Beerman Department Store), indulged in a few of those designer flavors, and now I wouldn’t be without it! The Ink Spots knew of which they sang when they recorded Java Jive.
First coffee stories are fun. When I was growing up my dad drank coffee with cream and 1 sugar, and mom drank tea, black. They always made both. I thought coffee tasted and smelled terrible, but like to drink tea, black like my mom. Then at age 16 I was working in a restaurant and it was my job to make the coffee in a big urn. I used to take a cup to the chef (an older lady, extremely crotchety with a heart of gold) to test it, and she’d tell me when it was good enough. It wasn’t a requirement, I just couldn’t taste it myself. Well, one day she was in such a bad mood I didn’t want to bother her. And the scent of brewing coffee had started to grow on me. So I fixed a cup just like for my dad, one cream, one sugar, and tried it. I was shocked that I liked it very much. Later, in the fall, I was a senior in high school and asked my dad if he minded making enough coffee in the morning so that I could have a cup. He responded just like Luann’s dad. It was kind of sweet. I really enjoyed being a coffee drinker from that point on. The comfort of it got me through some tough times almost immediately.
I have to chime in and say I love coffee—strong and black! My Appalachian grandparents fed it to me with a spoon when I was a baby! But these days I can’t handle all that caffeine so it’s strictly decafe for me. : (
Tomorrow, building code violation fun with Brad and Toni and TJ! (And with Frank and Nancy, who are legally responsible for the house that’s in violation!)
I used to drink coffee with lots of cream and sugar. A friend told me that if I drank it black for a week, I’d never go back to cream and sugar. In fact, it took me only a day or two. Now I drink Starbucks dark roast, like Komodo Dragon. Coffee flavored anything is great. Espresso is still a bit beyond me. Maybe I should try it with sugar and cream. The caffeine doesn’t keep me awake, but I’ll get a little hand tremor that tells me, “Enough coffee, kiddo”.
Not a coffee drinker. Way too bitter and gives me heartburn. The only coffee I use is a wee bit of espresso powder in my baking when making brownies, chocolate cake, cookies, etc. Really brings out the chocolate flavor.
Lol, I love coffee but I hate withdrawal so I don’t drink it too often. To drink it though I add sugar and if I have, creamer. My fav kind of coffee is caramel and french vanilla. You can never go wrong with flavored coffee. As for black…yeah…never tried it, and I never will. That’s a coffee that I can NOT tolerate.
Maybe in the end it speaks more of Frank’s coffee making ability than anything else. Perhaps she’s more used to what they serve out at specialty shops, and her Dad’s stuff tastes like swill in comparison.
Home coffee is yucky. For some reason, the store – made coffee tastes better. It could be because they brew all day long and keep the temperature set at hot. It is the same way how ranch dressing always tastes better in restaurants than they do out of containers from grocery stores. There are mysterious and unlisted ingredients in some foods
