Look at the last two panels, she touches him and looks him sweetly in the eyes, then the last panel, standing together having a new stage where they announce to the world, and the 219 followers, that they are gf/bf and they like fun. Assuming the social media do not attract them more than they attract boring people like me, Gunther and Bets have 15 convicted felons, 8 bipolar sufferers, 8 people with clinical rage disorder, 15 alcoholics, 3 borderline personality disorder sufferers, 8 psychopaths, and two schizophrenics looking at the pictures Bets just posted.
The influence of social media is so harmful and leads to insecurity. I see too many of my friends get caught up in comparing their appearance and life to others, and they invest all their time in trying to measure up. Even though I’m still a teenager, I’m not much of a fan. I’d prefer this Luann comment section to social media any day :)
Like I said yesterday, Gunther is just a prop. All Bets wants to be is to be a girlfriend just to post pictures with her boyfriend and be the envy of all other girls – who the boyfriend is doesn’t matter much to her. No wonder she shouted “His girlfriend!” when Tiffany was at the door because she felt insecure about her thinking she was a super model. I believe Bets is so insecure she feels she has to compete with others through social media.
How can this arc be saved? Well, Panel #4 can be a saucy “Let’s Give ’em Something to Talk About” (Bonnie Raitt) moment. Gunther seems OK with taking that photo, and at least Bets is being clear about her intentions. That part=good. The other serious issues about consent, and photos that might be misused… Bets can say “I’m sorry, Gunther. I should have asked, and talked to you first about the Instagram page. I can see now that it’s not about just ME and what I want to do. It’s US now. So, let’s go through the pics I uploaded, and you tell me what you’re comfortable with sharing. The ones you don’t wanna share with the world, I’ll delete. And, since you don’t know our followers, let’s get together with them this/next weekend and I’ll introduce you.”
I’m thinking that in the long run, Bets and Gunther could be good for each other. Bets can (gently) get Gunther out of his shell, get him to meet new people, have new experiences and open up his closed world that had revolved around Mommy or his grade-school circle of “friends”, and learn about the importance of being attentive to his date/partner/gf instead of immediately answering phone calls or reading texts and blowing her off (which was rude).
Being with Gunther could get Bets out of the “me me me” mode where she impulsively does what SHE wants about things that involve them as a couple. She might even learn that, in a relationship, they need to actually communicate, and Gunther should have a say in what they do. She can gradually get him to open up, with enough coaxing and prodding and maybe someday he will be OK with posting pics of them together. But he needs to be part of that decision.
Could be a good learning experience for both of them. And we all know that 1967 song by Aretha Franklin that goes… R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me!

In fact, she’s been running it before she even asked him if they were officially a couple.
Two horrifying plot developments, both worthy of a whole lot of follow-up. And yet, both have just been dumped off to the side like yesterday’s garbage, most likely never to be given the focus they seriously need. This strip’s low-stakes stories wouldn’t be so frustrating if they didn’t keep teasing us with glimpses of what could be done if the writers actually cared enough to follow through with the concepts they introduced. Seriously, why bring this stuff up at all if it’s just gonna get abandoned two days later?!?
But don’t worry, readers: on Monday we’ll be able to see the campers return from their trip! Oh how fun it will be to see them discuss the wild times they had, rather than get to experience those wild times along with them! /s

Well crisis averted. He seems happy to be part of a couple even when it comes to sharing an embarrassing photo with strangers. So, okay. But I’m totally uncomfortable with Bets’ philosophy of Let’s make everyone jealous! Whether online or off that isn’t why you are in a relationship. But for far too many people it’s the all important factor. I think it’s just a sign of the times. Not for me though.
I call Bets and Gunther sort of like something I have been trying to apply this Chicago Bear inspiration with. Our former quarterback, Jay Cutler, was, to my way of thinking, talented, but a big kid actually. He pouted, and withdrew when he had bad games, and in Chicago, with our rabid fans that is not a good thing to do. He met and eventually married a local girl, Kristin Cavellari. She worked and hustled her way to a lower level, but successful career in reality TV, and had done modeling, etc., etc. Why do I bring it up here? She was and is very protective of her big kid. I remember after a particularly unsatisfyng set of games, when they took a short trip to Las Vegas if I remember, and the news cameras were following him like wolves. They were walking into the frame, and Jay had his cap down over his head as if to hide his face. Kristin? She was in front of him, warding off the reporters and cameras like a line backer, and she is not a big woman, just fierce. Watch out for Chicago girls, they can be pretty fierce if pushed. That is Bets, fierce, protective of her big kid. She is a bit pushy true, but that is exactly what Gunther needs. And one more thing, if Gunther lets her know he does not want something, she will stop it. She won’t lead him to HER dream, like Rosa, and tell him that the dream is more important than him. This is my projection, and I am sticking with it.
Well, will you just look at Gunther (I mean Gun, his new manly moniker) with his arm around Bets’ waist! Next he’ll be eyeing first base. . . I say good for you, Gun.
you guys are being too uptight. Gunther is a sweet guy that deserves a real chance to experience his first “first”. I wasn’t a fan of Bets at first, she was too suspicious of every little thing; but they have too many cool things in common for that to be too much of a red flag as they get to know each other better. He’s in college, no one says that he has to pop the question prematurely, but at least he is finally getting a chance to kiss a frogette (is that a word??) and they are doing lots of normal couple things. Besides everybody is posting pics of EVERYTHING nowadays. Permission or not, it’s what they do. They NEVER know the people that are “liking” their stuff or following them from Adam; Especially if they are “in a relationship with”. I am not a social media-er (it’s not my thing); but this is only a strip and it’s kind of showing real life.
This coming Thursday I’d like to see a single frame cartoon that shows Bets and Gun in the night snuggled up against a tree watching fireworks. The caption could be “ Happy Fourth of July!”

Surprised he was so quick to go along with an Instagram he didn’t know about, but the positive interpretation of that is that he trusts Bets to not post something problematic.
He still needs to have a “set boundaries” conversation about social media, but maybe Knute has rubbed off on him a little after all as regards perspective. Seems like a good step for Gun in developing a real relationship.
I JUST FLASHED IT…I can see a few arcs emerging, but will lead with a tempting question, first.
Where is there intersectionality, in terms of a common interest between Bets, Gun and Tiff? That’s right; a return engagement of Tiff as Eye of Zye. She will face pressure to get the figure back; enter a workout arc with Jack as trainer, creating some nice tension with the Lu-Jack romantic possibilities arc; classic Luann the Strip, right there, going all the way back to Aaron Hill. Naturally, when Tiff returns to glory, and helps Gun’s fashion design career get off the ground, in the process, Gun may begin to feel torn. After all, Tiff has always been the hottie in his world, and there was perhaps a little history, already. What about Tom & Ann in this whole mix? Simone of Souffle? Too many angles to consider.
With regard to my death by texting and driving foreshadow, yesterday, I think that I have just argued against the death being Gunther, Bets, Jack or Tiff. Who does that leave? Jonah, after he has dropped Shannon off at Brad & Toni’s. Jonah may finally have reached that point where his utility is sufficiently minimal, making him expendable.
I LIKE Bets. I think she’s the best thing to ever happen to Gunther. She likes him FOR him. That’s hard to find these days. Even harder for a guy like Gunther.
I just wanted to say…. how much I enjoy this board, and the discussions people have here! People don’t always agree, people debate, discuss how they really feel about characters, or story arcs, talk about what they like, what they don’t like, whether this character’s actions were wrong, right, well-intentioned but ultimately damaging, whether this character or that character is hopeless, or can be redeemed and why.
I admire the passion and variety of the opinions expressed here. People that say “It’s just FICTION, don’t get worked up about that” don’t seem to get that great stories, great characters mean something to people. Some stories have lasted thousands of years and are still inspiration for new material being written/drawn by modern writers/artists. Why should people NOT talk about something that strikes a chord in them? There is endless talk about Star Wars, Super heroes, Game of Thrones, etc. People are passionate about the topic and a lot of times, discussion opens up new insights for others.
In contrast, I belong to a certain retro comics discussion group on FB. Joined them a year and a half ago, hoping for some in-depth discussion about these comics, the artwork, the stories, the characters. But, people there are just so twee. I tried to stir up some discussions about the stories, and I sensed that my posts were not terribly popular there. Others who might venture a critical opinion about something in the comics get shut down. So now, there is little in actual, thoughtful posts where someone actually ventures an opinion. All it is is a cover gallery, where people post covers of their collection and everyone else coos about how wonderful it is. This Luann board gets more posts in one day than they get in one month. And it’s very clear why.

Now, I may be an old fogey, and totally behind the times, but really…isn’t that just a little weird? I’m totally on the fence about Bets. We’ve all been on Gun’s case about not being able to handle lingerie, but maybe we should be taking a closer look at Bets. She’s attractive enough to have any guy she wants, so what does she want with Gunther? He’s not the type to jump in the sack at the first opportunity. Maybe that’s the attraction. Maybe she feels safe with him, having had bad experiences in the past. Okay, I admit to a certain ambivalence. Is Bets going to be good for Gunther or not? The jury is still out.

Now if Les does walk in, he won’t be “in the know” and he’ll make inappropriate and embarrassing comments trying to press gunther to “pull the trigger.” But gunther is more interested in the task at hand rather than romance or anything sexual. Bets will have to make the first move to initiate romance and/or sex…cause gunther won’t, he’s just way too shy.
Now help refresh my memory, peeps. Gunther went to Peru with Rosa. Eventually, he realized that what she was doing was not his thing, plus he needed to rush home to save Mommy from the evil clutches of Mr. Gray. When he came back, he changed his look, wearing a 5 o’clock shadow/George Michael beard and wearing different clothing. He also had a personality change, becoming surly and argumentative. And a mean streak and very nasty temper came out.
Now he’s back to being rather passive, and letting his friends interfere/walk over him, and he barely squeaked out an objection to Bets sharing personal photos online, while she shushes him, presents a pitiful straw man defense (with false equivalency) and quickly changes the subject. What happened? He shaved, of course. Was the beard the thing that was driving his personality change? Did he calm down once he accepted that Mr. Gray was gonna marry Mommy? Or is this reversion to type?
Wow. Sometimes I think the comments are more interesting than the strip. Posting on Instagram is what a lot of people do. Ditto to Snapchat. It’s how social media works!

But I’m totally uncomfortable with Bets’ philosophy of Let’s make everyone jealous! Whether online or off that isn’t why you are in a relationship. But for far too many people it’s the all important factor. I think it’s just a sign of the times. Not for me though.

I call Bets and Gunther sort of like something I have been trying to apply this Chicago Bear inspiration with. Our former quarterback, Jay Cutler, was, to my way of thinking, talented, but a big kid actually. He pouted, and withdrew when he had bad games, and in Chicago, with our rabid fans that is not a good thing to do. He met and eventually married a local girl, Kristin Cavellari. She worked and hustled her way to a lower level, but successful career in reality TV, and had done modeling, etc., etc. Why do I bring it up here? She was and is very protective of her big kid. I remember after a particularly unsatisfyng set of games, when they took a short trip to Las Vegas if I remember, and the news cameras were following him like wolves. They were walking into the frame, and Jay had his cap down over his head as if to hide his face. Kristin? She was in front of him, warding off the reporters and cameras like a line backer, and she is not a big woman, just fierce. Watch out for Chicago girls, they can be pretty fierce if pushed. That is Bets, fierce, protective of her big kid. She is a bit pushy true, but that is exactly what Gunther needs. And one more thing, if Gunther lets her know he does not want something, she will stop it. She won’t lead him to HER dream, like Rosa, and tell him that the dream is more important than him. This is my projection, and I am sticking with it.

I’m glad this week is over and I hope we are done with Gunther. My guess for next week is Tara, Jack, Luann situations. They are always fun and light.

you guys are being too uptight. Gunther is a sweet guy that deserves a real chance to experience his first “first”. I wasn’t a fan of Bets at first, she was too suspicious of every little thing; but they have too many cool things in common for that to be too much of a red flag as they get to know each other better. He’s in college, no one says that he has to pop the question prematurely, but at least he is finally getting a chance to kiss a frogette (is that a word??) and they are doing lots of normal couple things. Besides everybody is posting pics of EVERYTHING nowadays. Permission or not, it’s what they do. They NEVER know the people that are “liking” their stuff or following them from Adam; Especially if they are “in a relationship with”. I am not a social media-er (it’s not my thing); but this is only a strip and it’s kind of showing real life.

So Gunther does know current social media mores and is ok with them, and also knows a picture of him visibly standing behind a mannequin, even in underwear, is harmless. L
Surprised he was so quick to go along with an Instagram he didn’t know about, but the positive interpretation of that is that he trusts Bets to not post something problematic.
He still needs to have a “set boundaries” conversation about social media, but maybe Knute has rubbed off on him a little after all as regards perspective. Seems like a good step for Gun in developing a real relationship.

I JUST FLASHED IT…I can see a few arcs emerging, but will lead with a tempting question, first.
Where is there intersectionality, in terms of a common interest between Bets, Gun and Tiff? That’s right; a return engagement of Tiff as Eye of Zye. She will face pressure to get the figure back; enter a workout arc with Jack as trainer, creating some nice tension with the Lu-Jack romantic possibilities arc; classic Luann the Strip, right there, going all the way back to Aaron Hill. Naturally, when Tiff returns to glory, and helps Gun’s fashion design career get off the ground, in the process, Gun may begin to feel torn. After all, Tiff has always been the hottie in his world, and there was perhaps a little history, already. What about Tom & Ann in this whole mix? Simone of Souffle? Too many angles to consider.
With regard to my death by texting and driving foreshadow, yesterday, I think that I have just argued against the death being Gunther, Bets, Jack or Tiff. Who does that leave? Jonah, after he has dropped Shannon off at Brad & Toni’s. Jonah may finally have reached that point where his utility is sufficiently minimal, making him expendable.
It’s as neat as the proverbial pin.

I just wanted to say…. how much I enjoy this board, and the discussions people have here! People don’t always agree, people debate, discuss how they really feel about characters, or story arcs, talk about what they like, what they don’t like, whether this character’s actions were wrong, right, well-intentioned but ultimately damaging, whether this character or that character is hopeless, or can be redeemed and why.
I admire the passion and variety of the opinions expressed here. People that say “It’s just FICTION, don’t get worked up about that” don’t seem to get that great stories, great characters mean something to people. Some stories have lasted thousands of years and are still inspiration for new material being written/drawn by modern writers/artists. Why should people NOT talk about something that strikes a chord in them? There is endless talk about Star Wars, Super heroes, Game of Thrones, etc. People are passionate about the topic and a lot of times, discussion opens up new insights for others.
In contrast, I belong to a certain retro comics discussion group on FB. Joined them a year and a half ago, hoping for some in-depth discussion about these comics, the artwork, the stories, the characters. But, people there are just so twee. I tried to stir up some discussions about the stories, and I sensed that my posts were not terribly popular there. Others who might venture a critical opinion about something in the comics get shut down. So now, there is little in actual, thoughtful posts where someone actually ventures an opinion. All it is is a cover gallery, where people post covers of their collection and everyone else coos about how wonderful it is. This Luann board gets more posts in one day than they get in one month. And it’s very clear why.

Hold your darn horses. Bets has been taking photos and posting them on Instagram without Gunther’s knowledge or consent? Now, I may be an old fogey, and totally behind the times, but really…isn’t that just a little weird? I’m totally on the fence about Bets. We’ve all been on Gun’s case about not being able to handle lingerie, but maybe we should be taking a closer look at Bets. She’s attractive enough to have any guy she wants, so what does she want with Gunther? He’s not the type to jump in the sack at the first opportunity. Maybe that’s the attraction. Maybe she feels safe with him, having had bad experiences in the past. Okay, I admit to a certain ambivalence. Is Bets going to be good for Gunther or not? The jury is still out.

Now if Les does walk in, he won’t be “in the know” and he’ll make inappropriate and embarrassing comments trying to press gunther to “pull the trigger.” But gunther is more interested in the task at hand rather than romance or anything sexual. Bets will have to make the first move to initiate romance and/or sex…cause gunther won’t, he’s just way too shy.

Now help refresh my memory, peeps. Gunther went to Peru with Rosa. Eventually, he realized that what she was doing was not his thing, plus he needed to rush home to save Mommy from the evil clutches of Mr. Gray. When he came back, he changed his look, wearing a 5 o’clock shadow/George Michael beard and wearing different clothing. He also had a personality change, becoming surly and argumentative. And a mean streak and very nasty temper came out.
Now he’s back to being rather passive, and letting his friends interfere/walk over him, and he barely squeaked out an objection to Bets sharing personal photos online, while she shushes him, presents a pitiful straw man defense (with false equivalency) and quickly changes the subject. What happened? He shaved, of course. Was the beard the thing that was driving his personality change? Did he calm down once he accepted that Mr. Gray was gonna marry Mommy? Or is this reversion to type?
