Greetings from the city that just removed the name “Red Line” from their transit system because it reminded people too much of red lining minorities out of certain communities.
The Lancaster Pa. paper had a story this past week about a protest at F&M college. It seems several people wore costumes to Halloween parties. The other students are wildly indignant over “cultural appropriation,” enough so to shut down a basketball game and have a big assembly outside to protest earlier in the day. First, what the heck is “cultural appropriation”? What I saw were three photos printed in the paper, two of them hard to guess what was going on and one that showed two guys wearing sombreros and holding guitars. Can no one wear costumes at Halloween parties anymore? Are we losing our collective minds?

Mobs are evil. Especially mobs that encourage individuals to do things that they wouldn’t dare do on their own and do so anonymously.

A young boy named Jojo, restless on the farm
A boy filled with wanderlust, who never really meant no harm
He changed his clothes and he shined his boots
And he combed his dark hair down
But his mama cried as he walked out:
’Don’t take your devices to town
Don’t take your devices to town
Don’t take your devices… to town’

Remember the kid who was vilified because – not wanting to do the wrong thing – stood still and did and said nothing at all.

Alexis de Tocqueville warned of this in On Democracy. The majority is not reasonable necessarily.

That’ll happen no matter where you are! The safest thing is to keep your mouth shut and sit on your hands!
