Rat’s bottom left commentary is precisely how it should be.
Around here, we have meta-offendedistas: They get offended on behalf of other people (who are, in fact, often not offended by whatever the mof-distas think they should be).
God, I really love Pearls, but I wish Pastis would just stop with these repetitive “i’m offended!!” or “political correctness” jokes he does like every other week now. It’s boring and unfunny. I read stuff like Pearls to laugh at the edge and wit it has, not to be reminded about how life sucks and our social climate right now. It’s not entertaining at the slightest. Would suck if these past few years means that Pearls has gone soft and Pastis has finally been stumped with ideas (like what happened to all of those creative storylines he did from the beginning of the 2000s to the mid-2010s??)
Social Awareness, like most things: Behind every silver lining there’s a dark cloud. Bless the nouveau book burners of the original unabridged Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a novel by Mark Twain, they know not what they do.
Pastis harps on this issue so much (and from the point of view of the offender) I am really, really wondering about the opinions he expresses that cause this response.
General, personal self-restraint is the key to freedom. Love God. Do right by your neighbor. Exercise too much freedom, presuming on others, and you create push-back. When everyone selfishly takes, no one has much freedom.
I really like Pastis. Obviously very fed up with the stupidity of both conservatives and liberals. And he isn’t afraid to risk alienating one side or the other by calling them on their stupidity.
At first glance I thought maybe the Fantastic Four were doing a guest turn in PBS. Then I read about the Offendedistas and said to myself, “T.S., Eliot”!

Rat, are you trying to punish the guy or the general public by letting him wear tights?

Has Stephen been facing a lot of offended comments lately, more than the average cartoonist?

Notice how the guy’s finger presses into Pig’s squishy head in panel 4? It’s a good thing there’s nothing in there to damage.

“Leaving creative people free to create”. Yes, but as long as they don’t start shoving propaganda down our throats, Rat.

As long as you’re not belittling people, that’s okay. Belittling anyone affects pretty much everyone.

Wow, for once, Rat has it figured out! If it doesn’t hurt someone deliberately, do what you like, and SCREW anyone who doesn’t like it.

That’s right, Rat! These days, people just use being offensive to complain about things they don’t like.
