Here’s a comic strip that would have been appropriate before 1962 when Crayola changed “flesh” to “peach”. Unless…this is a way of promoting Crayola’s Colors of the World packs that feature 24 colors for the global skin tones of the world, which made their debut recently at the UN World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
Even before reading the comments I had to google flesh" because I was pretty sure that did not use that name any more. Google says not since 1962. Shannon must be using Frank’s old box of crayons. Except that is today is 2020 and Luann is 20 then she was born in 2000 and Frank would have been no than 3- at the time so he would have been born in 1970 -after flesh was renamed peach.
Bwad, you fool, you’re SO out of touch! Yes, those Crayola crayons are now named Peach and have been since long before you were born. (And Indian Red is called Chestnut now, btw.) Actually, I reckon it’s the writer who’s out of touch. This strip would’ve made more sense if it were about bandages.
I’ve read the comments and a lot of you say it was changed to peach in the 60s. But I was born in the late 80s and I had “flesh” in my box. Before posting I asked my husband and he also said he got it in his big box. I remember having it though I can’t remember if it was from Crayola. It could have been another brand. Like Shannon I asked an adult about it and got a similar answer.
This is so yesterday’s controversy! As noted by almost everyone above, Crayola dropped the “flesh” name long ago, changing it to “peach.” Shannon is still only six years old and shows only occasional, inconsistent signs of growth. Brad should have known a bit more than he seemingly does.
But it’s always good to see Toni. —Except that she is like the doctor’s hypodermic, which is not such fun to see. She gives the needle to Brad….
Even when I was of coloring age, I thought “flesh” didn’t look like MY skin color. Hated it. I never colored in the faces of people and left them the color of paper. More cartoony and more acceptable to me.
Actually Shannon is right. There is no such thing as “flesh color”.In grade three, my daughter made a friend with a girl from Jamaica. Other kids teased her saying she was different because of her skin color. My daughter said “close your eyes and tell me how she is different.” They couldn’t. Later a boy in grade five bullied her so my daughter beat him up. He could not show his face in school. A GIRL two years younger than him beat him up. The girl from Jamaica had no problems as long as she was with my daughter.
I think one of the odd things about this comic is that little kids often don’t notice shin color. They tend to notice what the other kids can do rather than skin color. As Jesus said, they will know us by our deeds. Perhaps, too, this is what he meant by saying that children were such like the kingdom of heaven.
Brad and Toni have effectively been neutralized into a younger Frank and Nancy. Marriage has deflated romance. Too bad. Brad was always a dud, but once upon a time Toni was a sexy adventure.
So we’re back to “Bwad” this morning. I guess GnK think they have to portray Shannon as being younger and more innocent than she has been in recent strips.
More interestingly, “Bwad’s” confusion typifies the “grown up” angst of those seeking to appear “woke.” (BTW Urban Dictionary defines “woke” as being aware, and “knowing what’s going on in the community.” The new word for “hep;” alternate spelling of “hip.”)
But I don’t see a tie-in to the Labor Day holiday as some other strips have done.
On the flip side of things, some plastic model paint manufacturers still use the word flesh to describe their paints. Testors uses the word Cream. There are also flesh paint kits available that range from cream to tans to browns.
I worked in a high school that was about 60% black students. Whenever a band aid was needed, the pink band aides always stood out like a neon light on them. I’ve often said to myself someone will make a million dollars if they sold band aids in more appropriate, black to brown colors. If these are on the market, they aren’t for sale around here.
Blithering about “Flesh” colored crayons last made in 1962? Way to beat a dead horse, Greg.
Especially now that Crayola has come out with Skin Tones of the World https://shop.crayola.com/color-and-draw/crayons/colors-of-the-world-skin-tone-crayons-24-count-5201080000.html
I guess being woke doesn’t mean that you have to pay attention.
I was in hobby store one time and a customer loudly asked if the store had any “human flesh.” Everyone turned and looked at him and he said “Paint! I mean paint!”
I’m just glad to see that the subject is mentioned and delighted that it is a good one! There is not enough “names” for colors of skin anyway. And why does there even need to be??
Band-Aids are now being sold in assorted flesh tone colors as for myself; I still plan on using the colorful kid themed Band-Aids….after all I’m still a kid at heart! ;^)
FWIW: This was a nice Brad strip. He told Shannon the name of the color (without looking at the label) as he’d been taught to call that color. She challenged him on it and he agreed she was right. In the future, he won’t call that color “flesh” because Shannon doesn’t; hence his comment about ‘uncoloring.’
I believe it is now called apricot or peach. There is a funny youtube sketch done by Studio C that is all about crayons and their colors… Hillarious! Here’s the link if anyone wants to watch it. So funny! :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VH8lvZ-Z1g
This is a big issue in the makeup world as well. And for good reason-like many birds and fish, we come in different shades which is wonderful except we have decided to make value judgments on people based on those shades.

Was the term, “politically correct” one of the items in Pandora’s Box"? When and how did it start? Is it something you are and I’m not? Or is it something I am and you’re not? Is there a judge, or do we just have a voice vote?
Not to make a joke about it, but that brings back memories…I never thought “flesh” looked all that…fleshy, though. Still, I love the subtle way they placed anti-racism in here.
ahh the next banded crayon color getting rid of indian red was bad enough even though it was only a reference to the color of clay in india i know i know somebody who wasnt an american indian an india indian got offended. what next??? tearing down the statue of the inventor of crayons
In the later 1950s, comic books often depicted(?) blacks as NON-EXISTENT; it probably was better than how blacks were depicted in etertainment like “Amos ‘n’ Andy”.

This is precisely why Crayola stopped using “flesh” to describe a single color. That must be an off-brand box.

You know, for a six year old kid ( or however old she is), that is a pretty sharp observation…

And Shannon is one of the best characters in the strip.

Flesh color was introduced in 1949 but renamed it flesh tent and pink beige before finally settling on peach as it known today.
