I think it is harder with well-established friends. When I was a child we moved every year or two; knowing I would probably not see friends again was hard. My wife was an Army Brat… same thing. Ah, look at all the lonely people.
I had to wait until I was 16. She was a tour guide at Wonder Cave, Monteagle, Tennessee. My dad teased me that I didn’t even get her name so when we got back from vacation I wrote a letter addressed to “The Young Female Guide,” and addressed to the cave. We became pen pals for two years. I did get to see her again the summer after high school.
And so ends a minor dust up for Gene Day. Was Gene’s hair Arlo blonde? Or Janis Brown? This occurred in the era when all strips were colorized. Here we see the definitive answer since yesterday Jimmy J himself said he colored these old b/w strips. In 2003 and 2004 it was blonde.
A bit of trivia: Gene’s hair reverted to “paleo-black” in a home video from the beach on March 25th, 2003. Also depicted is Janis’ in a yellows bikini. Arlo’s often missed and pined for yellow bikini. 8^ )

While I enjoy the throwback I wish all weren’t just ones from the book.

This was me on a family trip back in 1958 or so. Met the young beauty three days before dad had to go back home to his job.

It’s about time we got to see Gene & Mary Lou again. Too bad it’s just a time warp.

The old moving away thing ruined a lot of romances. Teenage girls sure used to move around a lot. Or at least their father’s jobs did.

Very familiar scene for me as well. Panama City Beach, Fl around 1962/63. Her name was Stephanie. Never saw her after that week.

The question is, what city does Gene live in, and how far away does Mary Lou live?
