Poor frightened Bea! You know it’s really serious when placid, jovial Tommy starts flipping out! If only they would let one of the cats out and follow them!
I want to mention at this point that this story is partly based on something that really happened in our neighborhood late last year. For a couple of nights our cats and our neighbor’s cat were yowling and pawing at the windows at night! My neighbor Kari texted me to make sure all of our cats were inside, and I had just been about to text her to make sure her cat Jack was safe indoors. —It turned out that another neighbor’s cat Lily was stuck high, high in a tree! Thankfully, Lily is safe and sound now (I may explain the rest of the story after this arc!) It was quite strange when it was happening!
The cats need to do the “run out of reach, stop and look back until you have to run again” that my cats do when they want me to do something for them!! It’s really pretty adorable and very effective. It is how Nushi makes sure I stay on track to feed them (I get dis…..SHINY) and it’s how Kira let’s me know she wants me to put on her harness and let her explore the backyard. She even stops where I prefer to put her harness on and waits till I say “okay”. My smart girls!!!
My cats now don’t go outside unless they are with me and/or on a harness. They have their catio which they love (and are mad they can’t access right now due to the smoke). Hopefully the air quality will improve tomorrow so I can let them out.
Even back when I was young and most cats were indoor/outdoor my family had a “in at night” policy, a policy I’ve always followed. The trick was to bring them in and feed them right before it was time to go to sleep and then their full tummies made them want to sleep anyway. If someone didn’t come in we went looking. If not found someone (ok, usually my Mom) would check several times during the night and a full scale search would start in the morning if they hadn’t shown up. Luckily this only happened a couple of times and we always found them. Though twice it was a couple of weeks and once almost a year, but those are stories for another day.
The tiniest yewwwwwl! I know this sound and it hurts my heart. It means something is very wrong and I haven’t been smart enough to figure it out. Come on, People!
National Coloring Day —It’s not just for kids, anymore, thankfully. One of my favorite things to do as a child were the color or paint by the numbers pictures. I used colored pencils, did mostly landscapes, and thinking back on it, it was stress relieving. The finished product was pleasant to look upon, even if it wasn’t “art.” Then, some time in the ’60s or so, “adult” coloring books came into fashion. These days, my “coloring” is mostly done with an airbrush, on scale models … Hey! Who broke my purple crayon!
Eat a Hoagie Day —There are a number of theories about how this name for a submarine sandwich came about. Personally, I think it’s a mispronunciation of “hogy,” as in, “What a hog!” said of someone who eats that much. Alternatively, it may be called after a possible creator named “Hoag,” which I find more plausible, as both are spelled and pronounced the same way, with a long, hard “o” sound for the diphthong. Now I want one.
National Cream-filled Donut Day —for dessert, of course. I learned early on to find the fill-hole and start eating there, otherwise the filling winds up everywhere (giving one to a baby in a high chair is always fun.) One can argue that these are not true donuts, because they are not ring-shaped. Now making them ring-shaped is just plain silly. If you fill the hole of a regular, ring-shaped donut, where does the filling wind up? In your lap. So if you enclose the hole, problem solved. Ain’t engineering wonderful? Personally, I prefer eclairs, as being more structurally sound … also bigger.
Gobstopper Day —Otherwise known as jawbreakers, especially if you mistake one for an oversized gumball. Even if you don’t, these are “dentist’s delights,” being nothing but colored, flavored sugar (and fine slingshot ammo.) They were “popular” between the world wars, supposedly with children, but probably more with parents who wanted the children to be quiet (hence gob (British slang for mouth) stopper. Okay, I’ll shut up, now.
OT: Reclaiming my living room floor! Since my central a/c broke early in the summer & maintenance put a window unit in my living room, I’ve been living in this one room, including having half the floor space taken up by my mattress. The local weather guessers say it’s supposed to be in the 70s all week with cool nights, so I put the mattress back on the bed where it belongs.
I hadn’t realized how depressing it was to be stuck in one room (as if months of COVID “house arrest” weren’t already bad enough!). I feel like I can breathe again. YAY!
Georgia posted a pic on Instagram yesterday of “best frenemies” Lupin & Elvis getting cozy. And speaking of frenemies: Lupin rescued Goldie the other night!
I’m a little confused in the last panel. Is the yewwwwwl coming from Sophie or is it and the yowwwwl both Tommy? I mean Tommy’s Woman’s comment about Tommy flipping out sounds like both oughta be coming from Tommy. But the yewwwwwl is so small and at Sophie that I wanna say she’s trying to yowl too and just can’t get it out.
Just want to send an extra hug out to piwismom, hope you are getting some relief from pain. And will be sending a virtual “hand holding” for you when you see the doctor in a couple of days.
I know that everything in the big pink house gets a happy ending, but I am so so so worried about Beatrix! Help us, Georgia Dunn, you’re our only hope!

I’m sort of surprised, given Elvis’ usual reaction to strange cats, that The Man isn’t out right now looking to see if there’s a new cat in the area.

Every cat’s awake and every move we make
Every howl we break, every step we take, we are telling you
Every single day heed every meow we say
Every show of dismay, every night we don’t play, we are telling you
Oh, can’t you see, Bea’s up a tree
How our poor hearts ache for that little cat’s sake
Every nap we forsake, and every yowl we make
Every pane we shake, every eardrum we break, we are telling you
(Gordon Sumner – Every Breath You Take)

We had a “cat stuck in a tree” make local news last winter.
https://www.wbir.com/article/news/local/neighbors-pleading-for-help-to-rescue-cat-stuck-in-tree-for-days-in-west-knoxville/51-c5cd2ad5-858f-4953-ba07-2c8cc8c27d04
In the third picture, where the woman is looking up at the tree, you can see a little black spot up high in the tree…I’m pretty sure that was the cat.
And here is an article about him being adopted:

Lupinium: So do we have everything?
Trevor-Hotep: I’ve been meaning to bring Queen Mags some plants for her trash garden.

Trevor-Hotep: Oh, some bottle brush, some tin can brush, and some real gone begonias.
Avenger: I’m ready when you are.
Lupinium: Let’s go!!

Beatrixia: Hi, guys! I was talking with Adobe Style. She helped me decode a scroll from the Great Pyramid!
Adobe Style: We also found a scroll with pictures of cats in different outfits.
Maat-Tilda: Great! Mind if I stay awhile to visit with Adobe?
Puckmosis: Sure. But how will you get the other scrolls back to the Great Pyramid?
Maat-Tilda: No problem. I’ll have the Papyrus Cat deliver them.
Puckmosis: Don’t say it, Elvis!
