Bea. Lupin. Elvis. Goldie. long ago the 4 cats lived in harmony. but that all changed when the leaves began to fall. only the people, master of the rakes, could stop it. but when to world needed them the most, they went to bed. A 100 years later My brother and I discovered a NEW avatar. A cute leafbender named Puck. And though his cuteness is off the charts, he still has to learn a lot before he can stop the leaves. But I believe Puck can save the world.
“Friends don’t let friends use Ouiji boards.” October is Ouiji Awareness Month. Really, folks, don’t use them. If nothing is out there, nothing will happen. If something nasty is out there, you really don’t want to know what can happen.
Two comics so far today with ouija boards (Liz Climo Cartoons being the other). And here I’ve gone decades without seeing a single one.
Speaking of decades, it is my birthday. I am an amazing 70 years old today, October 14. Wow, never expected that. I am happy to say, though, that I am in excellent health and walk up to six miles a day.
I had intended to spend this special birthday in one of my favorite places, Egypt, but with Covid, well, that didn’t happen. I had planned to have a little party with the Giza pyramids as a background.
So, instead, the special birthday menu is waffles, bacon and eggs for brunch and later carry out (Covid, again) from a favorite restaurant — the best ribs I’ve ever tasted, plus a salad and either onion rings or a baked potato. They send me a birthday coupon each year for a slice of chocolate cake, but that will go in the freezer for later.
I made a Hungarian cake, a walnut torte, for my birthday evening dessert. It is a very rich cake, not too sweet, made with lots of ground walnuts and eight eggs. I made a rich walnut buttercream frosting (lots of butter and ground walnuts and some milk and a little sugar) to go between the layers (I made four layers) and covered the outside with flowers piped from an incredible dark chocolate sour cream frosting (the dark chocolate frosting is not authentic Hungarian for this cake, but it is so delicious). So, no, I won’t put 70 candles on it.
Tillie spelling MOW reminded me of my cat, Elsa waking me up by patting me on the cheek and “saying” MOW. She kept repeating that word until I got up. She wanted me to feed her. I wonder if MOW in cat speak means food or something similar.
Apropos of absolutely nothing, here’s a joke someone posted on the comment boards at The Washington Post today. Maybe some of you have heard it. Edited only to remove the name of The Almighty.
There were these three pets — a Collie, a Poodle and a cat — who lived happily together with their master. Unfortunately, the three pets suddenly died and went to the Pearly Gates of Heaven.
It just so happened that G-d was there that day instead of St. Peter.
So G-d asked the Collie how he felt about his master and the Collie exclaimed that he truly loved his wonderful master! So G-d said, ‘You may come in and sit here on my right.’
Then G-d asked the Poodle how he felt about his master, and the Poodle also exclaimed how much he truly loved and missed his wonderful master! So G-d said, ‘You may come in and sit here on my left.’
Then G-d asked the cat how he felt about his master, and the cat looked at G-d and said, ’You’re sitting in my seat.’
Tillie is sleeping on that planchet just like my Viola goes over and sleeps on my cell phone, effectively hiding it from me until it buzzes and she jumps up. One time I asked, “Siri, where are you?” because I couldn’t find my phone. When Siri replied, from underneath Viola, Vi ran like crazy because she is scared of people and thought it was someone new in the house. I don’t think Tillie is a fraidy-cat though.
“Real Ghost Stories Online” podcast has asked its thousands of listeners for positive Ouiji stories. Only a few were submitted. All the others didn’t end well for the users. The funniest is a group of kids who tried it and one of their late grandmothers came through and scolded them to stop playing with it because it was a tool of the Devil.
Winne-the-Pooh Day —Made his literary debut on this day in 1926. You do know what “ther” means?
Faster Than Sound Day —On this day in 1947 Chuck Yeager became the first man to fly faster than sound. He had the right stuff, and the right people behind him. Have a stick of Beemans™.
Bald and Free Day —If Yul Brenner was your hero, this is your day. Let’s hear it for “Chrome Domes and Achin’ Bones.”
National Fossil Day —"Cheer up, sad world," he said, and winked, “It’s kind of fun to be extinct.” On behalf of all living fossils, thank you.
Speaking of extinct: National FRUMP Day —"Frugal, Responsible, Unpretentious, Mature Person." Well, not actually extinct, but definitely endangered.
International Spinning Top Day —The world spins on its axis. If anyone finds where the string attaches, we are all … yes, Robin, doomed.
National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day —Much easier to do when working from home. Everyone needs a teddy bear, even Tigger. Winne said so.
National Dessert Day —Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first. And today dessert is:
National Chocolate Covered Insect Day — (Fill in the blank.)
I think that many of the so-called means of divination can, in the hands of fraudsters, be tools of theft. Pretty much every psychic I’ve ever seen on TV has simply engaged in well known “cold reading” techniques to tease out information that they then feed back to the “client” as if mystically sensed. Or extrasensed, heh heh.
I have a friend who does Tarot card readings but never accepts remuneration. He tells the questing individual that there is nothing supernatural happening. In his estimation, the encounter is more or less an elaborate Rorschach blot game, a probing of the unconscious. What do you see in this blot? Ah. And what does that mean to you? Here, in the cards, is the Lady of Situations… but I do not find the Hanged Man. How is this meaningful to you?
There have been divinatory tools, similar to the Ouija board , but the one we know is a toy from Hasbro company, even its name a made up advertising gimmick with more of merchandising than mysticism behind it. Oui, French? Ja, German!
As for anything good ever coming from the Ouija, much of the late poetry of William Butler Yeats was inspired by his wife’s experiences with such a device.
But the most important literary yield from the board method is James Merrill’s three volume epic poem, over 500 pages, The Changing Light at Sandover, winner of a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, and a National Book Critics Circle award. He produced it over a period of 20 years and the final full version was published in 1982.
Well, poets have claimed inspiration by Muses for centuries. Merrill just had a few more Muses than most and we are introduced to them by name, some familiar poets of the past, others previously unknown “spirits.”
Do I believe it has supernatural content? I’ll never tell. But it is one of the greatest American literary works of the 20th Century.

I really hate it when a ghost falls asleep on my ouiji board! And how sweet when they spell their version of meow.
