Remember that joke about being in prison and one of the inmates yells out “#43!” and everybody laughs… then another one yells out “Twelve!” and people kind of groan and roll their eyes. The new guy wonders what that’s about, and is told that with nothing else to do, they’ve told the same jokes over and over and over until they decided to save time by just giving them numbers…
In this comic, the guy could just be calling out “#3-a” …
Alas, the problem is far worse than “nature” can handle. CoVid has killed over 2 500 000 in the last year. It sounds promising but barely puts a dent into the nearly 100 000 000 who were born. And the ones who died were mostly old and going to die soon anyway while the newborns can grow up to make more babies.
Here is a question for you: if 90% of the human population were to vanish overnight, what would the world be?
Oh my, DH just told me he doesn’t like discussing anything with me anymore b/c I only see negative things & many things scare me (check out predatory guardianship, my latest nightmare)
But, you know, USA2020, the aftershocks.I can’t find much good news to discuss.
Card to the network news folks. Attention. The Reports on Covid-19 are no long BREAKING NEWS!! Call it the Daily Covid Update or Covid Where You Are, but not Breaking News.
2020 might make us more conscientious about fighting disease in general. It has given us tools to connect more closely with distant loved ones or those in a variety of isolated circumstances, and one hopes that will continue… Uh, after that I got nothing. (Someone above expressed the hope it might make us less materialistic. I’m not sure about that. I suspect it encouraged more people to order things on-line.)
A good run beats a bad fight every time, however, a man who stands for nothing will fall for anything. I’m not sure these platitudes apply, but I haven’t heard them in a while so I thought I would bring them out to play today.
Which writer used to reply to reader letters with postcards that said “Dear Sir or Madam: You may or may not be right. Sincerely…” H.L. Mencken? Mike Royko?
“Mrs. Colonel, who glared at her husband. ’I’ll talk to you about this later, Charles,” she growled. To her surprise, his smile did not change. ‘Yes, dear, I suspect you will, but I think you’ll find that I won’t be listening.’" From Snuff by Sir Terry Pratchett (2011).
And one day, Dear Hubby looks up to hand a card to the wife whose words he constantly ignored, and finds the chair empty and realizes the voice he wasn’t listening to was the television. He decides to lie down and take a nap. When he reaches his bed, he discovers the mouldering corpse of his wife, who had passed away (and was now far beyond the reach of his passive-aggressive ignoring technique) some time ago…
