Summer vacation! When she says that Annie might be traveling, I wonder if she means traveling towards Honeymoon, or to somewhere else farther from Honeymoon. It does seem like things are “progressing” with Astor!
Listen, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m very critical of the strip, especially when we’re forced fed empty calories from barf inducing drival like what’s on todays menu.
What baffles me is how it’s perfectly acceptable for some posters to rip, bash, insult and banish me for my opinions while they totally ignore the stomach churning See no evil comments from the resident fanboy Stepford wife devotees.
FWIW, my (cheap, used) copy of “Derby Dugan’s Depression Funnies” arrived Monday, and I just finished reading it. Definitely worth a read, though it’s not the sort of thing I usually read. A good deal of period atmosphere; interesting characters; some interesting ruminations on friendship, love, family, and creative collaboration. Not much in the way of plot. (Remind anyone of certain comic strips?) Oh, yeah; an interesting anecdote about “The Gumps”. (No idea if it’s true.) Probably more for fans of Annie than of Tracy; but the two strips had a lot in common. I will say that, based on the one Sunday page that Spiegelman created, I’d love to read more Derby Dugan comics!
I don’t think I have ever seen this “Honey” of a girl so giddy. Her beau is making advances and with better results than whatever ones mister Done-all-over has and will be making.
So, I was wrong about my suspicions about Honeymoon. So what. I still say it was an awkward drawing, much the same as H.M. looks in the first panel today. She gets straightened up by panel 3, however.
Just hoping this ties in at some point. The promised trip to see The Tempest disappeared from Abner’s plot line. Will the concert tie in with a Mars Maid plot?
Dear avenger09, while I sympathize with your frustration I feel I must point out one thing. This is a comic strip! It is not real, these are not real people, they do not exist. If you do not like what’s happening…quit reading it! Do not expect others who are reading for entertainment to enjoy your “very critical” remarks. I think it’s fair that you receive a few “very critical” remarks in return, for being a killjoy. You aren’t being forced to do anything, so quit whining. If you are so baffled and stomach churned, maybe it’s time to move on…
HORNY: CUT THE CRAP! I see that you slid my bottle of Tankeray, discount version of Tanqueray, behind you in hopes of sneaking it out to party with your trampy friends.
HONEYMOON: What? Who? Me? Well, if that’s how you’re going to be, I’ll just walk outta here backwards with both hands behind my back. That’s an old Moon Departure that signifies displeasure with the person you’re looking at as you…
Mysta is being portrayed here as a sort of “mother-figure”, or maybe a loving aunt, to Honeymoon. She is helping guide Honeymoon through her early teen experiences, dispensing wisdom and encouragement.
Which makes absolutely no sense. Before her transformation, Mysta was a self-centered, nasty woman, the daughter of a murderous thug. She certainly did not have any sort of sweet, “hold-hands-in-the-movies” teen years. Then, according to the story Team Tracy came up with, she became the subject of a bad “scientific” experiment that somehow infused her with Moon Maid’s DNA. They want us to believe that the DNA has been taking over, so that she is now almost completely transformed into Moon Maid, even though she really isn’t. But, according to the story, Moon Maid came from a vastly different culture, which had no sweet adolescent “dating” either. So what experience does she have to draw on, now that Honeymoon is confiding in her?
Honeymoon is apparently drawn to Mysta because Mysta resembles Honeymoon’s real mother. I get that. But this treacly relationship between them always did feel forced to me. It doesn’t ring true.
Hells bells, it is a comic strip. Not the Dick Tracy I remember but hey, I’m loving other ‘toons I never read! And maybe Neil Wick is right. It’s background set up on the characters?
Avenger..I’m with you, so hang in. The last year or so it seems almost as if Joe etc. have lost interest in this continuing to be a Dick Tracy strip. It’s getting further and further away from the origins and especially the heyday. We are approaching the 90 year anniversary, and the strip seems to have turned into Katy Keene. Can anyone remember when there was a really good villain or story. I mean, even Neil, if he’s honest, would have to search his memory. Sad.
I’m worried that Joe & Mike may be falling into a trap of trying to make the strip appeal to a younger generation which is never going to happen — too many turn-offs for the under-30 crowd — it’s 100 years old, it’s from the print medium, the main characters are law enforcement officials — while downplaying the elements that made so many of us fans of the strip in the first place - first-rate action packed detective stories with memorable villains & and-nonsense heroes. I don’t mind the occasional foray into some sci-fi elements, but plus leave the adolescent soap opera elements to Jim Thorpe.
Nice to see a comfortable conversation, “girl talk,” between Mysta Chimera and Honeymoon Tracy. I think Honeymoon gravitates toward Mysta because she, too, has hyperhuman lunarian abilities or powers, something in common that Honeymoon has not experienced with anyone else. It’s not that Honeymoon doesn’t love or get along with her (step)mother, Sparkle; I’m pretty sure she does. But Mysta, although some years older, is more of a peer to Honeymoon, a “girl friend” she can confide in. And so far Mysta’s discreet advice has not been wrong—Honeymoon is so excited over Astor and his latest behaviors. Her first boyfriend!

Hello, continuity person, I have a nit to pick- we always see the lines around Honeymoons antennas, but nothing at all around Mystas antenna today.

I guess one of the signs of a Lunarian approaching maturity is the changing of the appearance of the eyes. (Check panels 1 and 3.)

Honeymoon might get herself a boyfriend. Junior won’t be a happy camper about it. He may go over to B.O. Plenty to borrow his shotgun.
