One of the problems w/cable news is they focus on achieving ratings instead of actually informing the audience of what is happening in the world.

I have found that I am swearing at the TV world news almost daily now for obvious reasons, and I haven’t improved any yet.

You gotta stop watching late-night TV. The Outer-Limits reruns are keeping you up all night long.

For those who didn’t know (and I guess even for who those who find Google “OMG it’s all just oh so challenging that it gives me the vapors!” or those “My guys on MY NETWORK told me everybody else is biased” types) …

Unfortunately I have to explain to some folks that you have to put your own biases aside before these can be useful.

Not just cable news, but cable all together. Granted non-cable news isn’t any better, but at least I’m saving $100 per month (or more) and I’m not being data mined.

I’m old enough to remember the start of cable TV, I wish I’d had the foresight to record their ads. “Commercial free and always will be” as a selling point to get the gullible to pay big bucks for their service.

It can be frightening. Ignorance may seem to be bliss. I think it is important to be informed. But it can be difficult to know what is true today. Many news outlets seem to show only one side of a situation or emphasize certain stories and details while downplaying others. Some mix opinion in with facts. There is even some actual lying or hiding of stories.

If you are able to have conversations and ask questions. You may be able to find common ground with someone with whom you disagree. You may be able to find that there is more that you have in common than you see/feel on the surface.

Stopped watching most new, especially national news, last year. Was becoming more depressed daily as the emphasis was on the pandemic and its effects, its deniers, and its daily death toll. Recently dropped local news for same reason and only watch the weather report.

Since then I have been able to avoid much depression and its attendant gloom. I substitute selective online news items of interest, and I don’t put up with the botoxed Barbie/Ken imitations of humans giving dramatic readings of events about which they know nothing. Life is brighter.

And, no, I have not ignored the pandemic and its effects or the many other conflicts around the globe. I pray daily for the afflicted and the fallen and their loved ones. As a single individual among billions who may be affected, there is little else one can do.

I sat down to breakfast yesterday and the missus had on some “local” FM radio new station. All I heard was a string of commercials shouting at me to buy this or that followed by a seemingly endless, rapid fire series of maybe a dozen or so headlines without any content to the headlines except the headlines themselves, followed by a string of commercials again. That’s the point where I may have strongly suggested that it get turned off whilst we were eating breakfast.

I have cable but only basic for some shows I like to watch. I have never seen cable news by choice and don’t watch any news. I only read my news and read several sites to try to get a balance. What is so different about cable news? Years ago I used to watch the news after work, and it involved telling us what we were going to see, 5 minutes of actual news, and then a recap of the 5 minutes, plus about half the time was commercials. What does cable news have?

Same for reading most of the comments on the political cartoon side. There are a lot of angry people who think that if you don’t agree with their point of view, you’re an “idiot,” or some other similar term.

The ONLY thing important to any news agency is MONEY, which comes from advertisers, who want LOTS of people reading their ads… and advertisers are pretty much large corporations who don’t really have any feelings like responsibility to anyone but their shareholders…

I do not mind watching some news, however cable is anything but news, they keep repeating the same thing over and over and only some of it is actual news, the rest is opinion and who knows whos opinion. CNN, FOX, BBC, and none agree. Then when a new topic comes up it’s the same thing repeated for hours with different ways to say the same thing with little of it being news.
