Foxy did this last night. I took her to the vet yesterday afternoon for her (several weeks late, finally able to negotiate her into the carrier) rabies shot and she seemed to be fine as always, but kept staring at a spot on the wall near the ceiling. Did she bring home another ghost cat from the hospital or what??
Doesn’t it drive you crazy when they do that? Although Queen Margot did that once ( during the day) and it turns out she was looking at a bat on an upper corner of the wall. I put on gloves and took it outside.
A favorite “Farside” cartoon had a dog and cat talking. One said to the other, “Stare into a corner like you see something. It drives the humans crazy.”
Elvis displays that sudden move to attention that makes you really worried. Cat is fast asleep on knees, then suddenly sits up, eyes wide, ears alert, whole body tense and focussed on …
Oh, and sort of on that topic, we always figure Jelly wants to go out when she starts whining/barking. Well, today Jason took her out, and she didn’t want to go further than the kitchen. Turned out the dishwasher had just finished! He figures she heard the beeps and reacted to it. We always knew she was smart, but dang! A friend has called her scary smart since she was a puppy!
Sorry if somebody’s already said but I’m a bit late turning to October on the calendar and…. Puck-man! Haha! I have a bullet jornal thing and from September I started copying elements of the calendar onto the ‘month’ page. Last month it was Elvis, this month it’s going to be the pumpkin. Happy Funday everybody.
The very last time I didn’t respond to Oogie Boogie and Boudicca ’Woah"ing and staring into the hall at midnight, I discovered a raccoon had fallen thru a hole in the bathroom roof/ceiling and had fetched up on the high plate shelf in the kitchen. (Historic home ownership: not a residence, an indenture.)
OT: Jack went peacefully yesterday. He did not make it to the vet. He was still breathing and even meowed when I put him in the carrier. But by the time we got to the vet he was gone. It seems weird in the house right now cuz the first time in 38 years there is no pet or kids. I’m totally alone.
I had a dog once that liked to play “chase” with me throughout our house. It was an old creepy home complete with a secret passage & weird artwork in backroom of attic. one of the first built in the neighborhood and at least one friend refused to be there near dark for fear of ghosts. So one day Sam and I were playing and I chased him up to the first turn on the first floor steps where we proceeded to have a stare off to see who was going to run first, making them the chasee that round. Suddenly his eyes widened and he alerted to something behind me! Instinctively I turned around to an empty room and he darted past me to the far side of the house winning the game for that day. Let me tell you, that mutt got away with a lot being both smart and cute!
In this world, we know cat and mouse ghosts exist, and Puck can see them. But these ghosts are too polite to bother the humans so the living kitties are just being jerks.
I feel Mr. Kitty, sometimes, and I know he comes by every month or so to make sure the house is safe for me from vermin and monsters. On his first death anniversary, he left us a live small mouse in Mom’s bathtub to let us know he’s still on the job.
When I was in college, my mom lived in a basement apartment waaaaay out in the middle of nowhere, Vermont, where it got VERY dark at night. Her cat, our late, much-missed Felix, liked to come in and lie on my bed next to me while I stayed up too late reading scary novels. He would lie next to me snoozing peacefully, and then, all of a sudden, he would bolt awake, and stare down the pitch-dark hallway as though watching something unseen creeping closer and closer… his tail would puff up, his pupils would get huge… and just when whatever he was watching was right outside my door, and I was thoroughly freaked out, he would… nonchalantly lick a paw, hop off the bed, and wander off to go get a snack.
Having a deaf cat like Lupin would help you know if it was a sound or sight that had their attention (I’ve always assumed it was a sound, like mice in the walls. I think they can make ultrasonic sounds?).Unless, of course, it is a plot. Revenge for using the vacuum!

What, huh, yeah
What do they look for?
Absolutely nothing, uhh
What, huh, yeah
What do they look for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y’all
What, huh (good God)
What do they look for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me, oh
That’s what I despise
’Cause it means intimidation of innocent lives
It means fears in thousands of people’s eyes
When their cats scare ’em off to fright
And woes betide

They’re gonna wait ’til the midnight hour
That’s when your chill comes crumbling down
They’re gonna wait ’til the midnight hour
And act like they’re spellbound
They’re gonna stare so, at nothing, you see
And their act is real spooky, in the midnight hour
Yes it is, oh, yes it is
One more thing I just wanna say right here
They’re gonna wait ’til the stars come out
To put that wrinkle in your night
They’re gonna wait ’til the midnight hour
That’s when their prank makes you most uptight
It’s the only thing they know
That really scares you so, in the midnight hour
Oh yeah, in the midnight hour
Yeah, all right, play it for real one time now
Oh yeah, in the midnight hour
Oh boo!, in the midnight hour
