O.T. pet insurance question. Does anyone have it for their babies, is it worth the money? What company, if any, would you recommend? I don’t want to be irresponsible, but I want to adopt so badly……but it would just kill me if something happened and I couldn’t afford the vet bill and let my baby down.
This is a link to an article explaining how the bug came to be and decorating it for various holidays.—https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/rhode-island/2019/11/25/the-big-blue-bug-gets-lit-rhode-island-answer-ball-drop-times-square/ayhBH0dXumgYobRonb2UnJ/story.html
So my favorite squirrel is now in her secret identity.
Only the friendly reporters on BCN know her secret.
Perhaps she will need to help the blue beetle, or perhaps she is destined to fight with him, we don’t know yet.
But we do know she’s counting down to Christmas, and nothing says Christmas like a giant Blue Beetle with a Lemonade and sunglasses in his Christmas best, red nose and moth-like antennae feelers that look somewhat like Antlers. Perhaps he can tune the local sports events with them.
“Nothing is wrong with your television. Do not attempt to change the channel. Your regularly scheduled program will not be seen because I am controlling the transmission. I control the horizontal. I control the vertical. And those buttons on your remote that don’t seem to do anything? I know what they’re for! From this moment on, your television belongs to me—Big Blue Bug!”**(Teen Titans)
Graduate of R.I.DS.D. in 1959 BA degree in Advertising Design. No mention of decorating a Blue Bug back in the day. But there sure were good jazz concerts & musicians in the mid 50s.
I live in NW Indiana. My daughter and her family live in Foxboro. The Big Blue Bug is my ‘welcome to RI’ every time I fly in or out. Merry Christmas Big Blue Bug! I’ll be seeing you next week!
Tabith-Isis: Here is the latest from the Breaking Ancient News: It is time once again to dress the Big Blue Scarab statue to fit in with the season. What are plans for this year, Tillie?
Maat-Tilda: Sophititi and I have been planning for weeks to celebrate the Yule Season and give a shout out to one of our own.
Sophititi: But the actual design is a surprise. We won’t tell until it is time to unveil the statue.
Ta-Natash: We helped to procure the decorations, but we won’t tell, either.
Sometime Later
Serfig-Aro: Greetings, subjects! It is time to unveil the Big Blue Scarab! Lupinium?
Lupinium: I will now unveil the statue with my biggest Thwump!
Thwump!
Puckmosis: This is quite an honor to one of our own.
Beatrixia: Yes. The Scarab is wearing socks, having a cup of tea, and holding a scroll of the latest bestseller!
Had to search for the video. As I love Kitsch and “road side attractions” when traveling I LOVED IT! Thank you for sharing a bit of Rhode Island with all of us.
OMC, YES!!!! This Rhode Island native is ecstatic to see Nibbles Woodaway featured like this.
It is a veritable institution in the state, to the extent that the company it advertises used to be called New England Pest Control, until they finally gave up and changed the name to Big Blue Bug Solutions after years of having to clarify that “we’re the big blue bug company.” It’s also an actual landmark used for traffic reports and such. It was also one of the first things I showed The Woman the first time I brought her to RI to meet my family. (Yes, she thought I was a little nuts at the time. Still does, but I digress.)
Let’s hear the cheer for a great Providence, RI, landmark. The grandkids always want to see how the Big Blue Bug is decorated when we drive out west on I-95 from downtown.
For me it’s Christmas when I’ve either heard Nat King Cole sing The Christmas Song or watched Miracle on 34th Street with Edmund Gwenn, Natalie Wood, Mareen O’Hara, and John Payne (in black and white, thank you very much). Both after Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Already listened to Nat King Cole.
Hold on, I’m checking the internet now … All right then. Apparently there isn’t much else going on in Providence, Rhode Island! Still, Castro Valley doesn’t have anything that can compete with the Big Blue Bug. So, COOOOOOOL!!!!!
I’ve lived in Rhode Island for 20+ years, know the Big Blue Bug (and have driven past it many times) and never knew that there was a Christmas lighting ritual – will be looking out for it next year!
Ahh the big blue bug! Remember it well…keeping the world safe from pests for as long as I can remember alongside 95 to Providence…started out as an affordable local pest control company and became a landmark! Then an icon

Blue, Blue bug, Rhode Island icon
With your sunglasses on
Time for lights
…….
Big Blue Bug, and now it’s Christmas time,
Your red nose and lights all shine,
Rhode Island red,
…….
Such a jive, off I-95,
With your antlers sublime,
Now I know it’s Christmas time,
Never forget.
…….
Big Blue bug, you make feel all the love
I’d just like to give you a big hug
Big Blue bug, the season’s just begun
Watching them light you is just so much fun
Big Blue bug, look forward to it all
Like New Year’s when they drop the big red ball
Big Blue bug, you make me feel so fine
Rhode Island termite, I love you all of the time!

Big bug resting on an open roof
Dressed up in a bright red nose
Jules-tide carols being sung by a choir
In winter, that’s how the J-Bug rolls
Everybody knows a July bug with mistletoe
Helps to make the season’s fright
Big blue bug with his eyes all aglow
Will make it hard to sleep at night
We know that Julesy likes to play
He’s gonna buzz those reindeer pullin’ Santa’s sleigh
And every mother’s child is gonna cry
To see that blue bug really knows how to fly
And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry chismiss to you
