I guess we can only hope we lose them at about an equal rate, so we won’t notice the horrible food.
My Dad spent his last five years in a residence for those with Alzheimer’s … he’d been getting it for quite a while, but then it got impossible to handle.
At some point I realised they were telling me he was enjoying some foods I knew he’d always hated…
“Oh, we had Chinese food last night (inauthentic Americanised senior residence version) and he loved it!”
There was a time he would have thrown it at them… but I think he couldn’t taste it and didn’t remember what it was.
But he hated vegetables, and DID remember what THEY looked like.
He was diabetic, and always complaining cos he wasn’t allowed sweets, so I tried telling him his green beans were chocolate…
He wasn’t buying it.
In fact he decided the dietetic canned fruit they gave him for dessert was really vegetables, and refused to eat any, even though he’d always loved it.
Luckily, though, he loved to eat everything else…
They had to change his dinner seating cos he quickly cleaned his own plate, then started on his table mates’ meals.
That’s just as well. The better food tastes, the worse it is for you. Eat what tastes good and you don’t get to grow old. That’s the trade-off. So the secret to a long and happy life is to make sure to take your greatest pleasures in things other than eating.
My taste stated changing before senior years hit, oh still do not like brussels sprouts, yet cannot handle vinegar, allergic to chocolate that part bothers me, and no fried food keep from it.
New brain cells are being formed all the time, even in older people. The trick is getting them to wire up properly. This is done by exercising your memory, as well as learning new things.

Brain Cells without question Earl. Not that you had all that many to begin with.

The nerves in the taste system actually regenerate better than any other part of the nervous system.

Your sight doesn’t stay as good either. Getting old is not easy or for sissies. But we get there if we’re lucky.

I, for one, have my brain cells down to a manageable level. Probably due to beer consumption earlier in life.
