Another “pic-a-nic basket” (as Yogi Bear would call it), and we are back to the redeye gravy that we were introduced to in the Coffyhead story. (For those who don’t remember, it’s made with coffee.)
The “nice day” looks like pretty heavy rain as Tracy and Sam, as well as Gertie and B.O. converge on Mr. Memory’s place.
I can’t imagine where this is going to lead…are the Plenty’s going to discover something amiss and have some uncomfortable dealings with Memory just before Dick & Sam arrive? No matter- they have often proved themselves capable in a fight.
Gertie sure has been preparing a lot of food for Memory…her lady friends must like their men on the thick side. Question is who is she trying to fix him up with.
That is a fun, fairly fresh viewing angle for the third panel! Feels kind of like the chase camera view from a game like Saints Row or GTA, and I dig it!
Hmmmm. Yesterday’s Alt Take, humbly, one of my better ones (which means it might’ve elicited a mild chuckle had you been drinking a lot before reading it) IS MISSING!!!
Is that how GoComics punishes Comments that violate their Code now? OR, did one of you Flag it. Man up and let me know if you did. That’s ok. I understand. No worries. I probably can’t find out where you live anyway…
BTW: I reposted it. As B.O. would say “It’s a good ’un” You know, compared to the others.
I know all the talk is in fun and for a good laugh, but DAMN, some of the comments about the Plenty’s cooking up one of their own or the possibility of fattening up Memory even MORE just to butcher him somehow and for whatever reason is a slight bit jarring… give the Plenty’s a break… they’ve shown kindness and hospitality… makes it sound as if the Plenty’s should be in the film, The Hills Have Eyes… c’mon people, cut ‘em some slack… they are just good country folk… a bit weird and hard to look at, but just some down home good ol’ hill folk…
I can I divert that basket to my house? That sounds amazing. I haven’t had red-eye gravy since my grandad passed away nearly a decade ago. Mainly because I love country gravy, but red-eye gravy on ham is so good.
Firestrike has a valid point … Maybe it’s time to admit that the Plentys, characters created by Chester Gould decades ago, as comic relief with their exaggerated rural stereotype manners & characteristics, have not aged well in the 21st century, & maybe it’s time to let them go.
The generous Plenty’s prepare a country feast for their new neighbor, Mr. Memory, who is a big boy and plainly needs lots of food! Gertie has been hard at work filling the food basket.
Meanwhile, Tracy puns on memory as Sam cruises down the well-known route in their marked car.
Looks like we’re about to have a big Old Style* gathering!

1-B.O.: Attitude smells mighty tasty!
2-GERTIE: Thankee, B.O. I had to marinate that boy for hours to tender him up. That shouldn’t be a problem with the girl.
3-DT: Nothing like a trip up the old dirt road, is there Sam?
SAM: SPUTTER/STAMMER. I don’t swing that way, Tracy!
DT: What?
SAM: OH! …Never mind…
