Luann. This is a complicated assignment. You ought to go to the teacher and tell him he can’t expect his students to know how the painters feel or think. Only a painter can write such a diary about painters. If I were Van Gogh, I’d write in my diary about the illicit drugs I took last night that led me to paint Starry Night.

    Van Gogh?

    That’s easy, Vale-O:

    (Alarm Clock Ringing)

    “Woke up.”

    “Got out of bed.”

“Took a knife, unto my head.” – “A day in the Life.” Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

On second thought, perhaps you should listen to Don McLean’s “Vincent” for inspiration.

I do notice in the second panel that he and Luann do share a habit/behavior. When Luann has been depicted as working and concentrating on something, her tongue goes out just like his. I have seen a number of people over the years that do that, and I do wonder why.

Interesting. Despite his problems in showing emotions, Vale’s choice was one of the most emotional painters ever. If Luann can get him to read “Letters to Theo”, he could discover a whole new world full of emotions, passions, desires, hopes and despair related to making art with the total belief that it’s the most important thing in life.

    Luann misses the point,

essays like this are not so much about creativity.

They want you to research the artist´s life and then make plausible statements about why is she painting in a certain technique etc. They usually don´t want two pages about Toulouse-Lautrec´s favorite Absinthe den or van Gogh endorsing safety razors.

Probably Vale, because Ox is just a big, loveable teddy bear who wouldn’t wish any harm on anybody. But right now, we don’t know anything about Vale. For all we know, he is just being stand-offish because he is nervous around Luanne because he is attracted to her, and he is shy. And maybe, he just doesn’t have much imagination.

“Artist” is a very broad term. It can refer to anybody in the arts, including singers and actors. It doesn’t have to be somebody in the visual arts.

Also, does Luann REALLY want to urge Vale to dig into Van Gogh’s mind? Because it wasn’t a good place. Does Vale even know that Van Gogh killed himself?

I think, because the characters are aging, they are not naturally as funny. Some people continue to have a great sense of comedic timing throughout their life but most of us are just the audience. This arc is good, it is showing how great Luann is as a teacher. She is really helping Vale with his assignment without showing any of what she is thinking, which for her is a real sign of maturity. Yea Luann!

You know Vale said it was “emotional” for him to do this assignment. Why? Personal fear he can’t do it? Real lover of Van Gogh (have to be something wrong with someone who doesn’t at least like Van Gogh art, what makes him one of the top 5 artists, in the West, anyway)? Luann’s task, no matter how hilarious, is to find what he is emotional about. I will hazard a guess that him being what too many here mock as a dumb palooka might not be. Too many assume that is what GnK mean here, but I smell a major misdirection play coming.

Making fun of Van Gogh’s mental illness is a sad refection on what people laugh it here.

It was the first suggested he had bipolar disorder in 1947, and this has been supported by the psychiatrists Hemphill and Blumer. Biochemist Wilfred Arnold has countered that the symptoms are more consistent with acute intermittent porphyria, noting that the popular link between bipolar disorder and creativity might be spurious. Temporal lobe epilepsy with bouts of depression has also been suggested. Whatever the diagnosis, his condition was likely worsened by malnutrition, overwork, insomnia and alcohol.

BTW, eyewitnesses say he only actually severed his earlobe. He died of a self inflicted gunshot to the chest that became infected, not from the bullet itself.

Vale is younger than Luann; he’s just physically big. He’s in high school probably having to do summer work. And Luann is doing a great job; it would be easy for her to make suggestions (or do the whole assignment herself); but as a good teacher she’s making Vale do do all the work and thinking, forcing him to come up with everything.

I can’t say I know what Greg thinks, or how he goes about creating characters, but this Vale doesn’t seem to be Greg’s drawing style at all. It seems like, in trying to relate to a younger generation, he’s created characters like Axel and now this Vale who are just kind of obnoxious and ugly. Ignorant wise guy punk with puckered lips and acne face, sneering muscle bound idiot hulk who can barely write his name, they just aren’t interesting at all, anyway, not to me. Maybe he’s just bored with drawing the same characters all the time.
