My uncle Thomas and my mother were in twelfth grade and ninth grade respectively when they went to school together. I was told Tom denied to his buddies he didn’t have a younger sister named Clare or even a younger sister at all.
IMHO this teacher is kind of a jerk. You don’t comment, either positive or negative, about siblings you’ve had. Better to limit it to asking if they’re related. Of course, Hammie doesn’t have any self-esteem issues so he’ll be alright!
My 3rd grade teacher always got the siblings of her students, she had tenure :) She got my younger sister and all was well.
She also tried teaching our younger brother. He was finally diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. She had him assigned to another teacher who worked with kids who had it. She was sad about it, but said it was the best thing for him
In my home town the guidance councilor followed the class. Mr J had my older sister first, then myself, then my younger brother. He said that once all the Miller kids were through he was retiring. He didn’t want to take a chance on there being more. (He did retire – There weren’t more)
Teachers make the same mistake some parents do in comparing sibling to each other and wonder why they aren’t the same in personality, temperament, etc. My mother once yelled at me “Why can’t you be more like your sister?” I replied, not so calmly, "Because I have a p_nis and am a boy.
We’ve always talked to the teachers, asking them not to compare our 2 girls (who are 2 years apart in age). Thankfully, they are so different in personality – the older one is very mature & studious, the younger one sunny and always ready to help others – that it was never an issue…although most teachers WANTED to have both of them! Their second grade teacher, when they got their student lists, she actually talked to another teacher about trading a student because she wanted our younger girl so badly!
I never had that problem in school seeing that my sister and I were in the same grade even though she is 1 1/2 years older, she was held back in 1st grade because she wasn’t as advanced as she should have been for her age, she suufers from disabilities with her brain due to injury while in the womb from when my idiot bio “sperm donor” threw at lamp at mom when she was 5 months pregnant with sister and it hit her right in the stomach.
A teacher may subconsciously compare a student to an older sibling — it’d be hard to refrain from doing that — but should never tell the student. Let each child’s behavior and classroom skills stand on their own.

Even if you drop the word ‘refreshing’ from that statement, it still has the ability to terrify!

I wonder if the teacher’s description of Zoe MacPhearson was delivered straight or in an ironic tone? ;D

Hamish? As I recall, in the strip(s) back when he was born, he was named Abraham.

I went through something like this in high school with a teacher who kept telling me how wonderful my sister was and that I’m nothing like her….

So familiar. One grade behind two-years-older sister. Told by several teachers, “you’re nothing like your sister.”

So where did they get Hamish from? I always thought Hammie was an unusual name but figured maybe it was Hamilton.

It is refreshing to see Hammie being so honest on his first day of school. Don’t get used to it though, because it won’t last until noon.

Hammie is confident enough to forge his own reputation (good or bad) instead of trying to live up to Zoe’s. Hammie the most self-aware in the strip.
