Bernice is demonstrating an embarrassing lack of self awareness. Laughing at Luann’s expense defines Bernice. Hypocrite. (Or maybe the writing is unaware.)
SO Luann DID make fun of other people but kept quiet until she got on her recorder and spilled them all. Now she is sharing them with Bernice. Luann might look like a goody-two-shoes girl next door but she has a dark side that only Bernice knows…
Luann still has a long way to go to become an author. Pretty much all teenagers books series have a main character full of problems and flaws, and readers love them for that very reason. In my opinion, the problem here is not that Luann doesn’t want to make a bad impression by telling her adventures, but it’s her low self-esteem and it’s sad to see this again.
One of the more grand ones was when Gunther was headed into the library before hours, the sprinklers soaked him, and Luann walked in to catch him in the nude, changing out of his soaked clothes and into his “Billy The Bookworm” outfit. Gunther’s “Billy The Bookworm” outfit was one of Greg’s more far – out innuendos. If I recall, Luann was smiling at what she saw…
I’m sort of in a mood today, so here’s the rant. I don’t like “humor” which denigrates someone else, especially when it is calculated to humiliate. Gentle teasing is one thing, but to purposefully expose someone else to ridicule, in my opinion is appalling. I don’t want to be treated in such fashion, so I do my best not to treat another thusly. I’m not perfect and sometimes I succumb to a baser instinct, but I do try and it appears to me what passes as humorous these days is designed to denigrate. End of rant…apologies.
It’s interesting to see how many people are taking Luann’s side today. I mean, I despise Bernice as much as anyone, but she’s got a point here. Luann is headed for failure and some much-deserved humiliation if she decides to base her entry on ridiculing others. Too bad it won’t lead to any self-awareness on her part, since G&K are determined to avoid any character growth these days.
if writing good comedy means being able to laugh at yourself, i.e. learning not to take yourself so seriously (which I agree it is) then the solution here is for both of them to enter the contest. Lets see if they can each do this.
OK. For all you people who are screaming about what a vicious b**ch Luann is for thinking about writing “mean” things about other people…..that problem is easily solved.
1. Luann changes all the names.
2. Luann includes this statement with her story:
“This story is a work of fiction. The characters, incidents, and dialogue are drawn from the author’s imagination and are not to be construed as real. Any resemblance to actual events or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.”
Years ago Luann and Aaron Hill were paired up (!) and they wrote a short story called “Bob’s Infected Nose”. It won a school contest. Maybe Luann should dig it out.
I don’t know, if another “luan” will appear in this comic strip. One that is named “luan Loud”. You got watch out for that pratical joker, Luann. You know what I mean. I don’t know if I spelled Ms. loud’s name correctly.
Luann is not far enough removed, emotionally, from her own angst to write about herself – as demonstrated a few days ago when Bernice said that her romantic foibles were amusing. Remember Luann’s expression? She clearly wasn’t at all amused. In today’s strip, when she says, “I’m not funny,” she means that the things that happen TO HER aren’t funny. I don’t honestly see anything very funny about any of the incidents she wants to write about. Don’t think a prize is forthcoming.

Bernice is afraid Luann is going to succeed. She has to start getting her jabs in before that happens.

So it’s okay for Bernice to insult and make fun of others, but it’s wrong when others do it? For someone so smart, Bernice is very hypocritical.
