I’m confused: I always understood there was only one old bearded character checking people in at the pearly gates. Now I see whole ranks of them, like in an airport. Who are all these folks, and are we still monotheist?

I think we should be told.

Lying. Leaving God and the religiosity factor out of it, I think there is a need to break down this thingy we uses casually to characterize these bad actors and demons in our midst. Not so simple. Look in the mirror. https://www.nirandfar.com/types-of-liars/

Lying is the act of both knowingly and intentionally or of willfully making a false statement. Normal lies are defensive, told to avoid the consequences of truth telling — to avoid embarrassment, avoid punishment, conflict or danger — for self-preservation. Such lies are singular — told in the moment. People also tell “fibs”, “half-truths,” “white lies” to spare another’s feelings or to make a situation easier to understand. These lies reflect a pro-social attitude, and make civilized human contact possible.

But there are three types of perpetual liars, people who seem to have difficulty distinguishing between reality and lie:

Natural liars are people who can lie easily with great success and skill. They don’t believe their own lies but are really good at it. Think salesman or actor.

A compulsive liar is someone who bends the truth about everything, large or small. Telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable; lying feels right. They often lie for no clear reason and sometimes for no real benefit. They lie spontaneously and tend to tell lies that they think people want to hear.

Pathological liars lie incessantly to get their own way and do so automatically, with little awareness. They are often goal-oriented, telling lies to get their own way. They have little regard or respect for the rights or feelings of others and are often manipulative. They create extravagant stories and maintain and enhance them over time. They make up stories unnecessarily and it often becomes difficult (for them and for others) to distinguish between the truth and the lies. They are confident while lying — they can ‘look you straight in the eye’. They hold no value for truth.

“When in doubt, tell the truth. That maxim I did invent, but never expected it to be applied to me. I did say, ‘When you are in doubt,’ but when I am in doubt myself I use more sagacity.” Mark Twain in his “When in Doubt, Tell the Truth” speech of March 8, 1906.
