Okay, so how about this for a question: can you explain the subject of antidisestablishmentarianism?

I thought this was a class on memoir writing. This first assignment seems more about interviewing techniques.

Mrs. Horner reminds me of a woman I knew. She was in her early 90’s and still driving her caddy. Had been all over the world and was so full of life. Sadly, she passed in 2020. I suspect it was Covid because she was in a nursing home.

I always did the two question thing when I went on job interviews.

“How many breaks do we get?”

“How much vacation do we get?”

I got really good at it as I went on countless interviews.

I always hated Mrs Horner. All she ever did is point out Luann’s flaws.

Luann is apparently going to be Ms. Horner’s go to girl until she finds another student to hone in on for driving a point home to the masses. The only way she would not go to Luann for the first question of day one is if she saw Nil in the class sitting next to Jack and decided to start the day off with asking him about things that you can do on a carefree summer day in the park. Nil could smile and say that he enjoyed strengthening the foundations of relationships and that he heard voyeurism is a fun activity as he seemed to not be bothered by the bird watchers though Bern was totally embarrassed. Ms. Horner’s class looks like it will be a bit of fun, unlike Mr. F’s class over on the retro Luann where Knute is trying his lame Jeff Spicoli imitation on Mr F for the thousanth time.

Great Mrs. Horner. After this Luann will think better about her questions, I think Luann deserves a second chance and I would like to see what Tara will ask to her.

You said to ask her two questions. She asked two questions. If you wanted something different, you might have provided more guidance. Luann did exactly what you asked her to do.

Mrs. Horner’s teaching technique needs a lot of work.

500 words, huh? I never got that. Do the teachers actually count the words that are in an essay?

So she calls on Luann, knowing she will give the answers needed for her “opener”. Never mind humiliating her on day one of the class, she knows Luann is used to it. Yesterday Luann was all misty-eyed with admiration for Mrs. Horner….today, me thinks maybe not so much Lol!

I think I could write 500 words given the information Luann asked for and got. Dune, being a sci-fi book by Herbert and the color red being bright and bold…lots of ways to make that work.

wait a minute … a female who likes “Dune” ???? Now THAT’S straining believability!

Those aren’t bad questions. It’s creative writing and I could write a 500 word story based on that info.

She’s a fantastic teacher, a digital inspiration for second career teachers such as myself. Having a curious, inquiring, and thinking mind, along with a developing imagination, and hardest, SELF-DISCIPLINE (oh do I wish I had it -:) is what is basically necessary. Assessing Lu and Tara as if they were my real-world students, I would assess Tara as having all those traits (such potential) while Luann needs to finally do what she wants by becoming awake to HER potential. I’m almost tempted to refer to students I have in real classes who remind me of Lu in this regard. Having a friend like Tara is good though. I would assign them to the same group project and let Tara be captain. Just saying.

I disagree with the teacher. A simple question might be more likely to get answered and from those answers, a good interviewer could generate more penetrating questions. From the answer of “Red” one could ask, “So, you have a fiery personality?”. And from the answer of “Dune” one might ask, “And which character of Dune do you see yourself?” Thus, the simple questions and simple answers can give you insight into the guest’s mind and thinking from which to form more interesting questions.

Knowing someone’s favorite color tells nothing about them at all. Knowing their favorite book tells you more about them. I’m sure Luann could think of better questions if she had time to think.

You can be more creative with only two simple clues. Is she supposed to write a biography?

Not a matter of fairness. A matter of showing common mistakes to avoid.

Mrs. H. Is getting off to a good start and she’s going to be tough—-which means they’ll learn a lot. One of my hardest English teachers was also my best. She embarrassed me frequently in class because she knew I had potential. And she was also the one I showed my poems to and she suggested I see the editor of our school newspaper. I did and both of my poems were published along with a story about ME! It was my first publication and I was thrilled!!!! She gave me the courage to put my work out there.

Mordy, we all hope you are doing ok. The board isn’t the same without your comments. There’s no one to stick up for Gunther!!!! So please take care and we hope to hear from you soon.

As a former reporter I agree. Asking opened-ended questions can get yes or no answers.

more evidence that Tara is not D. Coverly as some might have thought previously; favorite book is Dune. Tara is into science fiction and she mentioned previously (to Luann) that she had several writing pieces that she was working on some of which were in the sci fi genre.

I learned how to ask questions that invite expanded answers, not short or Yes/No answers. For this teacher’s class, I’d ask a question like, “In a hundred words or more, what do you find meaningful in your life?” :>)

Give Luann a break, she’s just starting out.

Bad teacher move, there. Horner could have gently prodded with, “can you dig deeper, Luann?” Why is Horner even teaching? Has she a teaching license? Evans perpetrating the bulls#^∆ that anyone can teach. No, they can’t. It’s a skill, a talent. That Horner has stories to tell doesn’t mean she can teach others to write their own.

Tara catches on. Luann remains clueless. Mrs. Horner is requiring 500 words, to be built with the help of these two (and only two) questions….

Only 500 words for someone whose favorite color is Red and favorite book is Dune? Hmm, challenging. With more complex questions, you could write a book. [sings, a la Frank Sinatra] If they asked me, I could write a book…
