To escape the Earth after we ruin it and start over, on a planet with no water, no air, no food, no way plants can grow outdoors, and 2/3rds Earth’s gravity. No outdoor activities ever either….forever indoors or stuffed into a sealed suit. Enjoy your new life living in a permanent desert as a package of meat.
I once came up with an idea for a sci-fi story about a guy who puts himself into suspended animation, with the idea that when he wakes up 500 years from now people will have gotten their act together and the world will be a paradise.
Only when he does wake up, he finds out that all the decent and wise people have followed his example and had themselves frozen as well, leaving the world in the sole control of the selfish short-sighted jerks for 500 years, so they all wake to a world that’s worse than it would have been if they’d left things alone.
“It is true that we are weak and sick and ugly and quarrelsome, but if that is all we ever were we would millenniums ago have disappeared from the Earth.”
Mars is a good place to found a colony. As a stop towards mining the asteroid belt and the moons of the gas giants. Suspect will be a mix of domes and underground dwellings. Unless, the idea of using a tactical nuke to jump start the core is real.
Same thing happened when people left Europe for “religious freedom” in the New World. They brought all their old hatreds with them and wrote laws discriminating against all the people they didn’t like from the old country. (Which is why the Constitution separated church and state.)
There is abundant evidence to show that Mother Nature’s experiment with humans has been a complete and utter flop. True, there are many humans who show us what we can be at our best- the inventors of paper clips, triple-scoop ice cream cones and Jennifer Lopez come to mind. But can that relatively small handful of people redeem the rest of humanity?
I’ve never considered myself a “people person.” But I have revised my opinion. I can handle people as a whole, I suppose. It’s just certain individuals I can’t stand. 8>)
Had do you destroy the earth? It is a big rock circling the sun, we can’t destroy it, and we can only mess up the environment that supports life for us.
But seriously: if NASA listened to Roberta Bondar and buit a moon base for all the money that has been spent, and being spent, on this rickety revolving space station, we would be on Mars today.
You don’t have to like the answer, but you have to accept it. People do, have ruined everything. The ONLY solution that will save the species is the drastic reduction in the number of people on the planet. Sadly it is most likely too late. Science is not going to come up with some magical solution that lets us keep breeding.
Leaving the Earth because we’ve made it uninhabitable is the worst solution of all. If we can’t keep Earth, the planet on which we’ve EVOLVED, hospitable for human life, we’ve got no business exporting the product. If/when we get our act together here, we can maybe think about taking the show on the road. You don’t put together road companies for shows that flopped on Broadway.

The problem with living on Mars is that there’s no manufacturing. You’ll be stuck with the same smartphone forever.

The earth will expire on its own anyway, so we will still need to have other places to go. Although O’Neil tubes would be better than other planets.

With all the technology required to make Mars a viable livable habitat, we could just use that same technology to fix Earth issues.

Leave the planet when it becomes uninhabitable? That’s being proposed as a real “solution”?
“When you’re outdoors and it starts raining, what do you do?”
“Run under a tree for shelter.”
“What happens when the water starts dripping thru the leaves?”
“Run under another tree.”
Does nobody see the logical flaw here?
