My next door neighbor once had dog that they let outside on a chain staked to the ground. He had access to the back porch and a 50’ circle. Their yard went deeper.
Every day, a cat came through their yard and called to the dog until he noticed. Full speed off the porch; did a somersault at the end of the chain; and barked at the cat sitting 2-3 feet away. The cat would lick itself a couple times and continue across the yard … every day. Basically evil.
Took me awhile (short awhile, but awhile) to get it. Very funny, when I finally figured out that it was the cat doing the calculations – Hey, it’s morning here…
Well, that explains that mystery. Dogs can do the same calculus. Either that or their genetic programming stems from a prehistoric period when they were raised and cared for by orangutans. I doubt that that applies to cats.

Working out just how close it can get and still be out of reach of the hoomin. I know it well.

One of my cats does something like this only she is within enough reach that my fingers can touch her. Then she decides she likes it and moves closer.

Just close enough, just far enough away.

Mark used a darker than normal color for the man. In all those figures, he’s the tangent.

That’s our youngest cat
He was a humane society rescue and he’s shy about attention
With him, he stands just close enough that I can pet him but far enough away he can run at any time

Apparently the shortest distance between two points that are out of reach is a straight feline.
