I’ve been getting a message every day, for the last two weeks, saying that my Netflix® account has been “frozen” because of “payment issues!!” Funny, I’ve been watching it ….. everynight!!!
Some years ago, I got a robo call offering to lower my credit card rate. I was bored, so I picked up to have some fun with the scammer. I had a credit card from 2 different banks at the time, so I asked him to identify which bank he was from. All he could say was he was from my bank. I could hear him getting annoyed, but I kept telling him I couldn’t proceed until he told me what bank he’s from so I knew which card he was talking about. He eventually lost his temper and said something along the lines of “the bank of f—- off c—- sucker” and hung up on me. I had fun that evening.
my adult children were saying how the phones listen when they are on standby and the tv as well my wife and i tried it last night about golf/and MEN issues , Yup ads came up on her phone on how to get help for the problem .
Got some alert about an order that was cancelled. I use my landline for any telephone orders and they don’t have my cellphone number. I find it is a great way to tell phishing scams. Then there are the bank emails from banks I don’t use.
And it keeps getting worse. If you get a call saying a close relative has had an accident or is in jail and you need to send cash, the thieves use so-called AI to fake the alleged victim’s voice and convince you that the situation is real. Either ignore, or give all of your relatives a secret “safeword” that can be used to verify their identity. If you ever use the safeword, change it.
Some advice from the world of IT Support: never ever click on anything in a suspicious email, including “unsubscribe.” Any link can be hijacked. Just delete the thing. Marking it as spam does not help much; scammers change their address often.
The scariest thing I have seen is “Texas School District Scammed for Millions – Ep. 6.237” in YouTube by lawyer Steve Lehto. https://youtu.be/hcFgObo6RE4
I’ve been getting those calls at 4AM. That time slot is reserved for family emergency calls!I cannot block them or call them back, they are totally annoying!
That happened to my wife. The bank called because of a small change transaction from a school in Maryland. As we are in central Canada it was flagged and a new card issued.
I got a message like that from my credit card company and it was legit. Someone was trying to make a $1200 purchase at Best Buy. I clicked deny and called my credit card company with the number on the back of my credit card and got a new credit card issued! I never call the number in the message.
If it is a legitimate message, deleting it will get your account frozen. Not all messages are spam or phishing. When in doubt, call the number on your bill – NOT any number in the message.
I got several calls from the “Medicare Division” from a certain company, asking if I was over 65. Looked up the company on Google, called their number and in less than half an hour, someone from there called me back, to tell me it was a scam. They had complained several times to the FCC about someone using their business name, but since it was coming from overseas, the FCC couldn’t do anything about it. Now I’m getting calls saying it was reported that I was in a car accident within the last two years and could get a settlement if i was innocent. Whenever I get a call and answer “Hello”, I hang up as soon as I hear the “Byoop” meaning since I answered, I’m getting transferred to someone live. Or when the AI calls and asks how I am, I say “Supercalifragilisticexpialadocius!” They hang up.
My Pay Pal account is closed every few days, I closed it years ago and removed all account info on it, I will never use them because of that, I have forwarded those to their fraud department, but they never respond and it just keeps happening!!
One of the advantages of NOT giving out our email addresses to bank, credit card co, etc is when husband started receiving emails from “our bank” about account shortages – we KNEW they were fake and ignored them.
We have one credit card we use for anything which has to be auto charged or for the rare times we order something (almost always a problem with orders with any business so do not order unless no other way to get the item and it is ABSOLUTELY NEEDED). That account has a US$1000 maximum limit.
