I’m with Pucky! Free to nap in the laundry, but Beatrix is a cat after my own heart. Karma for the late night fireworks jerks! Still going on here BTW.
Beatrix making crank calls? I’m shocked, SHOCKED I tell you. I wish I had the nerve, not to mention the phone numbers, to make such phone calls to folks who set off fireworks after 11:00. (Where I live, it doesn’t get dark until around 10:00 this time of year.)
I can’t sleep right now, because some neighborhood nitwit has been randomly setting off firecrackers, so I’m free to make a Comforting Chocolate Cake with Double Effing Fudge Frosting. You know, to calm my effing nerves.
When my late Mollycat had her first July 4th, she jumped up to the windowsill and watched the neighbors’ fireworks and listened to the city’s. Enjoyed herself. Every year following, under the bed. Last year was my first year with Zuzudog (then 4 yrs), she ignored all booms. Tonight, the evening of the 3rd, she’s implementing the Elvis as-close-to-your-face-as-I-can-possibly-get coping strategy as one neighbor disturbs the peace of us all.
Elvis is eating with a vengeance. Puck has a great idea.
Can she call my neighbors next? The neighbors’ fireworks are playing hob with my PTSD. I’m not a veteran, I just have excellent reasons to fear guns going off.
We brought a rescue Dobe home yesterday after a three hour drive one way to Cleveland to pick him up. For him and my husband, it was love at first sight. There have been fireworks and guns going off at night for a week already out here (we’re pretty rural and there’s usually some form of hunting anyway) and so far, he hasn’t batted an eye. Murphy was petrified with any noise that resembled a bang of any kind including a dropped lid, something on the TV…which he wasn’t prior to losing our Red Girl. So this will be interesting. I haven’t seen Shorty since we walked in the door, but all in good time. She’ll meet him on her terms when she’s ready, but the first home with the rescue org that he stayed with had cats and he ignored them which was another reason we were interested in him. She’ll inch her way downstairs eventually.
When I see videos of these idiot amateur pyrotechnicians having to run away with their pants smoking because their overwrought and underthought fireworks display went awry, I wonder if I’m supposed to feel bad for them.
Our family 4th of July story, before I was born: family was in the backyard, with a bag of fireworks to set off later. However my grandfather was smoking, some ashes fell into the bag, and well – you can imagine: they all went off at once! No one was hurt, but the cat jumped up, ran straight through the house, and through the screen door on the other side! Poor kitty.
May the Fourth be with you, but not too loudly. Tonight we’re having General Tso’s Chicken (home made) and watching either The Crossing or 1776.
On this day all US citizens should celebrate not only independence, but also John Adams, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin. Without their efforts and sacrifices, this country would not exist.
Justice for Trevor! I saw a short video last night of a man suggesting we buy and donate dog food to shelters with the money we were going to buy fireworks with.
Last night I heard a heavy distant rumbling and wondered was it the predicted thunderstorm arriving two days early. Then I remembered one of the small towns down here was doing their fireworks show on the 3rd. Why, I do not know.
Anyway, all the pops and pows and booms set off a case of kitty zoomies.
Elvis and Trouble have a lot in common. Trouble’s been eating plants and throwing up everywhere. :( Hubby and I are SO worried about him. David says he’s back to his perky self after his latest upchucking, but I can’t help but worry. Can’t wait for noon so I can go home for lunch and then work from home for the remainder of the day. (sigh)
I know it’s late, but out of curiosity—how many of you follow the mostly southern tradition of putting salt on your 4th of July watermelon? It does help add electrolytes on hot, sweaty days. But, where I come from, we were also told an old wives tale as children that eating watermelon without salt would give you diarrhea (not true, of course, unless, I suppose, you ate an awful, awful lot of it).
Once again I am in admiration of Georgia’s talents, as she once again uses her artistic pen in her text. You can hear just how Bea speaks her last line from a stroke of the pen.
Get it, Bea!! They shoot them off for a week before and sometime all the way through the night and into the morning. The cats and I have not slept well at night since June 27th. I’m with Bea on this one!!

Elvis-Anum: I’ll have chips with my burger and a side of fruit salad.
Lupinium: I’ll have a tomato on my burger.
Beatrixia: Are we having fireworks this year?
Iggy: We can watch them from the boat.
Ora Z: Can we light fireworks on the boat?
Iggy: No, we need the boat to stay afloat. But we can toast marshmallows when we get back.

Must have been loud
But it’s over now
Covers her head with a pillow
To escape the raucous sound
She lies there angry, hoping for silence
In the bedroom and all around
Cursing now, at three am
She dials away
It must have been loud, but it’s over now
It must have been rude, and she lost it somehow
It must have been loud, but it’s over now
From the moment they’re torched, ’til the rockets flared out
Hoped and prayed for wet weather
So the fireworks cannot start
But instead she will wake you
Like a bomb blast in your ear
And after Bea has her say
She dreams away
It must have been loud, but it’s karma now
