My wife has resurrected her “I want to live in” wish lately. 20 years ago it was Flagstaff, and here we are. Since then it has been Maine, Virginia, a remote spot a handful of miles outside a small town, Ruidoso NM…. She is semi-serious about living someplace where we don’t have neighbors, even though we are at the health issue stage. I remind her our live-in son is not going to improve; a childhood of prednisone has damaged his skeleton and connective tissues. He would not be alive today if a level 1 trauma center had not been just a few miles away. In three hours she is undergoing a second heart procedure herself. I guess dreams don’t hurt.
What’s really sad is the time you must have the “Do we need to live with one of our kids or at least someplace where they can keep an eye on us?” But it’s better than wondering which institution will be taking care of you. It was an honor and privilege to care for my parents when the time came, after all that they did for me.
I agree with earlier posts, this is going in a direction I wasn’t expecting. After being out of the picture for a long time, the kids now have the potential to be center stage. The “set up” is Gus living with the kids, condo empty, A&J getting older. The story line for the past few years did not include jobs, so they’re retired. Luddy can move or (at his advanced age) be written out of the strip. If they move will this bring the sailboat back into the picture? And I agree, will Janis give up her yard/garden? Maybe to work with Meg? Lots of “stuff” on the table. I can’t wait to see where all this goes.
When I first read today’s strip, I thought this was Janice joining Arlo at the crack of dawn since she seemed to be so tired and he seemed to be so alert….then I noticed the moon…and the sky was darker than it would be a dawn. Apparently Janice just cannot keep up with Arlo’s energy whether it be morning or night!
Yep. Retired 1998, in 2003 youngest graduated from HS and we both hated winter so left MI, retired to warmer climes-San Antonio TX-Moved from country to city. 14 years later, wife decided we should move to where youngest daughter now lives, so moved back from city to a rural area, this time in Oklahoma.
Not wanting to be a pessimist, I feel that it should be pointed out that vacation spots should be just for vacations. Otherwise, it just becomes part of a humdrum normalcy. Of course, if Arlo and Janis move there, they will be close to their son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter.
The Mrs and I (and the girls) had that conversation in 2010 when we were visiting our vacation home. We started remodelling and renovation that year and finished up in 2016 and moved up here permanently in 2017. I passed the boards in 2016 and was able to join a practice that year with them knowing that I would not be in until 2017. Make sure you take your time to do it right.
Once again JJ has been hiding in my house. My son and daughter-in-law have tried to convince me to the move from the mid west to the pacific coast and live with them. It’s good to be wanted but my life is here. Friends, hobbies, my church and the house I shared with my beloved wife who past away in 2019. Maybe some day, we’ll see…

Well, this isn’t where I thought this was going. Will the strip take a new direction with A&J moving closer to the kids and Meg?

Buy the condo. It has a fabulous view?

Our fave couple is looking older, plumper and saggier than I can ever remember. Maybe JimmyJ is ready to pull the retired/grandparent trigger?

Why don’t they? Do either of them still have jobs? Real ties to their community other than the house?

The moon in panel one is a match for last night’s moon. Coincidence? Or does JJ pay attention to details?

I bet on the Gulf coast, from Tejas to the tip of FloriDUH, even at night, outside, they would be miserable and dripping sweat.

Time for downsizing the old lifestyle, and Meg will need help with the new baby.

No, the “where do babies come from?” conversation.
Or the “how to behave if a cop pulls you over” conversation.
