Sadie and I met a couple yesterday – we were about the same age (70s) and we we shared an interest in gardening. We’d chatted for almost an hour, and I feel that both of us thought we’d found new friends.

There’s an old saying about what not to mention in mixed company: religion, politics, and sex.

They turned out to be staunch supporters of – well – an individual we find to be repulsive (with a capital R). We both tried to minimize our feelings on the subject, but it remained the elephant in the room (literally and figuratively:)

It was sad – I think we parted both wistfully thinking we’d enjoyed each other’s company, but the vast wall between our political leanings would be a constant irritant dividing us. We could have been fast friends . . . hard to come by at our age.
