With ten of ‘em, you’d have a great pickup line.

And most of them will never leave asphalt or carry anything bigger than a bag of groceries. They do end up in ditches in the winter when their drivers think that 4-wheel drive will help them stop or turn instead of just helping them go.

My wife and I tossed the last feral hog I shot in the back of my Armada. I field dressed it first to get the weight down, Weathertech is good for more than mud. It hauls most of what I need, and the seats stay down 95% of the time. A trailer hauls the larger stuff. Never been able to talk myself into a pickup.

I drove F350 Super Duties (no wise cracks about big piles of stuff, now!) for the last couple years at work. Necessary for off-road but not my choice for paved roads, especially in ice and snow. No off-road snow tires, but for off-road we had chains that weighed about 20 lbs each. Now the company forbids them because they are not approved by Ford – I can’t imagine it.

This made me realize pickup trucks have the same form factor as the old farmer’s wagon pulled by a horse. The power plant is up front. The driver sits up higher behind the power, and the cargo lays on on a flat bed behind. Is that the most efficient form factor?

It annoys me to see so many big trucks driving around in the city, looking (and judging by the driver) as if they have never, and never will, haul a big load, go off-road, or do anything else you’d need a truck for. And maybe I’m getting paranoid, but so many of them seem to be driven as if the driver owns the road or thinks so.

Considering prices of gas, oil, and repairs, there are more sensible vehicles out there. But, it appears, this ‘ego’ thing is just another part of the YOLO trend. The Why worry about stuff when it’s all going to end soon anyway?

Haha! Because of how it’s written I thought the dash was a break in the conversation: “Pickups are the best. Selling vehicles these days.” That’s how I read it in my mind and I was completely confused. Then it dawned on me: “Pickups are the best-selling vehicles these days.” Did this happen to anyone else?

And most of the people that own them, would do better to buy a sedan, and rent a truck from the hardware store every three years or so, when they need it. If the bed of your truck looks exactly like it did when you bought it, you probably don’t need a truck.
