Father Gus should tell Rat that he better pray that there is not really an afterlife because if there is, he will likely be visiting the Nine Circles of He!! of Dante’s Inferno!
There was a desk graffiti at my university that said “The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth.” Someone else had added “If it’s all right with the rest of you.”
You break out the beatitudes when your flock starts to question the religion. When they complain that things aren’t getting any better and none of the promises made are coming true, the beatitudes say “Oh, but they will. You just might be dead when they do”.
When I see the passage from Matthew 5:3, I also think of the corresponding passage from Luke: 6:20 “Then he looked up at his disciples and said:’Blessed are you who are poor, (italics mine) for yours is the kingdom of God.21 ’Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.’Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh….”
