I hate it when they build a road right through your home cave, even when the people drive at the speed limit! Every man’s home should be his private cave and not the public highway. Even though society hadn’t invented front doors yet, I would still campaign for larger speed humps in front of your front door .. even make them as big as Evil Knievel sized ramps forcing traffic to jump over your roof!
We have a hilltop several hundred feet from the intersection down the block from where I live. If cars are doing 35 miles per hour (the speed limit), I can see them in time to know if I can make the turn into the intersecting street safely. Most cars are doing 40 and I still have time to see them.
On some occasions, I see no cars, make the turn and then see a car on my bumper honking its horn. I did the math for that car to come up over the hill and be on my @$$ several seconds later. It’s close to 60 mph. Not bad for a residential neighborhood.
Normally, I accelerate to 40 mph, but on these occasions I do about 33 mph. I also mess with their minds sometimes by downshifting. This slows me down without brake lights.
While stationed in England in the 60’s, I experienced a double whammy when I made my first long drive. First roundabout I had ever seen, and no warning how to handle it. Worse yet, my car was left hand drive, which meant I couldn’t view the roadway the same way as the average British driver. Took me 4 rounds to find my way out, then it turned out to be back the way I had come in. So I hit a lay-by, u-turned and want at it again. This time I took the outside lane and made the right turn. I thought, ’it’s a good thing the enemy didn’t make it here. They’d still be on the roundabouts.’ Was fun though, but probably scared years off the lives of the other drivers. I won’t repeat some of the ‘endearing’ terms they applied to me that day. : )
You want speed control? Try a speed dip. A neighborhood near my old high school was one of the few ways to get from one major north-south street to the next one over. The folks didn’t much like all the traffic so they put in a speed dip. It was a trough about the radius of a tire and about a third deep. Hit that thing going 30 MPH or more and you were going to be picking up your suspension from the surrounding lawns. You might have been able to avoid dropping into the trough if you were going around 90 but the street wasn’t long enough for that. The best speed for crossing that speed dip was no more than 10 MPH.
Long ago, my father told me to drive very slowly over bumps so that my car’s suspension wouldn’t get damaged. It was good advice, and I’ve always slowed down, even though some people following me don’t like it.
Darn funny and roundabouts do need warning signs and slow down bumps as most folks have no clue how to use them!! They started introducing them in Washington state about 10 years ago! Most police departments that have them in their jurisdiction have more accidents at the roundabouts location!!

I may just be ignorant, but who puts a speed bump that large before a tunnel that small?

Roundabouts are notorious for sending ALL vehicles flying… I watched as a 44 tonner became a low-flyer… Nothing I could do to warn him…

I notice it’s not a speed bump. Going fast over one of those would land you in the cave.
