This sort of reminds me of when I was 13, my eldest brother got married, he was only 18. To me that was plenty old enough since it was 5 years older than me! But when I was 18 it didn’t seem old enough, I remember asking my mother, “Didn’t you tell him he was too young to get married?” Then hit my head with my palm, “Of course you did!” But to his and his wife’s credit, they are still married after nearly 52 years.
From Lynn’s Comments: When I was Gordon’s age, I needed a bit of financial help but didn’t have the courage to ask for it. Just one small loan, just some confidence-building support and I’d have been able to keep my small advertising business going. In this series, I wanted to do for Gordon what I wished someone had done for me.
I agree with Jon. At least, Gordon, has got the ‘gumption’ to DO something. So many, young people today just want to life off their parents with some ‘pie in the sky’ daydream of what they WANT to do with no real ambition to do anything—case in point—the number of jobs open ! ! ! !
Elly and John did not get engaged at age 19. You have to do a 4-year degree before you can enter dental college and John was already 2 years into the dental college when he met Elly, so at least 24 years old. Elly is two years younger than John, so at at least 22 years old. What they are saying does not match their backstory.
Getting married that young is very risky. People tend to change A LOT between 18 and 23, and even more between 23 and 28. Years ago, many women got married and stayed married because they had no other choice. With no opportunities for real jobs or careers, they had to settle staying with a man just for the financial security. Good thing it’s much different today.
I wonder how rich John the dentist would be if Elly had married someone else. He’d have to charge her on a daily basis for removing her foot from her mouth!
I keep thinking my grands are to YOUNG to do the things they are doing then I think back to what I was doing at their respective ages….Man I was young back then!
I loved this strip back in the uh 80’s maybe, and this rerun is just as enjoyable. Lynn had great ideas and story lines. Way better than most strips today.

Yep, Elly. He wasn’t any crazier than you were. What’s even crazier is you didn’t finish college just to marry John. You should’ve finished college.

Luckily for him, Gordon doesn’t care what Elly thinks.

Usually the crappy pun comes in panel four, not panel two.

You can really see Elizabeth transforming into the beauty she would become.

Glad to see the strip is giving Gordo his due. What a great character Gordo is.

Poor Elly…not wanting her son’s friends to grow up. She’s got some learning to do recognizing the world doesn’t follow her schedule.

I think Gordon will do fine.

That’s exactly the time to take a risk. It’s far easier to start over at 20, if you have to, than at 40 or 50.

Getting engaged was much more dangerous than Gordo buying the gas station/garage…

I got engaged at 20 myself. 48 years later, we’re still married – to each other, I mean.

Cute pun in the second strip, but he really doesn’t own a car? Seems odd that a mechanic wouldn’t.

20? Isn’t Mike a college freshman? That would mean they are 18.

My aunt and uncle were only 21 when they married and 25 when they took me and my older sis in. And they already had a son.

Always liked Gordo, and the idea that not everyone has to be in college to be successful. I hate his dad and I hope he gets eaten by a moose.

Auto mechanic is what Gordon knows best. Why pass on this opportunity to start all over again with a new employer. and need to move on top of it!
