Unless a minivan counts as an SUV, I never had an SUV. Am well past the soccer camp stage. Don’t ever plan on owning one, either. I’ve driven through more than 50 northern winters with either rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive cars and have managed pretty well. Meanwhile, I see a lot of SUVs in the ditch because they think they’re invincible.
My sister-in-law was T-boned by an SUV. She asked for my opinion on the safest car. So I relayed the following story.
In 1906 the Royal Navy build the HMS Dreadnought. It made every other battleship obsolete. Overnight every navy in the world was one modern battleship short of the Royal Navy. This caused an arms race in which every country tried to build bigger and bigger battleships. Culminating with the Japanese building the Musashi and Yamato, both the size of a small skyscraper; each with a weight equal to about 30,000 Ford Broncos.
The same thing is happening with SUVs. There is a thing called the crash test rating. The more displacement tonnage an SUV has, the safer it is. If you are driving the likes of a Canyonayro, your children will be safe while you obliterate whatever it is you hit. Ordinary sedans are mere speedbumps.
So I advised my sister-in-law to get an M1A2 Tank with the reactive armor option.
several years ago i had a boss who had a mustang. one day he showed up for work with an SUV and looking unhappy- the wife was pregnant with #3 and they could no longer transport everyone in the mustang.
This saying is strange, because this sport is very light packed… Shirt, shorts, socks, shoes, shin guard, schampo, towel. And gloves for goal keeper! :D
It would make more sense if it was (American) Football camp, or, Icehockey camp…
Lots of current vehicles are built for every convenience whereas decades past one had to adapt. Owned a ’65 Pontiac Catalina. Long and wide. Big seats. Huge trunk. Lots of room for children and gear. When more haul space needed, I added removable roof rack. Eventually added trailer hitch. Built utility trailer. Sorry when it died.
Modern stuff looks like something slippery and easy to break. So-called aerodynamic shape, simply means to me that almost all of them look alike. No individuality except for size.
…and most are driven by a Platinum Blond Soccer Mom who’s on your rear bumper cuz she’s a VIP and has places to go and things to do and it is very inconvenient for her that you are in her space at that particular time and place….(whew…end of rant. I’m ok now…)
And its musts are independent four-wheel drive, a 500 horsepower Diesel engine, a 35-foot wheelbase, 2’ of snow clearance suspension, kids flat screen internet / TV, to name a few.
where as I am happy to have SUV (though the definition of what an SUV may be different) – purely because being tall and have suffered back trouble, I find getting in and out of them and driving them much easier, especially as I age
No SUV for me. I have a pick up. Got the Line-X in it and you just toss whatever you have in it. Used to have a minivan that smelled like gym socks because everything got left in it and the smell never left. Now I hose it out.
Show me a man who won’t buy a SUV and I’ll show you a man who really loves his high mpg Prius. (and is saving the extra $$ to help his kids get through college)
For the last 30 years or so the SUV has been replacing the station wagon on the USAian and Canadian, and the rest of the world’s roads. That and the minivan, in all its sizes.
When it comes to safety there is no substitute for size especially full size SUVs (which are trucks underneath with beefy frame rails etc) and full size pick up trucks. A compact car that gets in an accident with a compact SUV or P/U will get more damage because they were made with lighter materials to increase gas mileage (EPA). Drive safe, keep your distance and pay attention to what’s up ahead as far as you can see especially on single lane highways, some people have no clue how long a semi truck and trailer is until they fall short of passing one, I’ve had to get on the shoulder to avoid a head on collision more than once.

Station wagons were much better, but then Americans got weird about them. More cargo space.

No thanks. I prefer sedans. Never had an SUV, never will.

From experience…soccer, Lacross, softball, and ice hockey require a MINIVAN, not an SUV.

Boy’s, boy’s, boys. You have it all wrong. The SUV was invented for guy who wouldn’t be caught dead driving a Minivan.

SUV:- Sports Utility Vehicle – mainly used for school runs and parking badly! Rarely (if ever) used off road.

I lived in Marin County where the school buses travel relatively empty and the “only child” is driven to school in an SUV.
