This arc reminds of a misadventure I’d with a friend back in my twenties, where my folks went away somewhere for a day or so, and so I decided to borrow the old minivan and drive us over to an area with some malls and hang out. Buddy wanted to stop and get a smoothie-like drink from a cafe-bakery on the corner….I pulled up, right over a catch basin, that had some broken shards of glass sticking upright wedged between the grate-bars…punctured the front right tire immediately. It was late in the afternoon on a Saturday or Sunday and fortunately I had, somehow, knowledge of some auto shops up the road that I went to on foot (I didn’t want to chance driving on a flat), one after the after, as some were closing, before I found one that was open that would replace the popped tire. Can’t actually remember if a tow was involved or if I did drive on the flat a few blocks to the nearest tire shop. But somehow got that all done inside of an hour, and had the vehicle back in front of their house with (so far as I know from the decade elapsed hence) no one ever wiser (maybe not even me? :P)….I certainly think about that every time I drive over any catch basins!
“Hobbes and I were playing in the garage, an’ I bumped into the car, an’ I heard a thunk and a grinding noise an’ it started rolling out of the garage an’ down the driveway, an’ I couldn’t stop it, an’ PLEASE DON’T KILL ME !! "

I don’t know why Mom would ask that. By now, Calvin constantly shouting and trying desperately to hide something is pretty normal.

That’s the guiltiest you’ve ever looked. What’s up?…..

Calvin could eat anything with his mouth wide open like that in the last panel

Last week, Mom correctly guessed that Calvin was getting into trouble. You’d think her first question would be, “OK—what have you done NOW??”

Car somehow got into the ditch across the road, Calvin and Hobbes are going on a hike.

Calvin’s panic really made me feel like I’m in his shoes.

If Calvin were to have kept his mouth shut, no one would have ever suspected him…

I’m guessing poker is not Calvin’s game…

Not sure if this term is still in the lexicon, but back in the 60’s, we would have advised Calvin to “maintain”.

Haha he’s so screwed.

Forget it, kid. She knows! You might as well fess up and beg for mercy, even though you won’t get any.

Calvin, you couldn’t look guiltier if you tried!

How can someone so conniving act so guilty? Now, Mom’s radar is going off.

I think Calvin is getting ready to ‘flee the scene’ as soon as he packs his clothes and makes the sandwiches.

It’s not in a ditch across the street, THAT’S FOR SURE!"

I love how oddly specific Calvin is being in the third panel, complete with “for example”. You know something’s wrong then!
I like how Calvin looks like a little spazz in the last panel.

That’s how you do it. Just be calm and casual.

Look, I don’t get the point of hiding this. Moms just know stuff without you telling it, saying it, or even knowing it. She’s just like that.
