Being asked to take out the trash in the middle of having fun builds character.

Shoulda lived with my parents, Calvin. You would have spent your days in the vegetable garden or doing house cleaning. “If you have time to play you have time to (heavy cleaning chore).”

It doesn’t seem to bother either parent that their only child’s only playmate is a stuffed toy! Calvin could find better parenting among the dinosaurs!

Drawing, chasing animals, tree house adventures, baseball, comic reading, trekking, treasure hunting, sand box racing… Pant. What more could a six year old would want. Taking trash out once in a while is for building character, fella.

Sunday strips are self-contained, but Ⅰ wouldn’t be surprised if Calvin’s imagination somehow transformed even the mundane chore of taking out the trash into an adventue

I was babysitting my 7 year old granddaughter recently at her house. She made a lunch request, which I was happy to accommodate, however I didn’t know where one of the key ingredients was kept. When I asked her where it was (I knew that she knew), she gave a vague answer in understandably 7-year-old fashion. I asked her to show me where she meant. She came downstairs, grumbling about how she had to come all the way into the kitchen.

I nodded very soberly to her and said, “Yeah, life is really tough, isn’t it?”

Hideously unfair that children should have to contribute to their upbringing in any way whatsoever. My childhood attitude; never spoken aloud.

When you look for misery, you’ll find misery. I had a mother like this. She wasn’t happy unless she had something to complain about.

The artwork of this comic is so refreshingly animated and a joy to read. Baffled why it was never made into some movie or into Saturday morning cartoons.

And yet Calvin is perfectly happy. Imagination is a wonderful thing. As a kid, my friends all lived some distance away and summers were mostly without them. I didn’t mind a bit! Calvin is one of the truly imaginative kids out there!

Yup, how human of you, Calvin. Open your eyes. 11 panels of all the fun you can have, measured against 2 panels of a simple chore. Which one wins? 2 or 11? Don’t let the 2 win!

If I live to be 108, I will never understand why people take comic strips so seriously, and try to infuse their own interpretation into what the “message” is supposed to be… even if that “message” is simply a boy, living life to the fullest, with his “tiger.”

I can recall one of my sisters announcing that she would no longer do the dishes, as she had been doing them all her life. She was, maybe 10-12 years old at the time, and stated this in the presence of our grandmother, who had been washing dishes by hand for over sixty years.
