Poor Gutter. there’s nothing sadder than a raccoon with a broken heart, except for a racoon with a broken heart listening to Dire Straits! I much prefer the song Romeo and Lonely Girl, by Thin Lizzy. Or better still the cover by Ernie Graham.
Oh, Gutter, do not use Romeo and Juliet as your role model. I’ve read the play at least 40 times. I’ve listened to the audio of the play at least 40 times. I’ve seen two live performances. I’ve watched the movie at least 50 times and probably more. Every time I read or listen or watch, I want it to end differently. Wesley will be gone soon. You will be there to help pick up the pieces of Sophie’s heart.
We’re halfway through a one week “reboot” recommended by our veterinarian to mend the deteriorating relationship between Sandy and our new cat. The idea is to go back to the beginning, confine him when she’s out and about, and only let him out when she’s asleep in the bedroom and we can shut the door.
It already feels like it’s been a month and the carpet in the doorway of the spare room is being ripped to shreds as he tries to dig his way out under the door. Good thing it’s an old carpet, but we weren’t planning to replace it quite so soon.
Zing, Bert! My personal favorite song for occasions like these is Love Bites by Def Leppard. It happened to be on the radio a lot during my last breakup. I am still skeptical that it is time to proclaim “lasting love” between Sophie and Wesley.
If Gutter suddenly showed up at the BPH with some prime garbage (let’s say: irresistible art materials for Sophie, and cheese for Wesley) would they both fall in love with him? Sophie would, perhaps, not be quite so fickle, but I’ll bet Wesley would.
I do like that it seems Mag is going to comfort him.. probably with some brutal honesty but still I expected her to be more annoyed at this situation. Instead her expression is more “Crud how do I tackle this”. Also how did she not notice his depression loop? Does Gutter just normally loudly play the dire straights on a loop? … probably.
Also nice deep cut. I hadn’t heard of the song, but I always love when creators go for a weirdly specific refrence. It’s why the “julia sugarbaker telloffs” bit with Lupin or THe Man reciting Scott Hall’s bad guy speech work so well: you don’t NEED the context, but if you get the refrence (which admitely I didn’t here) it hits even better. Also the song has nothing to do with the actual play romeo and juliet, just a man seeing an unintrested woman as his juliet.
Finally.. sentences like "Local racoon gutter has been listening to dire straits’ “Romeo and Juliet” for 2 hours straight." are what make this strip so great. Just the fact we built up to that, it makes entire sense.. but it’s still just so great.

Just the fact we built up to that, it makes entire sense.. but it’s still just so great.P.S. really curious where Elvis and Goldie are. I get Goldie retired from the news, but you think she’d at least have some thoughts on this, or being the perceptive one notice how one sided Sophie’s new relationship is. Elvis.. is playing “i’m not the one” by the cars on a loop while writing his report and telling everyone to leave him alone while Iggy softly pats his shoulder.
“You n me babe, how ’bout it?…” Hang in there Gutter, ferrets have an attention span the size of an electron! Won’t be long til Wesley is into the Wensleydale and Sophie will be back on track to woo. “When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?”
“Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink, which is not strictly relevant since the record had not yet gotten to that bit, but there will be too much else going on when it does, and furthermore the chronicler does not intend to sit by with a track list and a stopwatch, so it seems best to mention it now, while things are still moving slowly.” Douglas Adams, “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish”
I’ve never heard the song. Working graveyard shift pretty much isolated me from pop culture in the ’80s. Or was that from the ’80s? I have a resonator guitar that looks like the one on the cover of their first album.
After my first marriage ended, I had two albums on repeat on my bedroom turntable….Supertramp (1970) and Steely Dan’s The Royal Scam. Been there, raccoon friend….been there.

I love Dire Straits’ guitar riffs. Nothing sad there.

Romeo and Juliet isn’t a love story. It’s a three-day relationship between a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old that resulted in six deaths. ;-) >^^<

This storyline is hitting a little too close to home for me. I am firmly with Team Gutter.

A Golden Oldie: Jack Jones Lady
Sophie, you’re in love today but what about when he leaves tomorrow?
Why waste all your loveliness on someone now in foster care?
There is a raccoon who really loves you tenderly, you will see,
All the joys of love he is longing to give you there will be!
…….
Sophie, take his love today and let him show you happiness forever
Wesley may be nice but he really has no clue!
Why find out too late that what you thought was love was just a brief fantasy?
Gutter really loves you, so lovely Sophie won’t you fall in love with “He”?

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
Iggy: It looks like this interactive tapestry is plenty sturdy. But can it stand up to Lupinium and Ora Z?
Arachna: I used my best spider silk. And the gemstones are all courtesy of Fe-Anaro.
Maat-Tilda: The backing is all space-time fabric, so it should last all eternity.
Adobe Style: Alright. Just one more test, and then we can take it to the oPyramid for the Literary Festival.
Enter Beatrixia, Lupinium, and Ora Zedd
Bea: Hello! I heard you have a new interactive tapestry.
Sophititi: Yes. We wanted to create something special for the upcoming Literary Festival. We want to make sure it will hold up to the interactivity.
Ora Z: Do you want me to shred it? Or blow it up?
Soph: No. Just climb on it and do your best.
Lupinium: I just love to climb. I could stay here all day!
Iggy: This spider silk ladder reminds me of my favorite book: Treasured Island!
Ora Z: My favorite is Pippi Long Socks!
Bea: Mine is, what else? Paddle to the Nile!
Lupinium: And when I get tired, I like to read myself to sleep and bid The Moon, Good Night.
Adobe: I think I know just how to make this tapestry interactive!

A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, “You and me babe, how about it?”
