That’s the one thing I’ll never miss: waiting for the bus…and the one hour commute to school…especially in the winter. My bus stop was around 300 feet from the house and I had to be there before 7:30 am every morning to be picked up. I’m so glad that’s over.

Either she forgot it’s Labor Day or she forced Calvin to wake up before the crack of dawn.

I assume Hobbes isn’t really there in ‘person’ ….how else can he ambush Calvin when he comes home from school?

New school bus company and 2 1/2 hours was close to how late they were the first year. New buses have GPS which makes sense.

Our schools start tomorrow for grades 6 and 9, Wed. for everyone else. Watch out for School Zones, most of them do not have flashing lights or monitors.

Problem is, when Cal realizes no school today, assuming it’s Labor Day holiday, he’ll be motivated to repay Mom for the trick. Given his twisted mind, who knows what horrors he bring.

What happens to Hobbes when Calvin gets on the school bus? He doesn’t take Hobbes to school – Hobbes is waiting for him in the house when he gets home. Does Calvin just leave Hobbes on the sidewalk when he gets on the bus, and his mother walks out every schoolday to pick him up and take him back inside?

I’d be grumpy, too, if my mother woke me up 2 hours early at that age to go out and wait for the school bus.

On another note, riding the school bus in high school in our area was the worst experience. By the time the bus got to our stop, it was already full, yet we were forced to sit in the bus seats already occupied by two other kids. This was made especially difficult in the winter time with winter coats and books to carry….backpacks weren’t a thing in our school yet back then. Fortunately, I had a couple of friends who were older than me and as soon as they got their driver’s licenses, the bus ride torture each morning ended.

I used to look at the kids as they waited for the school bus when I commuted to work. I recall two girls (apparently in middle school) at one stop. They were always chatting or dancing and on one day, cartwheeling while they waited for the bus. This was so long ago, that they could be well be established in a career by now.

In the current day, I walk in the morning and I see the kids waiting for the bus with their heads buried in their phones. Some of them don’t even acknowledge me when I wish them a “Good Morning.” Some do manage to grumble back.

As someone without children there’s something I just don’t understand. I’ve heard friends and family exclaim how much they want to have children and yet once the child is born all I hear them say is how much they need to “get away from this kid/these kids”. Why have kids then? Help me understand the logic…if there is any.

Hopefully Hobbes’s watch is wrong or something… the Mom could get in trouble for putting Calvin out to wait for the school bus 2 1/2 hours early. That’s practically child abuse!

And hey, school starts in my area this week, too!

Putting Calvin out by the bus early has it’s pitfalls. Calvin’s been known to wander off and play hooky. This might not end well, in his mother’s case.

An old cartooning convention: Hobbes looks at his wrist and there’s a watch. Otherwise, no.

Believe me, if I was Calvin’s mom, I’d do the same thing! BTW, I wondered how Hobbs makes it home after Calvin the bus? Maybe mom comes and picks him up?

I’m reposting my comments cause I got some crazy replies. This is another reason Calvin won’t miss his parents when they die. I bet he has a long list of reasons he won’t miss ether of them. Number 1 for his dad would be every time he says “It builds character.” Number 1 for his mom are the gross dinners and making him eat at a table instead of in front of the TV.
