Hmm, blue eyes now. This must be That Other Man offering morsels. (That Man, of course, is the one who now permanently fosters Dr. Scuttles and a certain infamous owl.
“What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the sun. Arise fair sun and kill this envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief that thou, her maid at far more fair than she.” That second panel is a reference to Romeo and Juliet.
Definitely Gutter to the rescue but what about the human? How are they going to pull this off with them in there right next to Sophie? Or Pricilla as these humans call her?
What fresh heck through yonder window breaks? It is a beast, my Gutter-boy has come. At last, he’s come, to free me from this too-white room. That’s already boring far beyond belief, Some mess well make — Art more fair and free. I’ll be his lady, and he’ll be my love.
When I was a kid, my favorite person was my elementary school librarian. She loved Dorothy Parker, and would sometimes read passages aloud to me. To this day I wonder “what fresh hell is this” whenever a stranger with a clipboard comes knocking at the front door.
League City, TX here. Been up all night with Beryl to watch over our house. Raining very hard now and for the last hour and a half, wind gusty and water draining well outside so far. Land fall was a while ago about an hours drive down the coast. Rain bands will be on and of for a few more hours. Carmela is sound asleep, told her to go for it and I would get her if needed. So far so good.
I know we’ve seen many emotions with Sophie, but this may be the first time we’ve seen anger (panel 4). Never a good thing when a creative, introverted, gentle soul angers!
We had two big round Racoons in Marie’s Fairy Garden this morning. I was taking out the recycling…Hmmm, I wonder if they knew it was recycling day? Anyway, I was taking out the recycling, and I surprised Bud & Lou (I named them). They left three pine cones in the garden, which means they probably took something. I’ll have Marie check it when she wakes up.
As soon as the three of us saw each other, they scampered off to the big Oak tree in the front yard. They duct down behind the tree, but then one masked face popped from around the tree as if to say, “Go away.” Next time, I will try to get a picture.
Who is asking about the tasty morsel? In the July 6 strip, the woman’s eyes are still that creepy reddish-brown, so this doesn’t look like the woman’s eyes. And that would be a creepy thing for Gutter to say, I think…
A few days ago it was mentioned that it’s been quite a while since GSD Mom has posted. Anyone know more about that? Sending out big strong hugs and good vibes.
Raccoon news: we have more visiting mommas and babies than I can keep track of! And the babies are at the cute play-fighting age!
Our local girl, Amelia, has two I am calling Teenie and Tiny. Amelia was one of last year’s crop of babies and had her litter about a month later than the older moms. She’s rearing them alongside her mother Wallis and Wallis’s two, who are chubby little trouble machines.
In this heat animals suffer, so consider putting water out for your yard people! We fill the kiddie pool every night and have seen it visited by opposums, cats, mice, weasels, and of course lots of raccoons! Watching baby raccoons play King of the Kiddie Pool on the back door cam is the most fun you’ll have all summer.
Last night Amelia was teaching her little ones to follow close when she leaves the yard. I have stones under the gate to prevent them from making it easier to get in and out – they have to squeeze under – but when they were allowed to deepen the passage, one morning I woke up to a dog in the back yard, which isn’t safe for anyone. So this way they can get in but dogs can’t. Amelia was going under the gate, trilling for the babies to follow, then coming back in and trilling until they followed her back in. Baby raccoons have short attention spans and this took some patience, but they did learn!
Has anybody been in touch with @emiesty? It’s been a month since the last post. Somebody using the screen name @emiesty2 posted for a few days, but the two profiles did not match, so I wasn’t sure if it was an imposter.
What is that white shape in the upper corner of the window. It looks like a light or lantern. The power to the whole town is out. Could it be Angus with his lantern helping Gutter see what he’s doing?
The speculative question is a mashup of two famous lines. In “Romeo and Juliet,” Romeo says, “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?” (Act 2, Scene 2.) “What fresh (heck) is this?” is often attributed to American writer and famous wisecracker Dorothy Parker, although other people wrote (and presumably said) versions of it before her time. Parker supposedly said it whenever someone rang her doorbell.

A quote (well, a paraphrase) from Romeo and Juliet? Is romance in the future? Hopefully not doomed romance! (Sorry, Robin.)

Hiding low, looking right to leftIf you see us coming I think it’s best
We’ll move away, do you hear what I say? From under my breath

Al Stewart: Year of the Cat
In the evening of the day of Independence
After the fireworks have all been shown
And the Robber Mice have ensured the lights aren’t shining
You go to work with your hook.
She is there in a crate with a star to guide her
And a screen between the two of you
This is your moment now, you are living for this
You know what you must do
Let’s go rescue a cat!
…….
You know there is no time for questions
And right now it isn’t really clear
And you, concealed by the dark, look in her direction
You’d like to tell her, don’t despair
In the dark of the room, you’re looking through the gloom
There’s a human there as well
You survey the room as you make your plan
You know what you must do
To rescue the cat!
…….
Well evening comes and you’re there with her
Like fresh heck you work to break through
It’s dark and in it’s not clear the best course of action
But there’s something you must do
But the fireworks are over and the silence remains
And you must proceed with stealth
You know sometime you’re gonna succeed
But right now you must take care
To rescue the cat!

Beatrixia: Thanks for all your help, Bev. We’ll be in touch.
Beaver Lee Cleary: You are most welcome. And remember, the Papyrus Eagles are always at the ready.
Sophititi: I’m much more confident all will be well with my descendant Sophie.
Sidewalk: She is in my descendant Gutter’s capable paws.
Soph: Yes. And don’t forget to come for the Afar and Away Lawn Potato Ball series.
Sidewalk: Ah, yes. At Punn State’s Woodchuck Stadium.
Sometime Later
Bea: Here we are at the Ceiling Can Be a Floor Culinary School. I think we’re just in time for supper.
Iggy: Great! I always enjoy Patrice Possum’s barbie.
Enter Floofnet the Joyous
Floofnet: Welcome, Egyptian friends! You’re just in time to join us for a Tasty Tilapia Barbecue.
Bea: We are delighted to accept.
Iggy: Who caught the tilapia?
Floofnet: Fresh and Salty’s cousins Swift and Flo Water Cat.
Iggy: I’m glad to see they have a girl fisher cat now.
Floof: And I’ve heard that Thomios has cooked up a pot of Chowder for a Clowder.
Iggy: Ooh…I hope he saves some for us.
