My brother and grandma had a sort of similar thing going for a couple of weeks 60ish years ago. He needed to send her a letter, but had no stamp so he taped a nickle the envelope. It arrived with the nickle canceled! She took the nickle off the envelope and used it to send a response. Alas, it arrived at his dorm with the nickle replaced by an uncancelled stamp. Which he soaked off and used to send her a letter. THAT one got cancelled.

I strongly suspect the story is better than whatever they chose to tell each other inside the envelopes.

    like those silly, overly-polite gophers:

    “thank you”

    “no, thank YOU”

“no, no, Ⅰ insist – THANK you”

“wouldn’t hear of it – THANK YOU”

    ⠄⠄⠄

1n 1979, my wife and I moved from PA to Illinois shortly after marrying. I kept in touch with one friend by playing chess by mail using postcards. We’d generally write back within a week, and include just a little news for each other. The game took 2.5 years. The worst part was when you mail the card with your move on it, and then realize you made a mistake. Your opponent hasn’t even received it yet, but you’ll live with the consequences for a long, long time. Good lesson for life! But doing this was a lot of fun.

I hope Opal stocked up on USPS “Forever” stamps before the price increased 5 cents to $.73 on July 14.

I did not like having to write thank-you notes after Christmas, especially for the “lovely scarf” Aunt Barb sent me…that was totally disgusting…but it’s the thought that counts. Right…tell someone who believes you.

When I was deployed on the ships I was on, those were the times I would write. It tooks weeks to receive mail. Once in a while, when our ship was in port somewhere, I’d call my wife at a phone booth, and give her that phone # so she could call me back. Somehow it was cheaper that way. It was pretty much a one way conversation where I was doing the listening but it was nice to hear her voice.

I never got this. When I got married we said thank you to everyone that gave us stuff and came to the wedding (a small one, maybe 70 people).

A few days later she starts writing thank you cards to send to all the people that gave us gifts and we had already thanked. Gotta be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done. Wast of time and money.

My daughter now sends me a picture in a text of her children using whatever I gave them. It always makes me smile. She used to write, then text, now picture. Honestly, I like the pictures. They don’t live more than 10 miles from me, so it’s not like I haven’t seen them for a year.

I don’t go through stamps very much because I pay all my bills online but I do still enjoy sending cards to people to let them know I am thinking about them, get well cards, sympathy cards and such. I just sent out 2 sympathy cards last Monday to two close friends who lost their husbands a day apart, one from cancer and one from effects of dementia and poor health due to old age.
